Why asshats? Dude gets to keep the money. Took 'em a while but it all seems fairly straight forward to me. Sure the cops dragged their feet quiet a bit, but asshats?

They should pay him the difference between what that money was worth in 1996 and what it's worth now. Inflation sucks.

Hey, that's my $10,000 that I lost on that college campus! Darnit!

The cops broke the law. I'd sue them for damages, lost interest and emotional distress. He should be able to get $100,000 from it.

In ten years of advertising a lost $10,000... they received -one- call? Only Mormons are that lacking in greed.

It's policy to destroy this money normally in Utah?

Then, 1. Isn't destruction of legal tender illegal? and 2. Why didn't they destroy this money, regardless of whether it was deemed "suspicious"?

I'm cornfused.

This is an excellent example of why you should not try to involve the police in any affair unless its absolutely necessary.

Officers took one call about the money, but their story did NOT match.

I wasn't aware the AP advocated YELLING at their READERS.

2006-12-07 02:38:28 PM
If that money had been invested in AAPL, it would now bw $150,000.
Yikes.

They didn't print it in the paper until a month ago according TFA if I read it right. It says they gave it one last try to find the owner and then talked about printing it in the paper. They got one call and said hell with it. The gap between the first 3 months and the following 9.75 years is where I draw a blank.

1. They dispose of property. Not destroy it. In currency's case, disposing of it would mean giving it to the guy who turned it in. It was supposed to happen in 3 months, but they sat on it because it was suspicious.

Find $10k in a purse on the street - turn it in
Find $10k in anything with a name - turn it in
Find $10k ANYWHERE ELSE or with no name.....that's mine

He's actually lucky they didn't just declare it "drug money" and just permanently confiscate it into their budget.

Perhaps these cops weren't bitten by the "seize it all and let God sort it out" bug.

Now we see how much the IRS takes. Will he have to file an amended return for 1996, or will he declare it this year? Or, since his name was withheld, will he just keep it and buy old Donnie and Marie albums?

"Find $10k ANYWHERE ELSE or with no name.....that's min"

Getting caught trying to spend $10k in counterfeit or stolen bills isn't going to look very good.

Good for him (even though he had to wait 10 years). Sounds like someone is going to have a really big turkey at Christmas dinner this year.

That worked out to about $178 per ounce, I'm inclined to say yes.

$312.50 Even, math fails me at times.

Also, this was ten grand stashed in a pipe. Around here, few people have $10k in cash, just lying around. Actually, that's probably not even true. Anyway, my point is: this looks like a drug or ransom money drop. So someone out there is out $10k and that somebody probably will try to track you down.

Around here, if you turn found money in to the police, you don't get it back if nobody claims it. It just goes into the general coffer.

About $1200 for a qp.

Let's see... $10,000.00 left in a savings account accruing 3.00 APR for 10 years (i.e, 120 months) comes up to an Accumulated Balance totaling $13,439.16. Not too shabby!

2006-12-07 11:15:41 PM
The question is... What was a teacher doing messing with some pipes and how did he just happen to crack one open and find $10,000?? That seems a bit fishy to me...

2006-12-07 11:19:05 PM
Haha nevermind guys im retarded. I some how assumed it was just a teacher, I skimmed...
