I have a '93 900S with 230K miles on it. Original engine and tranny, no rebuilds.

Just to be clear, a collision with a Moose is basically game over for all involved.

What happens is that the front end of the Car sweeps the legs out from under it, sending rest of the Moose's 1000 lbs through your windshield. That's one helluva way to go. Just ask a Newfie.

I'm surprised SAAB didn't at least pony up for something. IIRC, Mercedes gave an elderly couple a new car when their original MB crossed the 1 mil mile mark.

JohnnyDanger: SAABs in the US are typically owned by aging public school teachers with overwhelming superiority complexes.

They're mediocre people all around, and use their income (derived from years at the public trough) to buy something that makes them feel sophisticated and superior in a world that knows them to be anything but.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Mr. Danger please allow me to retort.

Your mom is a hooker. She owns a SAAB. I farked her. Totally mediocre in bed.

I have a 2000 chevy impala with over 193,000 miles on it and never needed any rebuilds. And if you're wondering what the secret is, it's called regular maintenance.

I had a ('93? '95? The first year they changed the back end to be more hatchback-y)SAAB 900 break down on me during rush hour on the side of 95/128 in MA. When I called AAA, the guy laughed at me. It was my first car and I inherited it when it was 9 years old. And I didn't have a job, so I couldn't pay for repairs. I ended up getting it towed to the local SAAB dealership and never seeing it again.

But damn, that thing was way fun to drive. I remember doing 120 on the highway in that thing. Racing my friends in their Volvos was fun, too.

Sadly, Saabs are now nothing more than prettied up Chevy POS.

I know someone who recently bought one and was later horrified when they found out it is really a Chevy Malibu.

Actually, I think one model is based on a Subaru WRX, so that one might be halfway decent. Although I'm sure GM can figure out a way to fark it up. All the buttons and switches will still fall off.

'95 Mercury Mystique- 152k Everything original except part of the power steering system. No rebuilds. Engine is great and transmission and clutch both mint. So what's the big deal when there's all those cars with 3-6 times the mileage? This is a freakin' Ford! I never would have expected this much from it, but every month I drive it is a month I don't need to buy a car to replace it.

Lafcadio: my 2000 volvo S40 just hit 100k, and drives exactly like new. AND it has turbo. AND it's pre-ford.

2000 V70 has 130K. And there's no need for the Ford hate. Ford has does a great job of keeping their hands out of their other brands.

Blubble: I know someone who recently bought one and was later horrified when they found out it is really a Chevy Malibu.

Sort of. But more of a case of both of them being an Opel.

at 1,000,000 miles an 89 SAAB would need at least 4 or 5 transmissions, and maybe as many head gaskets.
but that's cool.

(work on them every day, for 20+ years now)

Evidently I've gotten shadowf200's panties in a bunch.

shadowf200 responded in a manner that's emblematic of a mediocre person with a raging superiority complex. Tragic.

Thank you for your attention, however.

Looks like arse with those tyres though. Get some decent wheels, and low-profile tyres, and then take some pics.

PS. What the hell does 3800 power mean?

It was manufactured in Sweden but the '99s are right on the edge where GM started taking over

I'd say that the 1999 Saabs are pretty much GM vehicles (The 1994 900s were the first designed under GM, and the 1999 9-3 went under significant revisions.) If you want to avoid GM, you'd buy before 1993.

I really don't think of this as a bad thing per se (a lot of traditional Saab people don't like the new 9-3, but it was designed to go head to head with the BMW 3 series (a slightly ambitious project perhaps.) While I have huge issues with GM killing the Saab brand in dumb ways (9-2, 9-7) I think GM hasn't been all that bad for Saab (but certainly not as good as Ford has been to Volvo or Jaguar.)

log_jammin: Besides, Al Bundy did this YEARS ago with his Dodge
MonkeyBoy666: Al Bundy was a character on a TV show
ActualFarkal: Don't discount Al Bundy. His Dodge hit a million miles. It's a terrible shame it ran out of his driveway at the million mark and he couldn't claim his Viper.

I completly agree -- I have a set of chrome rims on their way as we speak.

PS. The Bonneville has a 3.8 liter engine -- from 92 up they're referred to as 3800 Series One or 3800 Series Two (pre- or post- 95).

Rust eventually killed this one after a mere quarter-million miles. I'm still going through withdrawl two years later.

Warning: modifying the turbo control unit (APC box) will result in a substantial increase in torque, and a substantial decrease in transmission longevity. Modifying the suspension will eventually cause face pain from the shiat-eating grin.

Actually, Saabs are, in fact, designed to withstand a moose impact. They actually test each new design with a giant life- like moose dummy.

Sure, nothing is 100% fool proof. But if I have to hit a moose, I'd rather hit one in a car that was actually designed with a bit of thought put into moose collisions.

----------------------------
by the time the 9-3 came around, GM totally owned Saab. the 9-3 at the time was basically a slightly rejiggered 900. my ex- gf had a 1994 Saab 900SE Turbo- nice car, but there were a good number of GM parts mixed in with the typical European parts.

Here's the difference with Ford: when they buy a company that's doing things right (Mazda and Volvo) they let them continue to do things just as they have been, and they learn from them. Point: New Volvos don't have any Ford parts in them. but there's Fords with Volvo parts- look at the European version of the Ford Focus- it's built on the same platform as the Volvo S40. Also, all of Ford's new designs are winning awards for safety- the new F-150, the Focus, the Freestar, the Five Hundred, the Fusion- all of those cars are posting Volvo- like numbers in crash tests. Someone's taking notes.

GM tries to turn their purchases into just another division. They're taking their time with Saab- but it's still likely to happen. And yes, that would suck.
Note: GM really didn't have anything to do with the 9-2. It's just a Subaru. A Saabaru, if you will. :)

Well no, it's not a GM car, but it was an idea that they thought was brillaint in Detroit that does nothing for the brand. The whole value of Saab is the brand and GM struggles to understand it.

One good thing GM gave Saab--the new V-6 found in the 9-3 Aero. It was modified by Saab, but it's a great engine platform.
