"Our government will not spend taxpayers' money on providing tattoos for convicted criminals"

Good! You're IN JAIL. You get a cell and like it. No tattoos, TV's, Internet...

I'm really trying, but there are some liberal thought processes that are beyond me. Paying for tats is one of them.

Much better we have to provide all the millions of dollars in healthcare, drugs etc. later rather then pay a dollar now and provide them a clean needle . Also it keeps the public safe when they are finally released . But you can't see that over your cup of kool-aid

Keep chugging that Kool-aid you dumb ass

Dude, getting a tat is a choice. There may be three people left in North America that don't know that you can get AIDS from unsterilized needles.

Should we give them condoms to slip on before the shower rape too?

How about NOT letting them get tattoos AT ALL?

Seems to be the point everyone else was making.

Wouldn't inmates be safer if they were completely separated from one another?

What are you going to do , put them in a windowless box .??

Great , then we have to take care of ex-cons that have gone bat-shiat crazy from be sensory deprivation .

But hey Torture is right up Conservatives ally , one of the cornerstones so it seems.

"What are you going to do , put them in a windowless box .??"

If that's what it takes. This isn't the Plaza Hotel. It's freaking JAIL. If you don't want to spend the next 6 months in solitary then don't do what gets you put there.

A buddy of mine got caught with a jar of oil after doing 6 years for rape. He was sentenced to 3 months. I said, that's going to suck; and he says, "Nah, it's 3 months of playing cards and doing dope."

So yeah, shove them in the hole for a few months and we'll see how many tattoos they get.

/no sympathy for criminals

Tats are used to mark prisoners as members of certain gangs, to show the number of men they killed or women they raped...what in the fark is the government doing paying for it?! I don't car e about the health care costs associated with sharing tat needles, but still...WTF!

Not judging or anything, but why are you friends with a convicted rapist?

So you go to prison, tarnishing your record - pretty much throwing out any possibility of obtaining a good job.. Then you mark up your body, pretty much advertising that you're a farking loser - so even if someone can't see your criminal record, they can just look at you and tell.

Tattoos are for white trash..

2006-12-04 06:46:34 PM
Prison shouldn't be this totally horrible place, as the vast majority of prisoners do get released. You really don't want people coming out far worse people than they went in.

They have criminals in Canada?

2006-12-04 06:47:39 PM
Seems like an open and shut case for harm reduction. I would rather buy an inmate a needle than a lifetime supply of AIDS drugs. Any other way of looking at this is hopelessly idealistic and moralistic. Do you want to move to Canada and buy rapists AZT with your tax dollars? Then STFU.

Befuddled

Prison shouldn't be this totally horrible place, as the vast majority of prisoners do get released.

But then it comes down to a discussion of the goals of prison. Is it for rehabilitation or for punishment? Are we preparing these people for reintegration, or are we punishing them out of the hope that they won't go back?

Behold, the liberal Befuddled has spoken. Lets make prison all cushy so when they get out its just like they never left...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_William_King
==============================================
John William King is a white supremacist who was convicted of murdering James Byrd, Jr., in a 1998 hate crime. He was accused of beating Byrd with a bat and then dragging him behind a truck until the African-American man died. The testimony phase of his trial started in Jasper, Texas on February 16, 1999. He was found guilty of kidnapping and murder on February 23 and was sentenced to death on February 25.

King had previously been gang-raped in prison by black prisoners and, although he had no previous record of racism, had allegedly joined a white-supremacist prison gang for self-protection. While in this group he was involved with many drug deals and prison gang murders/hazings. It may be that the killing of James Byrd Jr was seen as "revenge" by King.

Canadian Prison Tattoos:

One round bacon tat for each murder;

Mountie-style hat tat if you tussled with the cops;

Moose tat for battery;

beaver tat for rape . . .

They used to ban prison tattoo's; however, prisoners are pretty good at getting something whether it is banned or not. Sharp object + ink from a pen = prison tattoo. Rising costs of health care from the rampant AIDs and Hepatitis being passed around meant it was cheaper for the prisons to provide clean needles and let them have at it.

The goal of prison SHOULD be rehabilitation in all but the most extreme cases.

2006-12-04 06:59:54 PM
Good. Im all for safe injection sights, needle drops, condoms in Jr high school, etc but paying for some dumb farks tattoo's is a no no. Those idiots saying its cheaper to buy one tattoo needle then a lifetime supply of drugs are myopically stupid. It is far cheaper to pay for a lifetime supply of drugs for 3 assholes who contract AIDS from a shared needle then it is to pay for 100,000 surgical grade tattoo needles (after all its for everyone not just 2 or 3 people. You also use multiple needles for tattoo's at times).

I hate to encourage Canadian stereotypes, but "Canadian prison tats" sounds like a great Photoshop contest.

On an unrelated flame-baiting note, I would cry like the NOT YOURS girl if I got within spitting distance of prison, no matter how "cushy" it was. I take it the internet penises of the Fark vigilante squad are much longer, though?

Because rape isn't funny.

Also, people tend to forget the human factor:

"Paul Harrigan is a union representative for corrections officers and a former Renous prison guard. He says the tattoo parlours didn't work out because inmates stole ink and needles for illegal tattoos."

See, the shiat these guys do to get thrown in jail is pretty well known to be illegal. You do something illegal, you are going to be thrown in jail. Jail should suck. Should be more solitary, with plenty of books to read and daily opportunities to exercise (and socialize during exercise).

2006-12-04 07:11:28 PM
Regrettably, many of you do not understand the costs of incarceration. The majority of inmates are NOT put into cells. This is WAY too expensive. Most of them are housed in large dormitories with 100's of bunk beds. This method costs the taxpayers about 22k a yea per prisoner. If you want to put everyone in their own little cell, it will cost you about 80k a year per inmate.

So, I imagine all of you conservatives who call for this are willing top pay 4x your current taxes right? Right?

Try not to talk when you know nothing, it only makes you seem stupid.

Most priosns make tatooing illegal, but it is nearly impossible to control. Those who are caught are placed in segregation for a period of punishment and then have to pay for their HIV/HEP tests. Many prison officials use advertising campaigns about MRSA, HIV, AIDS and it's association with tatooing, but regrettably, it falls on deaf ears because the inmate population is not the most brilliant and forward thinking in the world.

Finally, as for those of you who do not want TV, recreation, etc... Once again, more ignorance. If the inmates have nothing to do that is constructive, the will simply become destructive. How would you like to work a dormitory with 280 convicted violent felons who have nothing to do by yourself? I doubt most of you have the courage. Noentheless, you will stand on your little soapbox and decry inmates being able to watch Jerry Springer while in prison.

2006-12-04 07:12:28 PM
An incredibly retarded decision, but that should come as no shock, given that it's being made by Conservatives.

So many invalid arguments against it:

"Don't let prisoners get tattoos at all". And while we're doing that, let's stop them from smuggling in drugs, and murdering and raping each other.

"Who doesn't know getting an unsterilized tattoo can result in bloodborne pathogens?" Probably about the same amount of people who don't know killing another human being or robbing a liquor store at gun point results in a prison sentence, yet those prisons have a much larger population than the small number, don't they? Convicts are not world-renowned for their well-formulated decision making capabilities.

&c.

You people are shortsighted morons. There is absolutely nothing to stop these people, once released, from spreading the infection to other, innocent people.

Which is what this is supposed to help prevent.

But it won't, because of manipulated think tank robot assholes like you and the tender ministrations of the Reform Conservative Party Cabinet Goon Squad -- a veritable collection of Tonton Macoutes Rhetoric and Reason pass on to their children as bogeymen stories when they misbehave -- "Be cogent, or the Harper Government will get you!"

2006-12-04 07:21:54 PM
So, I imagine all of you conservatives who call for this are willing top pay 4x your current taxes right? Right?

If I have to explain to one more idiot that the actions of a government are not necessarily representative of the wishes of the people who voted for them, I'll shiat my pants and smear it all over a child's face.

2006-12-04 07:23:53 PM
He argues it violates inmates' human rights to deny them access to sterile equipment.

A tattoo is not a 'human right'. There is an easy solution to not getting AIDS from an unsterile needle. Don't have your buddy give you a tattoo.
