A) Offering gambling services to other countries residents without that government's permission is legal
B) Really doesn't matter, A will pay for everything else

I really wish that Spain would just shut the hell up about Gibraltar.

If the UK had an area on the South Coast, say round about Brighton or a chunk of Cornwall, that was annexed by Spain, full of Spanish speakers and refused to abide by British law, I don't think the British government would shut up about it somehow.

Glasgowsfinest - true, but if we'd signed it over to them hundreds of years ago and we suddenly started demanding they give it back, there's every chance they'd just laugh at us.

absolutely - but we wouldn't stop moaning about it, I guarantee you.

What about the Channel Islands, shouldn't some of those be French by nature of geographic proximity?

(Spain is just mad at the Brits because they pronounce all the names wrong. Tener-EEF. EYE-beetha. Ma-JOR-ca. But I digress. And I keed.)

Glasgowsfinest

1. Gibraltar has now been British for longer than it was ever Spanish.

2. The vast majority of the people of Gibraltar want it to continue to be British.

3. Whenever I hear about Spanish people complaining about how unfair this situation is, it's always incredibly tempting to laugh in their faces and mention the names Ceuta or Melilla

My point still stands:

If this was a Spanish enclave in the UK the government would whine about it non stop, as would Middle England and the whole "sun never sets on the British Empire" crowd.

I wouldn't care personally.

My point was not whether the Spanish are right to complain, just that I can understand why they do.

When I was in Gibraltar, it was distinctly British - didn't seem to stop the long line the Spanish folks from entering Gibraltar.

Seems like more politicians whining so they look like they're doing something.

Maybe the Spanish will "do a Falklands" and give the Brits a chance to kick their asses again, just like they did to Argentina.

I was always a big fan of Spain. Generally I liked to mass Conquistadors and support them with pikemen. Missionaries are something of a waste of time, and those longbowman are tough to beat though.

I've actually been to Melilla (for about an hour). Landing at the airport is quite interesting.

More power to 'em.

Went to Gibraltar on a liberty port visit in 1999. Nicest people around and more pubs than you can shake a stick at.

When in Gibraltar, visit the Angry Friar for a pint.

Anyone here ever been to Gibraltar?

The Angry Friar is among my favorite bars in the world, right next to a couple in the honch in Yokosuka.

Haha, Brits have infiltrated the nicer parts of Spain so successfully they'd be well silly to pull any stunts over Gibraltar. You'd have to deal with a million Sexy Beasts, the junior lager louts and a major impact on the economy.

Strange that the Spanish have come to neat political arrangements with the Basques, Catalans etc but Gibraltar is a fait accompliat which gets right up their collective arse.

It seems Gibraltar is a very important symbol for the Spanish:

The Pillars of Hercules is the ancient name given to the promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. They are Gibraltar in Europe and Monte Hacho in Ceuta in Africa. The Jebel Musa, west of Ceuta, in Morocco, is sometimes considered one of the Pillars.

The Pillars of Hercules has its origin in Greek mythology as the Pillars of Heracles which is the indefinite name of the ancient Greek hero Hercules (Which is also the more famous name of the mythical hero).

The naming of the pillars

When Hercules had to perform twelve labours, one of them was to fetch the Cattle of Geryon in Spain and bring it to Eurystheus. On his way to the island of Erytheia he had to cross the mountain that was once Atlas. Instead of climbing the great mountain, he cut corners and put his mind to work. He decided to use his great strength to smash through the colossal mountain that used to be a colossal giant. Hercules split it in half using his indestructible mace or club (Myths vary). By doing so, he connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and formed the Strait of Gibraltar. One part of the split mountain is Gibraltar and the other is Monte Hacho. These two mountains taken together have since then been known as the Pillars of Hercules or Heracles.

The pillars as portals

The pillars are also mentioned at some places as portals, or gates to different locations on Earth. When the Carthaginian admiral Himilco was sent to explore the area of the Muddy Sea (a shallow plateau that lies to the southwest of the Pillars) his report included the words "Many seaweeds grow in the troughs between the waves, which slow the ship like bushes {...} Here the beasts of the sea move slowly hither and thither, and great monsters swim languidly among the sluggishly creeping ships" (Rufus Festus Avienus) This description accurately resembles the Sargasso Sea rather than the Muddy Sea.

The Pillars appear as supporters of the coat of arms of Spain. The motto Plus Ultra (Latin for further beyond) indicates the desire to see the Pillars as an entrance to the rest of the world rather than as a gate to the Mediterranean Sea, as opposed to Non Plus Ultra (nothing further beyond), the phrase inscribed in the mythological columns indicating their antique condition of border of the known world. It also indicates the overseas possessions that Spain once had.

Thanks to DammitIForgotMyLogin, I learned something today via Fark that I wasn't even aware of.

Reading up on Ceuta and Melilla caused me to read a few of the associated articles. I also had no idea that illegal african immigration into southern Spain and some Italian islands was as rampant as it seems to be.

I mean, it doesn't approach the volume the constitutes hispanics crossing the American southern border...but still. Interesting reading.
