1. 400k will get you squat in Livingston
2. While their schools are OK, their sports teams all suck
3. Towns don't like to be thought of of Newark Suburbs. Livingston is actually probably a better commute to NYC than West Nyack is.

West Chester for Philly? Yeah, if I want to drive over an hour to Center City with any traffic at all (read: almost all the time) and much longer if you actually work in Center City.

Yeah, that was my thought too. Perhaps if you have no debt whatsoever (I'm looking at you Student loans, and to a leser extent car and Credit Cards), you could afford a $500k house on $60k a year. but even then, you'd still be living paycheck to paycheck.

FTFA He looks for places that suit the typical professional American family, making $50,000 or $60,000 a year.

Take West Nyack, N.Y., this year's best affordable New York City suburb. About a 30-minute drive from Manhattan, West Nyack is one of five villages and hamlets that make up an area on the western bank of the Hudson River known as "The Nyacks."

The neighborhood, which has a median home price of $605,700 (vs. New York City's $963,700),

uhhh...I don't think 605k will "suit" you if you make 50-60k a year.

While technically part of Toronto proper, central North York is by far the nicest upper-middle class area in the GTA, and is close to transit, freeways, shopping, schools, all that jazz.

It will if you jump on one of those hot new negative amoritization loans :)

Top 25 slide show? christ, just give me the list already. And #24 Mukilteo Washington is pretty nice, if you don't mind the constant ferry traffic, long lines and weekend tourists, not to mention the nightmarish commute into Seattle via I-5. Na, no burbs for me.

I thought towns surrounding SLC, Tucson, St. Louis and the like would be named. Not uppity penny loafer neighborhoods listed in this article. I think the writer has a huge penis hole in his head.

$450K over 30 years will run you 3000 a month, plus taxes and utilities.

Folks making 60K a year are probably taking home 800 a week.

You cannot do it. even if you had no kids, and ate Raman every night.

If you make $60K, and want a house, please consider Lawerance MA, not Sharron.

I remember when you were first moving to Houston, and I gave you some recommendations for places to live in the Med Center.

I swear to you that it wasn't that bad when I recommended it to you.

The other night, I walk into the laundry room and see two guys and a girl smoking black and milds. In the laundry room. Where people wash their clothes.

I tell them to get out if they want to smoke, and they biatch and moan like I'm the waste of skin.

We're moving as soon as our lease is up, as well.

I grew up in Sharon, MA and it certainly is a nice place to be a kid. The schools aren't as good as the article paints it (or weren't when I lived there) and religious diversity means 70% Jewish, but who cares about details? Oh, and the property taxes are through the roof.

In terms of the comment that the median house price of $493,900 is affordable, that is in comparison to towns closer to Boston where the median home price comes in closer to the $750-1 Million range. It's a nice safe town which is relatively close to Boston (20 miles) where, by comparison at least, homes are more affordable. And you get one of the highest concentrations of Jewish people outside of Israel, what more could you ask for?

2006-11-29 03:36:29 PM
West Chester? That's like a friggin hour from Philly if you're lucky. Why not Media borough? It's closer, getting all slick and refurbished facades like all these Trader Joe's whitebread plastic fantastic wouldn't-know-fun-or-soul-if-it-collided-directly-with-their-frontbrains middle-aged upper-middle-class parents of boring indecisive slackers like, right? And it's got a trolley down its main street! C'mon! MEDIA! MEDIA! MEDIA! EVERYBODY'S HOMETOWN!

Matthews, NC??? WTF
No class, yuppie infested. It can't even be considered a suburb of Charlotte any more, because it has been engulfed by it.

/stip malls and suv's
//houses are much cheaper north

And a $400k house is supposed to be a "good deal"?!

Can get a nice home for a lot cheaper in Helena, AL- suburb to Birmingham. Just as nice as Pearland/Sugarland TX, where my sister lives.

/ok, sure. It is next to Birmingham... what do you want for $200k?

Uhm... I think the overpaid journalist may have a slightly slanted opinion of what "affordable" is.

Some people think they need way more out of a house than is necessary, or even tasteful.
I grew up in a 4 bedroom, 2300sqft home in a nice neighborhood, with nice schools, that was 100k (now appraised at 145k.) This is in the suburbs of a major city with a grat job market. I was looking at my neighborhood on zillow.com and the new neighborhood set up right behind our back fence (where my forest and multi-level arboral fortress used to be, bastards!). My neighbors from the "older" neighborhood have a 180k, 2600sqft, 5 bedroom house. Behind them, in the new neighborhood, there is a 540k, 5900sqft, 5 bedroom house. That's double the square footage! I've been in my (old) neighbor's house, and it seemed quite open and spacious. I can't imagine how they use up the space in the "new" house. Indoor swimming pool? 4 home theatres? Indoor lemur conservatory?

That's like a friggin hour from Philly if you're lucky

Exactly what I was thinking. Unless you just sold a home and have a couple hundred grand in equity you cant afford to live there.

Hey, I remember that, too. I'm not sure I ever emailed you back, so sorry about that, shiat was crazy for a few weeks. We found a really great place, but it's just the area in general that's in trouble. FEMA checks run out real soon, too, so it's about the get twice as bad.

Dude in our complex just got his Escalade's rims jacked. Next day some farkers pretended to be moving out of an apartment... well, they moved some poor bastard's crap out of an apartment, that's for sure -- IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. Took everything except the fridge, stove, washer, and dryer. And this is not a trashy joint, either. Mostly young professionals and medical residents. We need some better farking security.

/end rant

Roswell, GA?

That is in Fulton County and the property taxes for Fulton are insane iirc. That is one of the reasons my parents left Fulton 8 years ago. I think they were paying almost 8k a year for a house in Buckhead they bought back in the 70's.

2006-11-29 03:42:51 PM
Sharron,MA???

LOL!

Malden, Stoneham, Salem, Beverly, all better and less expensive place to live just outside Boston...
