What does all of this data mean? Other than how particular basically-arbitrary groups of students tended to do on a particular type of test in a particular year, I mean.

No kidding Jdornan, people always complain about "race issues", but then no one seems to try to make light of who is what race.

I don't live in the US so I don't do SATs. In Britan we have a superiour education system.

Scores seem to be a bit uneven but not overly so. Not a lot worth mentioning here.

Hmmmm.... A bunch of ethnic groups take a test, and certain groups constantly do better than other groups. So therefore, it must be the TEST's fault. Wonderful logic.

On the average, SAT scores directly corellate to your IQ.

In general, SAT scores, and IQ, have nothing to do with how well you do in college, since college consists of more than intelligence, including things like study habits, attendance, and the types of courses you take.

Theare hardly "arbitrary". With the amount of people taking the SAT in california, there is obviously a statistically signifigant difference in scores on the SAT.

How can you not think its important when its used by colleges for admittance all over the US?

It means that obviously either there is a difference in the ability in testing of certain ethnic groups.

SATs are useless for determining who will go to college. What really matters is whether or not you have enough money and who your parents are.

I bet if they did a breakdown by income bracket, the reason why certain ethnic groups get lower scores would become readily apparent.

Emma: its the Scholastic Assessment Test. It basically measures verbal and mathetical skills and is used heavily in admissions to colleges.

I did shiatty on the SAT in high school and would probably do worse now. I did graduate with a 4.0 though, so.......nevermind.

I should elaborate, since the article didn't even make mention of the B.I.T.C.H. In 1972, a psychologist actually made the Black Intelligence Test of Cultural Homogeneity, since blacks scored significantly lower on the standard IQ test due to it being from a middle-class white perspective.

The more people you have takeing the test the chances of the score lowering is greater whites (biggest ethenticy) compared to asians (smallest ethenticy). Also it me just be me but all my asian friends do pretty good in school. They tell me where they came from they have little chance of going to school. So therereally eager to learn.

There are two sections of the test, Verbal and Math. Each test has a score ranging from 200 (no questions right) to 800 (all questions right). The scores in between 200 and 800 depend on how the bell-curve of test-takers do that year (so the *hardness* of the test year-to-year, which varies, is balanced against the raw scores of the test-takers, and tabulated to determine final numerical scores per test per year).

Four years ago, I got a 710 Verbal and 800 Math. :)

Here's a question... Why does race matter at all?

Why should someone have to mark off thier race in a checkbox for anything. So long as there's a checkbox for race, there will be racism. Why can't SAT scores along with everything else be reported as just a total inclusive number, like: SAT scores were up or down for the nation.

Stop using race to catagorize anything, for good or bad, and soon rasism will vanish.

Like most things American - what the government asks of you and gives you is little (taxes, schooling, health care). Yet we still have students from around the globe attending our public and private universities.

American schooling on the high school level leaves much to be desired. Yet somehow, many of us go on to excellent universities and become global influences.

That's right TheBigZ, Educational Testing Services, the company that administers the test, SHOOTS for a national average of 500 every time. :) That's the idea. Then you can see (in theory) who is above average or below average compared to his/her peers every year.

BTW, right now the University of California system is considering tossing the SAT part of admissions requirements altogether.. they know it isn't all its cracked up to be.
