I went there when I was teenager.
That place made me very depressed.

2006-11-27 12:09:52 PM
Seriously? They're complaining that the free images that no one but locals could identify unless you were standing on top of them are old?

You get what you pay for, I guess.

According to Google Earth, I live either in or on top of a lake. My parent's house is a tree, and my brother's entire suburb is farmland. I guess Iowa and Oklahoma don't get updated too much.

While here, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with Google Earth you can see a guy walking his dog, some kids playing basketball, a colleague's motorcycle parked at work.

Those images are coming from the state's MassGIS system. Apparently Iowa, Oklahoma, and Liverpool haven't shelled out for the high-def satellite shots.

I'd be satisfied if Google had 3m resolution of my town like they do of the Harrisburg area. Right now my house looks like a beige smear.

Google Earth merely shows Real Earth as Google desires it to be.

Those areas of Real Earth that do not currently conform to what is depicted on Google Earth will soon be brought into alignment.

In, of course, a gentle, do-no-evil sort of way.

Liverpool is only worth visiting if you have family there or if you're a hard core Beatles fan.

/can't think of any other legit reasons to visit that dump

You can see my car parked at my parents house, and at my school, its pretty cool. Of course the pictures are from when I was in high school so thats at least 6-7 years old

It's an industrial wasteland amirght?

Google Earth bathed my whole area in this other-worldly, utopian glow; almost as though elves lived here. But, then again, I do live about 10 miles from their main campus.

Mercutio879: I guess Iowa and Oklahoma don't get updated too much.

They tell me I live four houses down. How does that happen? The neighborhood has been there for 30 years...

According to Google, my dorm doesn't have a roof.

The google earth of my house is okay, but that Microsoft Live thing (which was not up, last time I checked) showed a scary amount of detail. You could see my grill (and the grill cover laying next to it), my mailbox, and me, walking down my driveway.

I once had to drive to Liverpool to pick up some expensive monitors. Had to stand outside and guard the truck because they would have been stolen in under a minute.
They'd run like the clappers if they had their shiny shell suit on and curly perm.

I got hit on several times while just driving around town (in an Iveco Truck) - I think I could have been a gigolo if I had a new-ish car and some sunglasses.

2006-11-27 02:07:51 PM
I just went to GoogleEarthed Liverpool and it doesn't look too bad.

They have my house pre-hurricane. I've emailed Google to send the satellite over again soas to relfect the absence of 2 trees around my propertah.

Google Earth images for Toronto and surrounding area are about 5 years out of date. I guess there's no pressing reason to take hi-res satellite images of it.

The beauty of slagging off all of Liverpool on thar Intarwebs is that we now know the council are currently using the computer for looking at Google earth so no-one will notice.

lol people in Liverpool are all thieves

If you said something similar about a racial minority it would be racism, you didn't but it is just as ignorant

but then i am on the internet

i would rather be in Liverpool than most other cities in the UK it ain't the best but it sure isn't the worst, has anyone ever been to Hull?

2006-11-27 03:03:27 PM
...why does everyone biatch so much that those images are out of date? The fact that they layed that much surface space together is enough for me. If I can't view the newest parts of town, I don't care. the general idea stands.

And anyone complaining about it not pinpointing their house- you know how hard that is? If it's within a block I say good job.

I always figured there were security reasons for using satellite images that were a bit outdated. I don't want people to be able to get real-time overhead footage of my home.

That said, I have used the satellite views to help plot out things for the business I work at, which has a large lot.

2006-11-27 03:34:27 PM
If you really want to hear Scousers whine (and who does?) then just persuade Liverpool city council to stump up the money to retask a satellite for some up to date imaging.

Then tell the residents of Liverpool it's being paid for by the next massive hike in council taxes.

I dunno, that whole area is a top secet chemical laboratory property. Maybe Atlantis.

Works fine for my house. GE shows a tarp I had over a chicken coop which is gone now. It was up for 8 months, so it had to be within then...

Well, my grandparents farmland in Montana has finally been updated sometime within the last year. The images aren't the same queality as I get for Chicago, but they are a huge improvement over what was there originally.

Before youcouldn't even make out a building. Now, you can pick out farm equipment and such in the fields.

So, at least it is getting updated in some areas.

/likes checking out major metro downtown areas w/ large buildings on Google.

When I went visiting all over the UK in 1993 Liverpool was the one place where I didn't feel it was safe to leave my room at the Y, and I walked through Brixton most nights during my whole month in London, so you can imagine how welcoming the Merseyside looked... I think they had a law decreeing that no tree should be visible anywhere within city limits. Nothing but asphalt and crumbling concrete...

2006-11-27 06:04:50 PM
This work took place between 2000 and 2001, which means the Google Earth images are at least five years old.

Isn't this kinda well known?

2006-11-27 06:18:17 PM
Google will be happy to update the pictures if the complainers would be willing to supply some high-res, geo-referenced photos themselves. They did for my town - in the last update of the area on GE (about 1-2 years ago), we went from nice high-res imagery to being really ugly low-res (with nice high-res imagery of exciting farmland just to the east and west). Eventually someone in our city office decided to send over the nice new high-resolution imagery the city had done about a year or two back, and Google was happy to include it. So now we get the same high-res airphotos on GE as on the city planner's website.

Point of the post - if they're that worried about it, they are free to pay someone to produce some up-to-date imagery, which Google will be happy to include.

Tate Gallery on the docks. The museums are not bad either. I've also seen a number of bands there. Oh and Cream (RIP) was a great dance club. Enough for ya or do I have to mention football (aka soccer) as well??

Hey!! I am from Liverpool, and FYI it is the European Capital of Culture for 2008, beating off cities like Barcalona and Paris. No, I don't know how we did it either.
