(Miami Herald)   If you're a white town manager, don't call your black assistant "mammy". If you get caught, don't apologize by saying that you love Aunt Jemima   (miami.com) divider line 167

Most of my clients are black women.
All of them have come to expect me to address them as Ma'm.
Unless they are offended, and they correct me if they are, they just espect me so say yess'm and no ma'm when having a conversation.
I would expect a sir when dealing with customer service, as well, but seldom get that.
Maybe our company just does it right.

There is a very, very big difference between "Ma'am" and "Mammy"!

I really do fear for this country when whites are the minority. Then we too can fall into a cesspool of a non-functioning country, because it seems very few ethnicities other than whites know how to run a country.

South Africa under whites...good....under blacks terrible
Mexico under european spanish...good....under current mexicans...terrible
Africa..shiathole
Middle East...shiathole
India..semi-shiat hole

There's no doubt, if whites didn't know how to run countries, why are the third worlders and every ethnicity under the sun clawing their way desperatly into white european nations. Eventually they'll turn those countries into the shiatholes they came from, because they couldn't run a country for shait.

No SHiat?
That is exactly why I use the term.

We had a bigot in the burbs who wanted t circulate a petition to keep a family of "those people" out.
He received a petition with all the block's family members ' signatures on it saying wee didn't want any bigots in the neighborhood. They moved out in one week.
The other family moved in the next.
Place was relatively nicer after that.
I stll can't figure out the rest of the world.

GoSurfing: I am not proud of being white because pride is hubris. Hubris is a sense of superiority.

No, hubris is excessive pride. One can live with pride but without hubris. Example--I'm proud of the fact that I kick ass at my job. I don't go around rubbing this in people's faces, nor does this pride get in the way of my ability to do my job well or my humility when I make mistakes.

Hubris would be making mistakes and being unwilling/unable to take the blame, because I believe I'm too good to possibly be the one at fault.

I'm actually discussing the concept of hubris right now (well, this past and next week) with my students as we read the book "The Odyssey"--we look at how Odysseus's actions were an example of hubris and draw modern parallels.

Pride is a valid emotion, as long as it's tempered with humility and a willingness to acknowledge imperfection.

on a completely unrelated language note, the same word in tahiti is a term of respect and endearment for older women.

i highly doubt that was what he was thinking though when he said it.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe it isn't as simple as that? Ever heard of something called colonialism? If you bothered to crack open a book once in a while, you might learn that a lot of those countries were pretty damn good at periods in history when Europe was a festering shiathole.

And you're a racist, by the way.

I never once in my life heard of the word "mammy" and certainly not as a derogitory term. I bet 90% of the people on fark didn't know that the Italian word for 'eggplant' is like saying attractive and successful African-American elsewere. Let these old-ass words die people.

USA is not a white european country, and more ppl try to get in here than europe.

"Remember FDR: "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country"?"

Actually, Pres. Kennedy said that. The line FDR is best known for is "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

As for the other stuff you wrote...well, other farkers are covering that.

Random question - how can people honestly think that racial issues are a thing of the past? Martin Luther King was killed only a year before I was born (I'm 37), which means the Civil Rights Movement and the social BS that made it necessary is still very much a living memory - some of the people who fought the BS, the ones who perpetuated the BS, people effected by the BS AND the offspring raised by the pro- and anti-BS people are still alive. If this happened 200+ years ago, one could probably argue that enough time had passed for this particular BS to be chipped away at. However, the events are recent enough that some of the players are still alive and kicking, which means it wasn't THAT long ago.

hich means we can still feel the effects of the BS, hence the Affirmative Action to try and force employers NOT to be asshat bigots.

how can people honestly think that racial issues are a thing of the past?

Because without that false premise, they wouldn't be able to cry "the blacks/mexicans and coming up and terkin er jerbs!"

some of the people who fought the BS, the ones who perpetuated the BS, people effected by the BS AND the offspring raised by the pro- and anti-BS people are still alive.

That kinda thing scares me. To think that at least half the people in government today were split among whether or not it was "right" to give blacks the same kind of protection whites do.

If you're a white town manager

What do they sell at White Town? And why would a black person want to work there?

Isn't that like a black person going to Cracker Barrel?
