I resent that.

Well yes. The only people in favour of separation are the uneducated, retarded neds who think patriotism is a virtue.

Unfortunately, they make up most of the population of non-central Glasgow, and they vote.

Scotland is trying to leave the UK?

Are we going to have an SRA too?

F*ck it, let's make England leave the UK instead. Or maybe just the part of England where Blair is. Set him adrift, that's the ticket.

2006-11-24 07:21:15 AM
Meh, They have twice as much representation as the rest of the UK in goverment and get the most financial support. Let em go if they want. See how they do.

2006-11-24 07:21:46 AM
You could always just take him back. Nothing worse than a Scot pretending to be English.

FTFA: Mr Blair will [. . .] appeal directly to the "shared values" which Scotland and England have in common.

Drinking loads of Guinness and starting fights at football matches???

2006-11-24 07:27:05 AM
Blair hasn't exactly made one proud to be part of the UK in recent years, eh? We are going through a similar situation in Canada where the Prime Minister is a giant douchebag, and it's hurting our national unity.

To all you farkers in the UK, I hope your country pulls through this intact. And all you Quebec farkers, vive le Canada uni!

2006-11-24 07:31:59 AM
The Scots are in and out of unity with England more than dicks into a hooker.

Make up your mind Jimmy!

autopsybeverage:

Guiness is Irish. And if Billy Connolly is to be believed, Scotsmen drink Bovril at football matches. It's some sort of beef broth drink. Considering these people invented haggis, I'm no surprised.

2006-11-24 07:41:09 AM
Cue Renton's "It's shiate being Scottish!" rant from Trainspotting in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ...

CaptainBeer: It's some sort of beef broth drink.

"Full of hot beefy goodness" .. somehow I don't think that tagline would be allowed in today's innuendo conscious advertising market.

Haggis is nice btw

twofourtysix: Well yes. The only people in favour of separation are the uneducated, retarded neds who think patriotism is a virtue.

Had an English guy lecture me about his opinion on Scotland's position within the UK, why did Scots have a problem with England, why don't we be happy and work together, etc. (*)

The irony was that the logic he was using to support a more Anglo-friendly attitude could have been applied *identically* to UK's position within the EU. Yet he wasn't keen on the EU.

I love the way (some) English people defend the Union, but are rabidly opposed to the EU (Scottish independence "parochialism" bad, English/"British" parochialism good).

My impression of the guy above was that he saw Scotland as part of "Greater England"; well, sorry, but it isn't and never was. From Scotland's perspective, the Union was done for pragmatic and political reasons. Sure, there have been times when *some* Scots have favoured the "Greater England" approach, but it's never got to the stage where Scots as a whole gave up their identity altogether.

((*) This is the same guy that didn't know there was a difference between Lowland "Scots"- a language based on dialects of old English- and "Gaelic"- an entirely unrelated language. Even after this was pointed out dismissed it as English with silly pronunciations. He was an okay person in some respects, but a good illustration of the blinkered, just-don't-get-it English point of view).

2006-11-24 07:53:28 AM
Well I'm all in favour of Scotland becoming and independant country. Let's just untie the apron strings, send back the 800,000 scots who will then be foreign nationals working without work permits, and then they'll be able to forge themselves a destiny while we in the rest of the UK will be able to go on without an expensive drain on the exchequer, and 800,000 more jobs for the unemployed!

/just kidding
//would be a bleak place without the scottish lassies

The Scots are the UK's Palestinians.

2006-11-24 08:06:14 AM
Well, as long as he's got their best interests at heart...

Mr Blair's speech to Labour's Scottish conference comes as polls suggest his party is heading for a severe drubbing in the May elections for the Scottish Parliament.

Eh?

Would Great Britain become Really Good Britain?

2006-11-24 08:08:58 AM
It's funny that the Scot's who are attached to the England want to seperate from the UK and the N.Irish protestants who aren't attached to Ebgland want to remain part of the UK.

Maybe the Scots should move to N.Ireland and the N.Irish protestants should move to Scotchland.

This is almost exactly like the thread yesterday about Quebec. Can we get it up to 400 posts?

Can we start with the MacDonald Brothers? The missus makes me watch that god-awful 'X Factor' crap every week, and those two bastards are the musical equivalent of gorilla-rape.

2006-11-24 08:15:34 AM
Cool, that would make me half foreign; my kids are half American and I'm jealous of their exoticism! It's fun to be half white and half, er, whiter.

Seriously though, can we stop giving them our taxes now? And can we give them back Tony B. and Gordon Brown? They can fight amongst themselves whilst eating haggis and freezing their backsides off in the constant rain.

/Yes, even more rain than England, all the bloody time.

2006-11-24 08:16:35 AM
And allow me to say that I HAVE eaten haggis and it wasn't that bad. Just the fact that I knew what it was made of was the revolting part. And I'm sure that if the pitch is windy one might really NEED a drink full of "hot beefy goodness". So no offence meant to the Scots or their cuisine.

2006-11-24 08:18:49 AM
costas: gorilla-rape.

I'd hate to think what size you must be if you can rape a gorilla.

Personally, I'm quite happy with the political arrangements for Scotland. We do well enough.

AaaPha: Seriously though, can we stop giving them our taxes now?

Only if you pay us back for the gas that was taken from Scottish territorial waters, mmkay?

CaptainBeer: Just the fact that I knew what it was made of was the revolting part

What's wrong with the ingredients of haggis? It's offal and barley, in a casing made from intestines (most natural sausage casing is made the same way) Many other products contain similar ingredients.

/loves me the haggis

2006-11-24 08:24:12 AM
Gavino: You could always just take him back. Nothing worse than a Scot pretending to be English.

Not likely; you wanted the c***, you bloody keep him! Anyway, he's not "pretending" to be English (a la Gordon Brown); the guy's thoroughly Anglicised, having spent much of his childhood in England and his grandparents were English (paternal, both) and Irish (maternal, both) respectively.

The_Religious_Left: Blair hasn't exactly made one proud to be part of the UK in recent years, eh?

If Blair supported Bush on "moral" grounds, he's a deluded incompetent twat.

If he supported him to retain/gain influence with the U.S., then he failed- it's been obvious to anyone for a *long* time that he has no such influence. Any half-competent leader should have realised this long before now. Bush and friends only do things they would have done anyway; figures in the U.S. government have pretty much admitted that Blair has little actual influence.

That France and Germany ended up having as much real influence (despite their lack of ass-kissing) and that Blair tried to make himself useful as an unwanted and unecessary mediator between them and the U.S says it all.

IMHO, *that's* the truth behind Blair- incompetence. He reminds me of a schoolkid trying to hang out with the popular kids, getting messed around and taken advantage of- and still putting up with it.

2006-11-24 08:31:27 AM
1. Haggis is good; don't knock it till you've tried it.
2. Bovril is more or less necessary when standing outside for four hours in 3 degree weather with rain, a 38 mph wind, and you're only wearing a kilt and the bastard security officers won't let you in if they think you're too drunk.
3. As stated, Guiness is Irish.
4. This argument is silly; it has about as much realistic chance of succeeding as Quebec does of getting out of Canada, and it sounds just as whiny.

2006-11-24 08:31:29 AM
Ah, the final crumbling of the British empire.

2006-11-24 08:31:53 AM
Have they got any oil left? If we've finished their oil they can go.

2006-11-24 08:32:41 AM
jjorsett: The Scots are the UK's Palestinians.

Uh... no, we're not.

I know there are a number of very different perspectives on the Palestinians, but regardless of which one you choose, saying that the Scots are the Palestinians of the UK is utter bollocks.

2006-11-24 08:35:31 AM
Is this going to affect the price of Scotch Whisky?

I can hear the protesters now.

Sure. You are right. I'm Cambridge educated (Medieval Studies), from non-central Glasgow (Maryhill) and I support full independance. But you are right. I vote.

2006-11-24 08:39:37 AM
I support Scottish independence too. It will make it more susceptible to invasion by the Republic of Alabama.

jre:

I say let them go. They're whining abuse because their mommy didn't buy them an Xbox. They'll fail, come crawling back, and the Sovereignist movement will be effectively squashed.

Whoops, wrong thread. That was from the Quebec thread yesterday.

How about this one?
Seriously though, can we stop giving them our taxes now? And can we give them back Tony B. and Gordon Brown? They can fight amongst themselves whilst eating haggis and freezing their backsides off in the constant rain.

Yep. He said "haggis" not "poutine" so this one's definitely about Scotland.

This one's kind of funny 'cause it technically refers to both countries in a round-about way.

Quit being so French about it. Either have a bloody civil war, like a proper nation of secessionists or STFU. Either merde or get off the pot.

I love it when two different threads bring out the same people with different accents!

thats the biggest load of pish I've heard in a while.

Most of the "retarded neds" certainly don't vote, and don't know how to vote, along with a large part of Glasgow that can't vote because they don't register (to avoid their address being sold on to debt collectors)

2006-11-24 09:02:29 AM
I'm normally a Unionist, but with the UK going the way it is right now, I think that an independent Scotland will preserve the freedoms I enjoy far longer than future UK government will.

Freedom trumps the Union, so I'll be voting nationalist until the politics in Brtiain changes.

2006-11-24 09:14:34 AM
F*ck it, let's make England leave the UK instead.

Exactly. It was a Scots king who took over at the 'Union of Crowns', so the poms in their vassal state should STFU.

Will the Brits have to re-design the Union Jack?
