Well it's not fake, my grandfather had it and survived it and I had a tumor removed this past summer and was diagionsed with it. And i am surviving... but I am also only 21... so maybe age and health make a difference... and just so ya'll know... I am not fat by anymeans.. i'm about 5'10 and weigh 155lbs run 10 miles twice a week and run in the houston marathon every year... so shove it up your pie holes. :-D have a good night too!

Every woman I know who has known a man with breast cancer has told me he's dead

Yeah, I'd base my odds of survival on the third-hand anecdotes.

Poncho, that's icky.

And the "official" name of the show is House MD. It's been abbreviated since its pilot episode.

The real question here is if guys get a mammogram, would it hurt more or less since there's usually less to squeeze?

Same goes for girls with small boobs?

/or does it just hurt like hell no matter what sex you are?
//thankfully doesn't have to worry about those doctors visits for many years.

is there such a thing as pec cancer?

no? good.

2006-11-22 12:49:47 AM

A mammogram is an X-ray of the chest. Usually the side view is the most helpful and relevant. They have specialized machines where you put a boob in each cavity and your done a few minutes later without needing to appear topless in front of anyone.

As for squeezing a man's pectorals... Squeezing doesn't hurt, at least not more than any other body part and provided the pecs are muscular or at least tight.

I think if it hurts, you're probably not doing it right. Try to do more of a massage than a pinch/squeeze. If there's a hard lump you'll still be able to feel it without being too rough.

A mammogram is an x-ray test that produces an image of the inner breast tissue on film. This technique, called mammography, is used to visualize normal and abnormal structures within the breasts. Mammography, therefore, can help in identifying cysts, calcifications, and tumors within the breast. It is currently the most effective way to detect early breast cancer. Breast self- examination (BSE) on a monthly basis and examination by a doctor are still important, but physical examinations typically find breast cancers when they are much larger than those detected by mammography. While mammography can discover a small cancer in a curable stage it not foolproof. Ten to fifteen percent of breast cancers are not identified by mammography and these cancers are found by physical examination.

HtotheB - Why's breast cancer more important than all the other cancers?

Think of the boobies.

I was a medical insurance claims processor/customer service rep for TEN years. Yes, there are claims/diagnosis for this, and I've even spoken to a man who had this. Yes, we men have "breast" tissue in front of our pecs. Yes, men can get breast cancer. Seen the bills, paid the claims, spoke to the guy.

From a guy who's mother died of breast cancer in 2004, I must back you up. And for all the grief you're gonna get, let one guy who's actually seen his mother wither and die from it support your argument since you're right. There are thousands of diseases out there and being a "victim" or a family member of a victim of breast cancer doesn't make you more important than a sister/brother of a person who dies from heart disease, and vice/versa.

/hates "Victim Mentality" including "My disease is more important than yours" mentality - including AIDS.
//mother really died from Breast Cancer 2004.

2006-11-22 01:08:50 AM
h to the 'ojo is correct... for the most part.

the superior -> inferior view is mostly standard, but often an axillary view of the "tail" of the breast tissue is included (tail is up near the armpit).

Ideally a view of the entire breast tissue, up to and including the wall of the pectoralis majoris is required. the only real difference between male and female mammography is the amount of tissue being viewed.

/breast implants are a pain in the arse, requiring different viewing as well as different technical factors.
//funny they don't want guys in my field to do this too often.
///if you're a female, start getting mammograms early (age 20+ is starting to be recommended), and get them yearly.
////you know your own body better than a tech or doctor ever could, if something feels wrong get checked.

HtotheB - Why's breast cancer more important than all the other cancers?

Seems to me it should be one of the least important if we disregard the relative frequencies of cancers. You can live without a breast. Try living without lungs. Or a stomach. Or a liver.

Early detection of these cancers probably more important.

And that's the point -- breast cancer isn't special (except in the minds of some weirdo folks who think it's a political issue), but it's detectable early (get a mammogram) and treatable early, so it doesn't have to spread to the other organs of which you speak.

Vertdang, Thanks for cutting me some slack. I understand the point is to view the breast tissue without the interference of other parts. After all, I'm just a guy living in a van down by the river. Once a week I take that van to the local mall and give free breast exams--for FREE

I am aware of prostate and testicular cancers, but is penis cancer at all common? If so, I think I might have some good fund-raising ideas

Male breast cancer is nothing new. Now, if you can find a male with uterine cancer, you might have a headline.

Um, isn't SHAFT aka Richard Roundtree a survivor of breast cancer? I think that was a clue on Jeopardy a couple of months ago...

2006-11-22 02:07:53 PM
Yes, men get breast cancer too. It's not unheard of at all.
The thing is that so many women are concerned about teh boobies that they think breast cancer is more widespread than it is.

The #1 killer of women is actually heart disease. It's ironic to see women scarfing down cheeseburgers at a breast cancer fundraiser.

2006-11-22 04:38:50 PM
Why's breast cancer more important than all the other cancers?

Because virtually all victims are women.

2006-11-22 05:08:10 PM
if it runs in your family, make sure you get checked out, even if you're a guy. it doesn't really matter how big your chest is.
