null/void: If someone sees a bullet lying on the ground in england, we ask ourselves, why is there a bullet on the floor? They use those in rifle shooting ranges, not in my local shop.

And I would ask the same question here in the USA. I would then pick up the round, put it in my pocket and go on with my life. This is a complete non-event which doesn't warrant media or police attention and certainly not statements like "How can you feel safe when you are finding things like this on the street?"

It just makes you guys look ridiculous.

Apropos this story, I have a vague recollection of reading in the news some time ago about a few people in the US receiving single .22 caliber rounds in the mail, interpreting it as a threat and freaking out. Anyone remember this?

2006-11-11 12:14:57 PM
Now here is a meaningful comparison (I don't have any .22 LR laying around but it would be about as tall as the .357 but skinner by half - a nearly meaningless round (unless you are a squirrel))

It was probably caught in someones clothes or in the soles of shoes or something, most likely there harmlessly enough, its just that the british government and media have made ignorant people really scared of guns.....

Why are all of them pistol rounds except the .50BMG ?

Seems a little odd, and why it is only labeled by its diameter?

/also the 9mm should say "9mm parabellum"(means for war)
//otherwise it could be confused with another type of 9mm round

What you feel comfortable with. Never hunt with a gun you are afraid of. Many people get huge guns and then are so afraid of the recoil they flinch and close their eyes. That is dangerous as hell.

That being said, it depends on what you what to bag. For caribou on the tundra a .308 is great or a .300WinMag for longer distances. For moose in thick brush a 45/70government or 45/70Alaskan may be a good choice. The 45/70s would also work for caribou but not that great for any actual distance shots. For Musk Ox the .300WinMag would also work. But make sure you shoot it a lot first. My has a muzzlebrake so it is not so bad a kick, but a lot of guides will not let you use a muzzlebreak as they refuse to wear hearing protection.

"(I don't have any .22 LR laying around but it would be about as tall as the .357 but skinner by half -"

No,a 22 LR is only .98 inch long,a 357 is 1.57 inches long.Even a 22 Mag is only 1.35 inches.

Uncle Karl
The beer is a pistol round? :)
What else would I have labeled them by?

9x19mm or 9mm Luger or 9mm parabellum - which did you prefer? Luger comes from Georg Luger, the engineer and firemars designer who worked on the round at Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM)

The name Parabellum is derived from the Latin: Si vis pacem, para bellum ("If you seek peace, prepare for war"), which was DWM's motto.

BUT ANYWAY, that's missing the point of the picture entirely. I know what they are but this isn't meant to edumacate the masses, just put some perspective on a few. I like the 50 just for comparison's sake.

Kodiak, Alaska? Personally, I recommend you use something that you drop from orbit.

For bear (since you are going to kodaik island) I would take a 45/70 or something similar, basically a powerful round in lever action in case you need a second shot in a hurry.

2006-11-11 12:33:40 PM
I found a 30 06 round when I was a kid. My friend called the police and they said it's only dangerous if it's in a rifle and not to worry. Of course, this was back in '77 before terrorists were lurking behind every street sign.

I would have named them

shiatty beer, .50BMG, .357Mag, .45ACP, .38super, 9mmx19

This gives each one a precise name or description.

Just think of the panic in the streets if it had been a bananna!

2006-11-11 12:52:27 PM
See, you guys have it all wrong. Not even the Brits could be dumb enough to be scared of one little .22 round. But see the Brits know that all guns and ammo give off invisible rays that make anyone who is near them turn into raving psychotics who will then go on killing sprees at local elementary schools. I mean, someone could accidentally touch the bullet and then they would inevitably go on an axe-wielding murder spree. Because it is obvious that guns make people want to KILL, KILL, KILL!

We can't buy ammo in the supermarket like you can in Murica.

Supermarkets don't carry ammo in the US, but fortunately, Wal-Mart does.

Uncle Karl - Get a grip. Did some Brit kid bully you at school?

Fish in a Barrel - Maybe we should be saying 'd*ckhead journalists have nothing exciting to report, so they dramatise some b*llshiat'?

It just makes you guys look ridiculous. - No, it makes a journalist and a few idiots it interviewed look ridiculous...

To be fair, england is full of bullets. If you go for a walk in my area the place is littered with 5.56mm blanks from the army and .303s from WW2...None of these are live however.

If that round is not in a gun it is no more dangerous than a black cat. That is what rimfire is all about.

StomachMonkey: I found one in the parking lot of my apartment once. I put it in my pocket. It might be sitting in a box in my room. Tick tick.

I was a teacher once. One of the kids in class gave me a 9mm round. His brother was in the Army. He was not a bad kid. I said thanks, and that he should never do that again. It's in a box in my room. Tock tock.

And no, that Nagant revolver cartridge is not missing the bullet. It sits about 1/4" inside the case. Very unique.

Nope my family had help.

I threatened no one. I just said I had real bullets, only to a poofter Englishman is that a threat. I also own a knife and may even have a sharp stick. I imagine by now you have peed in you trousers.

Our American cousins can be forgiven for thinking that we Brits were over-reacting, but they must remember that finding ammo in a shop doorway is not a usual occurrence.

In order to understand the shock value of this issue, they should imagine reading the following headline an American newspaper:

"Tub of low-fat yogurt found near McDonalds"

Though I don't know if my winchester or my SW 22A can fire it. I've only ever used .22LR.

He was English, by the way.

Secret Master of All Flatulence

Recalls fondly once seeing a combo "bakery specializing in wedding cakes and gun store" down South a while back.

Years ago I lived in a town with a bar/gun store combination. They weren't allowed to sell hard liquor as I recall. It was one of those small store fronts narrow at the street but pretty long into the building. The bar was on one side and the cases of guns&ammo on the other.

I used to do this inside the house when the weather was too crappy to work. I'd take a cardboard box, fill it with a few newspapers (folded as delivered, not wadded up) or jumk mail to stop the .22 short from penetrating. Add the target of your choice to the box. Shoots fine, you just have to cycle the action by hand if it is a semi-automatic

Two 6'x3'x2' safes full at the moment. They're listed in my profile.

What's the story on your carbine?

Not much exciting. It's your standard Inland mix master with all the GI upgrades, except the flip safety. The M1 carbine is a fantastic weapon, but it just doesn't excite me all that much. I prefer the Garand. :)

Dansker:
"Oh come on, it's not like it's reported as important national news, it's just a story in some local London supplement to the Guardian.
Anyone who's worked in local news knows that nothing is too small or unimportant to get a write-up, and pretty much every story will be blown out of proportion.
I doubt the BBC is going to pick this up."

Dansler, the point is that apparently no where else on earth is finding a .22 short in a doorway the slightest bit newsworthy. In fact, finding anything less than a .22 LR in a person isn't even newsworthy.

Is East London some sort of social backwater, wherein this stuff actually sells papers? I won't argue that the media over here doesn't do the same thing, for example, hyping all those "semiautmatic machineguns" that seem to pop up in every crack house raid, but at least that's deliberate misinformation. The poster who wrote, "I found a rock" neatly sums up the superficial dynamics of this story.

The scary part is that police are treating this as a crime. I'm sorry, if that's the case, then you realy do need to get your county back from whatever the hell is running it into the ground.

Tell me, did any of you Brits out there happen to read 1984?

2006-11-11 03:08:55 PM
Lachewpacabra: The scary part is that police are treating this as a crime.

Maybe they think the bullet was meant to be some kind of threat? Otherwise it's plainly retarded. Anyway, the paper involved is just a tiny little local thing, and this may well have been their biggest story since the vicars cat got stuck up a tree.

2006-11-11 03:13:10 PM
"People were shocked to find a rake in the yard. If someone were to step on the right end it could cause not only serious injury to the foot, but severe blunt head trauma caused by the long end striking it's victim in the head.

Police were alerted to the incident, the rake was confiscated and authorities warn the negligent party is still at large."

2006-11-11 03:14:41 PM
dfenstrate: Or have they been placed on so slowly you don't even notice?

We Americans don't have a great deal of room to arue this point, lately.

Unfortunately, the same people who like to make fun of countries like Britain for having gun control laws are usually the same types who are OK with our own civil liberties being taken away through things like the Patriot Act, because "they only go after the real criminals" anyway.

Fish in a Barrel: Two 6'x3'x2' safes full at the moment. They're listed in my profile

His point is that an unloaded gun is useless. As is your unloaded head.
