(TrekWeb)   Shatner offers advice to filmmakers on recasting Captain Kirk: "He's got to be handsome. He's got to be athletic. He's got to be rich. He's got to be funny. He's got to get the girl--the sort of things I do"   (trekweb.com) divider line 90

Holy shiat, they're going to cast Woody Allen.

Why do these Klingons keep attacking me? I mean it's ... it's crazy ... i'm such a timid person ... i could be beaten up by Quakers. And warp speed? Why are we always trying to go warp speed? It's ... it's not like we know where we're going ... and anyway, it's undesirable to travel faster than the speed of light. My hat keeps blowing off.

And these green skinned women ... they ... they keep coming on to me. Which is ridiculous. I sold the memoirs of my sex life to a publisher - they are going to make a board game out of it.

Of course he will also have to know how to make gunpowder and a cannon in the middle of a desert while a big lizard is chasing him.

I'm gonna vote for Crispin Glover. 'Cause he's strong. And he can kick.

Captain Kirk was always my favorite Star Trek captain, though Sisko comes a close second. Kirk was always good for plenty of mixing it up with the bad guys, and his fighting doesn't look totally lame, since he actually knew Judo and some boxing (unlike certain pathetic other pathetic characters - Tasha Yar and Dax...), and he was very flamboyant and almost always got the girl.

I'm 100% in favor of bringing Kirk back, rather than giving us incrementally worse seasons of Star Trek with a totally new crew that nobody likes. Next Generation was sometimes ok, Deep Space Nine was at least as good as classic, but Voyager is crud and the other Star Treks aren't even worth mentioning.

It just better be someone with the same charisma and ability for action as Shatner. If they mess up this casting job, the fans will slay them alive, me included.

Oddly enough, ChronicallyCanuck's tenant is the uncle of the Montreal chapter of the William Shatner association.

Smells twice as old as Kirk, but half as cool.

Yeah, I saw it live too. My friends and I can always get a laugh out of each other no matter where we are just by saying "I'm strong..."

It, with Andy/Jerry Lawler punchout were Letterman's two finest moments, IMHO.

You can leave out the part about being rich. I always thought he never kept the girl because he was as dirt poor as most military officers are.

Attention Hollywood:

The cast/characters of Star Trek are not James Bond. DO NOT RECAST, DO NOT DO A PREQUEL!!!!

Honestly, how is this a good idea? How can Kirk and Spock have gone to the academy together, then have Kirk be the one who reached the rank of Captain faster?

When DS9 ended there were alot of things that could have been explored (that Nemesis ignored), Cardassia's recovery from the war, the political changes after the war, Sisko living with the Prophets. And with Voyager returning with 25th century tech (the super ablative armor and transphasic torpedos) there are still more questions to answer, such as what happened to the crew of Voyager (especially the Maquis) and what happened to the Borg (were they finished off or did they recover?).

We do not need a Spock and Kirk together at the academy story line for a movie.

/hates hollywood...

2006-11-10 01:04:38 AM
The only person who could play him is Daniel Craig. It is so obvious.

2006-11-10 01:04:59 AM
He has to be chunky. And a pretty poor actor too. Matt Damon will do fine. Now if they try to cast a younger PIcard...well Patrick Stewart will get his whoopass on.

2006-11-10 01:06:07 AM
OK, I'll probably catch shiat for this, but, yes, Sisko was just as cool as Kirk. He was especially so in the later seasons when Avery Brooks was able to shave his head and channel some of his Hawk character from "Spenser" into the role.

BTW, a few years ago, I heard of a stage production of Othello that had Avery Brooks as Othello and Andre Braugher (from the old "Homicide: Life on the Street" show) as Iago. Damn! That had to be one farking intense performance!

Oh yeah. You should have seen when Iago had Roderigo in the box, and was grilling him. Riveting!

I've liked most of the Star Trek things that have come out.. Most of the movies were pretty good, a couple of them excellent. All of the series had at least some amount of goodness in them (I have not seen any of the newest, "Enterprise", so I can't say anything about that), but I really hope that they dont go through with the prequel idea. It will almost certainly end up terrible if they do..

2006-11-10 01:12:27 AM
Shatner's a pimp. 75 and having the time of his life. Rich, has his third hit TV show, endorsement contracts.

I can understand if you don't like him, but he certainly hasn't "jumped the shark".

2006-11-10 01:14:49 AM
Hmmm. Trekkie here. And, honestly, we'd all do better not delving into Kirk's adolescence and early romantic (if you call knowing a woman for five minutes before he shags her romantic) endeavors. There've been books that we could choose or not choose to read, but a movie-sized prequel will paint big red targets on the backsides of ... well, anyway.

/This can only end in tears

2006-11-10 01:16:31 AM
Kirk has way jumped the shark

Yeah, but then he circled back and painted a clown face on the shark.

Then he jumped on the back of the shark and rode it like a pony.

Then he ate the shark, shat out little sharklets, jumped over them, and started the whole process over again.

I mean, the man gets up for breakfast and by the time he's had lunch, he's reinvented himself so many times, he's come full circle.

His career is indestructable because he's created a vortex of uncool so massive, it sucks all the dorkiness in the universe into itself and compresses it into a paradox -- a single, glimmering gem of coolness so bright, so dazzling, so friggin' complex, there's only one word for it: Shatnerian.

2006-11-10 01:25:22 AM
Man, what's with all the prequels? Is writing a completely new story really that difficult?

/a rhetorical question

2006-11-10 01:28:41 AM
I remember reading a Playboy interview with Shatner too long ago. I was struck by the fact that he didn't take himself too seriously. This was during his 'get a life!' phase. Seems as if he's gotten over taking himself too seriously.

I did like the part in the interview about him not wanting to be a woman as he'd miss his balls clanging together.

/hysterical
//read it for the articles, of course

2006-11-10 01:35:05 AM
You guys are forgetting the best person they could ever cast as James T. Kirk....lance bass. If he can play sephiroth then damn it, he can be Kirk, not to mention wasn't he the one that wanted to get his ass shot into space?

//Thought Picard was way better

Great Janitor

How can Kirk and Spock have gone to the academy together, then have Kirk be the one who reached the rank of Captain faster?

I actually agree W you that this prequel idea sucks however there is a very good answer to that question.

The position of Captain isn't just about book smart but about charisma and the ability to lead people. Spock may be the guy you want behind Kirk doing the calculations but Kirk is the guy that Ensign Johnson pulls on the red shirt and beams down to the planet for.

And with a brain without ego like Spock backing him up Kirk would've been on the fast track to captain.
