(Some Guy)   Jewish man upset he had to vote in a church. Voting for a bunch of lying jackals is OK, but having to do it in a church is just too much   (koat.com ) divider line

I doubt Submitter would feel the same if he had to vote in a mosque...

Why can't we just use public schools, post offices, city halls, etc.? Name one good reason we need to poll in churches, bet you can't.

First off, public schools (usually gymnasiums) and post office annexes are used fairly frequently. And all of the above are open and operating in non-voting functions, so putting polling areas in is going to cause a disruption of service. Churches, for the most part, are not open and operating on Tuesdays. So it makes them the most convenient large, accessible space to conduct a polling op without disrupting regular business.

I wonder what would happen if I showed up to vote in a floor-length black cloak, stood at the door, and said, in a deep, resounding voice, "The One you worship is distasteful to me. I require that a ballot be brought outside for my use."

-3 Submitter for missing the entire point.

Seeing a cross hanging above a voting booth has to have an effect on some religions voters casting their ballot on religiously controversial issues.

It's effectively campaigning against abortion and against gay marriage inside the polling station.

TFA

"Dr. Zeev Bar-Av of Middleton said issues on Tuesday's ballot such as gay marriage and the death penalty "are essentially on the national divide on religion and non-religion."

"he was disturbed to see a crucifix hanging over a ballot box."

2006-11-09 10:36:57 PM
Fine, if you are offended, then you figure out where to move the polling place to. There are only so many schools and fire stations.

How about your polling place gets eliminated and rolled into a neighboring precinct. And you can stand in line for twice as long to vote?

That being said, I'm thinking there is somewhere the church that doesn't push their version of Jebus (and his mom since this is a Catholic church) that they could put the voting booths. Stop trying to subtly push your religion on others.

In a word, everybody looses here, and everybody is stupid.

I had to vote at a place named Trinity Episcopal School. It really wasn't a bother, I winked at some moms and did unspeakable things while in the voting booth. I felt better than when I went in, refreshed, actually.

If he is so miffed at the idea of voting in church, he can just go home. Voting isn't compulsory.

I'd go vote even if the polling place is at a sewage treatment plant. I will put up with an inconvenience for the short time in order to have my voice heard in government.

Seperation of church and state..but...Polls in churches as republicans are a religious bunch and only the pervs would be able to find the schools to vote in easily..But are there any alter boys in the church? Stampede and republicans win..

I voted in a public school myself. And where i work, a library, we had voting downstairs. Personally as an agnostic I say keep the voting out of places of worship.

And they kept playing Mel Gibson movies during the voting too.

People aren't as stupid as you think they are. And if they are stupid enough to be swayed by seeing a cross, they probably were swayed by their pastor preaching to them from the pulpit long before they got to the polling place.

In Wisconsin, a Jewish man whose polling place was at a Catholic church said he was disturbed to see a crucifix hanging over a ballot box.

That's weird, I couldn't see any crucifix while hanging over a ballot box.

Of course, in Oregon we vote by mail, and don't stay suspended in midair that long.

/got nothing. Well, except the right to vote at home, I mean.

Why can't we just use public schools, post offices, city halls, etc.? Name one good reason we need to poll in churches, bet you can't.

First of all, who really cares? It's a farking building. I couldn't care less about religion, and I don't give a rats ass if I'm voting in a church (as I do now)--a Baptist church at that.

And public schools are in fact used as polling places. I voted in the school gym of my local public school at my last residence.

I assume post offices are avoided because, well, they are places where business is conducted. The line at my local PO is long enough as it is. I'd just as soon avoid having to dodge hundreds of voters, and a bunch of tables and voting machines. Not to mention the 900 year old election officials.

As for city halls: I'm certain that has to do with the fact there can't be campaigning within so many yards of a polling place. You can't really hold elections in a place where one of the canidates works.

So, there's a few reasons for you.

2006-11-09 10:49:20 PM
Vote absentee, jackal-ass.

2006-11-09 10:49:31 PM
I am an atheist who votes at a church across the street from my house, and I have no problem with it at all. There is no proselytizing going on. All of the poll workers are the same senior citizen volunteers with nothing better to do that you would have at any other polling place.

Yeah, that's why companies like Nike spend 5% of their budget on materials and manufacturing and 95% on every type of media advertising social marketing out there.

/pulling those numbers out of my arse.

I can say that if the polling place around here were a mosque or a synagogue, there'd be a few pissed off rednecks... I like to think most would not care, though. I wouldn't...

What does Lethal Weapon have to do with voting? :P

2006-11-09 10:51:15 PM
I've often wondered about this issue - especially living in the Bible Belt. I agree with many of the points above regarding why churches are better than government offices - mainly that they aren't in use.

I've voted in several different churches and never been in an area that's had a cross or Jesus-whatever. I don't know if that was intentional or just lucky.

I don't see a problem with it as they are generally largish structures that are allowing the community-at-large to utilize the facilities for the (supposedly) greater good of the community.
