Everyones got a price, and with a $600 million war chest, I'm sure they found it.

Nothing says Justice like a big fat wad of cash.

I'm not trying to be Holier-Than-Thou, I really do mean Nothing says Justice like a big fat wad of cash.

I'd say BP has pretty well been "outed" on the safety front already, after the pipeline fiasco. Why waste the money on a trial? They're already on the hot seat.

2006-11-09 04:59:13 PM
Doesn't ring a bell.

2006-11-09 05:00:10 PM
i'm sure she'd feel a lot better if we all judged her harshly.

i can't do it. don't know her situation.

maybe some of you omniscient farkers can do it for me.

2006-11-09 05:00:15 PM
DIAF, oh wait.

2006-11-09 05:00:59 PM
like noone saw that coming. Check please....no really, check please.

Ironically, BP is probably the oil company with the best track record when it comes to safey and environment. I'm guessing the other guys are pretty horrid if that is the case.

2006-11-09 05:01:49 PM
Let's hear it for being worth more dead than alive.....

The funniest thing about this story is how her parents were incenerated to death.

How can an oil company afford this kind of frivolous lawsuit? I think we as consumers should be happy with an increase in gasoline costs to help out poor oil company's.

Sir Charles: everyone has their price.

I give Greenstamps.

She's gonna be able to afford one hell of a doublewide.

This girl is an adult living on her own. Why should BP give this biatch any money. If she misses her parents then I could see BP providing her with a couple of robots to take their place.

2006-11-09 05:06:35 PM
I need graphs to make sense of all of this

2006-11-09 05:10:15 PM
well, to be fair, her lawyers might have told her it was the best way to go, and we all know the lawyers would be totally honest to her about her chances, and work for justice first, now wouldn't they?

2006-11-09 05:10:21 PM
Lawyer Brent Coon said efforts to settle the case included stipulations that BP made the refinery and other facilities safer.

That's exactly what she stated she was hoping for with a trial. Why is she a sell out again?

2006-11-09 05:10:49 PM
In other news BP closed higher today, up 0.33%.

2006-11-09 05:11:03 PM
As someone in the refinery business, this whole story is frustrating. BP does have a pretty good reputation from a health and safety point of view. But Texas City has always been a bit of an anomaly, everyone I have talked to that has worked there has not had great things to say about it. I had a bad vibe about that place even before the accident.

Having been in exactly the position that those that died were in, working out of a trailer right next to an operating unit, I am sick even thinking about how awful that must have been. I really feel for the families left behind.

And now, back to work checking safey systems.

I'd be inclined to agree with you but a portion of the settlement is going to university endowments. And as a chemical engineering student at a major university, I want in.

2006-11-09 05:12:08 PM
thats too funny. I watched the 60 minutes special on this and got the funny feeling during the interview with the "im going to trial girl" that she had big fat dollar signs in her eyes. She got what she wanted.
/and yes, trailertrash came to mind as well

2006-11-09 05:12:10 PM
Her parents were the ones that caused the fire?
/Snotty remark

2006-11-09 05:13:44 PM
I think we should let the giant corporation keep the money they made by endangering people in the area.

The funniest thing about this story is how her parents were incenerated to death.

I enjoy you're sense of humor. +2

I wouldn't be too harsh on her. Sometimes, you get tired of fighting and you want to move on and heal.

The money helps, I'm sure

New fark cliche: DIABPE.

2006-11-09 05:20:58 PM
From TFA:

Earlier this month US investigators found internal BP reports highlighting maintenance backlogs and poor infrastructure at the site.

I'll bet that this, more than anything, really gave BP incentive to find a settlement before some jury bankrupted them.

I'd totally hit it. She's cute and rich. And her daddy can't stop me.

In other news, Farkers who are jealous that their parents haven't been blown up in a refinery explosion, smarmy self-righteousness at 11...

2006-11-09 05:22:46 PM
Two things talk to large corporations: bad publicity and money...looks like she brought lots of A to the table and took away plenty of B. I'd say mission accomplished.

2006-11-09 05:23:50 PM
I would presume she probably had the best of intentions at the beginning, but I am sure the oil companies can pay enough lawyers to keep throwing documents at her that need her own lawyers attention, putting her out of pocket more and more as the case moves on, as well as taking up her time etc. Eventually between hassle, reminding her of the incident that killed her parents, costs, slowly increasing offers to settle, and the risk of outlawyering her in the trial will overcome her resistance.

Hey, if my folks were incinerated (I mean, other than the one who already has been and is sitting on my bookcase in a pewter urn) I'd try to get everything I could from those fat-assed corporate bastards.

Oh gimme a break so what? Like none of you whining twats would have settled?

You have a potential to say and do a lot of stupid things when you are emotionally distraught.

Ever think looking at it later on she didn't want to spend the next 10 years involved in a lawsuit?

Seriously, DIAF.

People say a lot of idealistic things when they are in shock. Reality sinks in, and a ton of money helps make the decision that much easier. Its understandable.

I saw that same 60 minutes and I thought the exact same thing. She said she wouldn't settle because it wasn't about the money.

I give her 2 years and she's going to make Anna Nicole look like a friendly schoolgirl.

Sorry Jake, didn't mean to touch a raw nerve. I'm sure somebody, somewhere loves you. Or is at least using you for something.

Maybe you can die painfully, and make someone some cash.

So its not a total loss for BP either. There just paying to educate future employees.

If some faceless corporation killed someone I loved I would extract every cent I could out of them using any means possible. Why the fark not? Losing a loved one hurts. Money can't fix that but it helps and at least you won't have to work while you deal with your grief.

I hate frivilous lawsuits but blowing people up doesn't qualify.
