Holy crap. That's...

that's breathtaking.

I particularly enjoyed the Clear Channel official saying it was the result of a "training snafu". That's one hell of a farkup, and not in the slightest bit believable as such.

If the FCC had any integrity whatsoever it would yank that lisence so fast it would make the PD's head spin. Unfotunately it won't do a damn thing because it is too busy reading 110,000 form letters from the Parents Television Council complaining about dry humping on 7th Heaven.

Uh, I don't know, if it's a training error, it's pretty dumb

If it's not, it's pretty shameful

But to link to KoS, who in turn links to Something Awful's forum is going to remove a bit of credibility to this story.

Now, it seems that this actually happened. And well, the FCC should investigate the story.

Wait, no, their own source is the SF Gate blog.

I'm still going to wait for an actual real news outlet to pick this up

Considering that this probably was broadcasted over many radio stations, I probably won't be waiting too long

2006-11-07 01:43:52 AM
I work at a radio station, and listened to the audio. It sounds like a monthly test, which gets sent out from one station, and then has to get forwarded by other stations.

Occasionally, someone messes up and accidentally sends a commercial spot as part of the audio. That's what this sounded like to me.

But I'm a Democrat, and so enjoy any opportunity to claim a massive Republican conspiracy. Let the hanging begin!

2006-11-07 02:04:10 AM
Oh, and for the record, so close to the elections, I'm going to be HIGHLY skeptical of any story on any party.

Juansmith: Mmmm... It is possible that it was just a training snafu.

I'd be willing to consider that, too. After all, it's only a one-shot chance to play an ad on competing stations, which isn't too effective unless it's a high-volume time (rush hour, etc).

On the other hand, combine this with the other dirty tricks documented elsewhere by the Republican Party, and one can be forgiven for some skepticism. It's become clear that the Republican Party knows no bounds when it comes to sabotaging this year's elections. I'm not saying anything stupid like "all Republicans are corrupt," but it's hard to deny that the current batch of Republican politicians will stop at nothing to cheat their way into office.

Oh, how long can the trusty radio intern hold out? How can he possibly resist the diabolical urge to push the button that could broadcast GOP ads? Will his tortured mind give in to its uncontrollable desires?
Can he resist the temptation to push the button that, even now, beckons him even closer? Will he succumb to the maddening urge to mass broadcast? At the MERE...PUSH...of a SINGLE...BUTTON! The beeyootiful SHINY button! The jolly CANDY-LIKE button! Will he hold out, folks? CAN he hold out?

Ok, if this WAS a training snafu:

1) Who the hell let the intern play with the actual broadcasting system if they weren't sure the person wasn't a fark up?

2) Who the hell designs a radio management system that even ALLOWS the broadcast of a commercial during an Emergency System that easily.

3) Does this mean they were playing with the Emergency System, had purposely placed a GOP add in it, and then accidentally hit the 'interrupt broadcast button'?

2006-11-07 06:28:05 AM
I have a question; something that has been bothering me for a while:

1) Why are we only hearing about all these tricks now, instead of back in 2004? It seems like this is the election that people are voting in to "throw W out of the White House", when that ship sailed two years ago.

2) Why is it that the only "scandals" we are hearing about are on the Republican side?

Well let's see- the republican response to every one of their scandals is to point to a democratic scandal. The fact that they aren't can only mean one thing- they can't find any.

I was implying that you weren't thinking. And subtly either.

Are you implying that a botched joke by Kerry wasn't turned into a "scandal"?
If that's the best the other side can do, I'm guessing they have no real scandals to point their fingers at right now.

2006-11-07 07:26:23 AM
Okay, time for me to weigh in. I have no political axe to grind here, but I think some of you MAY be misunderestimating the stupidity of off hours radio jocks. Before EAS, we used the EBS test system, which used our own cart tapes for the test tone and announcement. EAS centralized this, somewhat...But the spots/psas/bumpers are STILL set up by the jock in the booth at the station that is assigned to be the main alert station.

He/she reads a list of carts that get played in any particular break segment from a schedule, then either lines up carts (they look rather like 8 track tapes), or mouse clicks the right spots from a PC menu, much like playlisting on your home PC.

My guess is that the jock lined up the EAS spot, and lined up other spots behind it without breaking them up as SEPERATE from the EAS test. Again, you'd like to think the jock would recoqnize that the EAS tests are serious shiat, and messing them up is bad...However, having been responsible for training part timers, sometimes the best you can hope for is that they won't burn down the station playing with the coffee maker at 4am.

/Once had the station go dead for 38 minutes, because I was busy recording commercials in a production bay. DOH!
//Also possible that someone did it trying to 'help' their pet candidate...Can't imagine a politico knowing this is possible.

If you believe that, it's because you want to believe it.

1) The scandals were around in 2004 as well. You just weren't paying attention, and the republicans weren't as desperate.

2) First off, the country is very anti-GOP at the moment, so any form of voter suppression would tend to benefit the GOP. The media (e.g., Clear Channel) is vastly corporate owned, and thus would benefit the party that would likely help to deregulate them (The GOP). And the democratic demographics are more prone to intimidation tactics. I mean, if a democrat candidate want to suppress the vote, what would he do? Go over to all the rich suburban neigborhoods, and post fliers telling them that they best not vote if they used a tax loophole recently to purchase their new yatch? Go over to the Christian neighborhoods, where their preecher has violated tax exemp status for the past several months telling them that a vote for the GOP is a vote for Jesus, and hang up posters telling them that God doesn't want them to vote on Tuesday? Wouldn't work.

I was in charge of my high school radio station for several years, had a show on my college radio station, and interned at a local station for a year after that - I have never seen or heard of anyone accidentally broadcast on the EAS.

Hmm, I guess I need to watch that show more often.

Look, we all know scummy politicians come in many stripes. But the Republicans have been in complete power for a while now, they have more capacity to screw with things because they run the country (at least for the next day or so...). Hence, more Republican scandals. I also think that the current crop of (R) is particularly full of power-hungry, amoral scumbags, but you may not agree with that so I won't use it as an argument here.
