If this isn't schism worthy, I don't know what is.

Four Anglican primates from Nigeria, the West Indies, Kenya and West Africa...

To me, someone who is not Episcopalian, that sounds just a wee bit racist.

Gee, a potential schism. Last I checked Christianity (the Baskin-Robbins of the religious world) schismed so often you could set your watch to it.

It's amazing to me that some people in the Episcopal church are more worried about someone who's sincerely trying to bring God's message to the marginalized than about people like the Bishop of Philadelphia - who's protected his pedophile brother, wasted the diocese's money in totally stupid ways, and is a total heretic besides. I mean, you want to stop believing in God, fine, but you don't have any business being a bishop or a priest after you do! Admittedly, most of the priests in the diocese are trying to make him step down, but still, you'd think having bishops who don't believe in God would be a bigger deal than having bishops who want to accept gays. And if they're so anti-gay and anti-women-priests, I don't know why they don't just switch to Roman Catholic.

BTW, nice headline, except that the Archbishop of Canterbury hasn't come to a final decision, so he's not the one being attacked. He honestly seems to be pretty reasonable, but it's his job to prevent a schism, so he's kind of in a difficult position.

Whiskey on the Brain Race has nothing to do with it; the African Episcopal churches are just really conservative, especially about sex. Considering that half of Africa still thinks that sex with virgins cures AIDS, I can't say I'm surprised they think that way, but I don't see why more socially advanced countries are listening to them.

/would rather have schism than see the church give in to bigots

When the Episcopalian's schism, it's so nice it's pathetic.

This is what Archbishop Rowan has to say on it (Archbishop of Canterbury is the leader of the Anglican Church, and he has a groovy pointy hat too)

On same-sex unions:

"In a church that accepts the legitimacy of contraception, the absolute condemnation of same-sex relations of intimacy must rely either on an abstract fundamentalist deployment of a number of very ambiguous biblical texts, or on a problematic and nonscriptural theory about natural complementarity, applied narrowly and crudely to physical differentiation without regard to psychological structures."

and on the schism in general (after the Gene Robinson, Bishop of New Hampshire was invested)

"[it] will inevitably have a significant impact on the Anglican Communion throughout the world and it is too early to say what the result of that will be." He added, "t is my hope that the church in America and the rest of the Anglican Communion will have the opportunity to consider this development before significant and irrevocable decisions are made in response." [4]

You are just not going to get a lot of drama.

OK - I am the resident flaming heretic and even I think that's just nuts. How the fark can you not believe in God and be part of the clergy? Really. I'd love to know the logic that caused them to achieve that?

Ornithopter I think Whiskey . . was making a joke about the primate reference. It seemed pretty funny and racist at the same time when taken out of context. Can you have racist and funny at the same time?

female priests...ah...made me think of hicks when I saw that on the news ticker this morning.

People ask me what I think about that woman priest thing, you know. What, a woman priest? Women priests. Great, great. Now there's priests of both sexes I don't listen to. Ha, fark, I don't care. Have a hermaphrodite one. I don't farking care. Have one with three dicks and eight titties, I don't , I don't... You know, have one with gills and a trunk. That would be cool. I might go see that, you know, but... You know, I appreciate your quaint traditions and superstitions. I on the other hand am an evolved being who deals solely with the source of life, which exists in all of our hearts."

CommiePuddin: Wow, you picked the easy question.

Do you really think so? See - this intrigues me. I can follow most of the mental gymnastics my church practices (most of the time) but this one completely looses me. I know Archbishop Rowan made an argument about standing down on the gender of God (as it's academic, if it ever was a point to begin with) but, you know, denying the existence of God would kinda make all the other points, ya know....pointless?

I've heard wicked rumors about those Roman Catholic priests who think the whole thing is silly, and are actually going along for nothing more than money. It's a good rumor (especially if you're Anglican) but it just doesn't seem plausible? Like, no one is going to nark them out in the long run? Who the hell is paying for that?

Hey - it's all good to be a heretic, but there are rules. Like - if you don't believe in God, that would...you know, kinda exclude you from the argument about what God wishes, and stuff like that.

What a concept.

Episcopals are Anglicans in other countries? Learning is fun.

/schism in 4 moves

Episcopalians are Anglicans in the US. Since the Anglican Church was the state church of the nation we had recently rebelled against, we needed to give it a new name. Since it has an "episcopal" hierarchy (headed by bishops), that one stuck.

By the way, if any mods are motivated to fix the headline:

Episcopal: Adjective
Episcopalian: Noun

So the Episcoposse has done it. The first female bishop in the Anglican communion is now officially in power. Bishop Schori rocks. Before she went into theology and ministry, she completed a M.S. and a PhD in oceanography at Oregon State University, focusing on the marine biology of squids and oysters. Not only is she an Episcopal Bishop and theologian, she is also a full-fledged scientist. She is also a fully qualified pilot and fluent in Spanish. Yeaaaaah, buddy! Suck it, Christophobes! Any young women looking for a role model? I think we've got one...
