I thought the problem was the teachers hugging the students not the students hugging each other.

Makes sense in the era of the automatic knee jerk lawsuit.

"You hugged me because I'm wearing a Burka. You didn't hug me because I'm wearing a head scarf. You hugged me, but I'm not gay and don't like hugs. I'm black, I don't like hugs. You hugged me cause I'm a wheelchair bound lesbian dwarf eskimo. I'll sue."

Think of any absolutely retarded reason. And you'll find a lawsuit leeched to it.

The view of the orthodox moralist (this includes the police and the magistrates, but hardly any modern educators) on the question of sex knowledge may, I fancy, be fairly stated as follows.... There is no doubt that sexual misconduct is promoted by sexual thoughts, and that the best road to virtue is to keep the young occupied in mind and body with matters wholly unconnected with sex. They must, therefore, be told nothing whatever about sex; they must as far as possible be prevented from talking about it with each other, and grownups must pretend that there is no such topic. It is possible by these means to keep a girl in ignorance until the night of her marriage, when it is to be expected that the facts will so shock her as to produce exactly that attitude towards sex which every sound moralist considers desirable in women.

I was going to say something about how Americans prefer violence to affection, but then I realized the article was from Cornwall.

Dude, seriously. English people, cut the crap. America's got the love is bad, violence is good, thing covered.

The Church attacked the habit of the bath on the ground that everything which makes the body more attractive tends towards sin Dirt was praised and the odor of sanctity became more and more penetrating. 'The purity of the body and its garments,' said St. Paula, 'means the impurity of the soul.' ( Havelock Ellis, Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Vol. IV, p. 31.) Lice were called the pearls of God, and to be covered with them was an indispensable mark of a holy man.

I had this same problem with my 8 yr old sons principal. She called me at home because she was "concerned about his inappropriate behavior on the playground." He had hugged 2 kids at school- a boy and a girl. Both of these kids are at our house every day after school. She told me he was "displaying inappropriate behavior, especially in hugging another boy." She also asked me if I found it "odd" that he was hugging kids at school. I told her "No. I don't find it odd that he was showing affection to his friends. I do find it odd that you consider it 'inappropriate behavior' though!"

2006-11-04 10:06:11 AM
Jeez folks, you know it's only a matter of time before some parent sues the school for allowing hugs when their kid gets hugged against 'inappropriately'.

Do you not all live on the same litigation planet as I do?

You have to start young if you're going to leech all the affection and sentiment out of your boys, she was right to warn you.

/shakes head.

Sheesh Lizzie, what a nightmare. Do I want to live in a world where hugging is "inappropriate"?

2006-11-04 10:14:46 AM
I know...that conversation upset me for 2 reasons. The first was that they're teaching boys that it's wrong to show their affection/feelings for others. The second that they're really teaching kids to be homophobes.

Are the students so well behaved in England that hugging is the biggest problem there? Maybe fighting in school is just an inner city American problem, but I'm happy if we can get our kids to stop hitting each other. If we could get rid of gangs and school violence, I would let the little blessings hug all day long. Naturally, they have to be on time for class and they can't have sex in the halls. I don't see what hugging has to do with that. Furthermore, the millions of teachers who aren't pervs should be able to hug students when its appropriate too.

There is a group of young people from Leeds that periodically descend on another website I frequent. These charming examples of England's youth do not seem much different than some of the students I've seen acting stupid here in the states. How can this man think hugging is the biggest problem these students face?

Maybe this man has the special disease school administrators get where they ignore the really big problems and let the "bad" kids roam free, while cracking down on some innocent practice of the "good" kids that he doesn't like as a show of power. It's easier to discipline the "good" kids. Breaking up fights could get you caught in the crossfire. Getting between young girls hugging might be his idea of fun. Then again, it could just be that special type of blindness that the zero tolerance types promote where no teacher should ever use a judgement given the individual circumstances and no school should ever allow anything that could possibly lead to some sort of law suit, even when it's something the school should be willing to stand up and fight for.

So are they saying I can't hang out at the high schools and hug the teeny girls?

Quit projecting. The rest of the planet isn't quite as litigious as the US.

He said hugging could be deemed "inappropriate" and "victims" could be hugged against their will.

Oh noes!

While we're at it, I'm thinking we should outlaw buttsecks and liquor as well. After all, people can be buttsecksed and liquored up against their wills as well. We should also outlaw peanuts, because some people with peanut allergies might consume them against their wills as well. While we're at it, let's go ahead and forbid anything else that might benefit the absolute smallest minority of people at the expense of the overwhelming majority.

No. They are saying the teeny girls can't hug other teeny girls, because we can't teach students to use good judgement and to respect others when they say "no", so we just won't let anyone show human affection ever. Otherwise, teachers would have to pay attention to individual circumstances and make a call as to when and if they should intervene.

2006-11-04 10:50:18 AM
My high school enacted a similar policy, only it was a "no public displays of affection" rule. Granted, sex and makeout sessions don't belong on campus (though I engaged in them periodically myself), but they went all zero-intelligence on it and banned hugging. They even gave us the speech about "hugging victims". Yeah, we had trouble keeping straight faces and went right on hugging anyway. I think I belonged to the huggiest subgroup in any high school--gooths and nerds, in case anyone cares. I find it hard to take goths seriously now. I keep expecting Danny Filth to yell "Group hug!"

Anyway, when my sprogs are big enough to go to school, I'm going to do a bit of investigating to see which schools adhere to zero intelligence and which allow staff to use their judgement. Unfortunately, I doubt there's any room for judgement left.

IMHO, it'S the responsibility of the so called 'victim' to tell the so called 'abuser' that the so called 'hug' was inappropriate.

Tailed by the silent spotlights
Of Society-created paranoia
No alternative could grow
Where love cannot take root
No shadows will replace
The warmth of your contact
Love is dead in Metropolis
All contact through glove or partition
What a waste
The City -
A wasting disease.

I don't think I want to know a six-year-old who isn't a dreamer, or a sillyheart. And I sure don't want to know one who takes their student career seriously. I don't have a college degree. I don't even have a job. But I know a good kid when I see one. Because they're ALL good kids, until dried-out, brain-dead skags like you drag them down and convince them they're no good. You so much as scowl at my niece, or any other kid in this school, and I hear about it, and I'm coming looking for you! Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face! Good day to you, madam.

Aunt Crabby ...they have to be on time for class and they can't have sex in the halls...

What if they're having sex on the teacher's desk? On time for class AND not in the halls. A win win situation I'd say.

You can learn more about life from a fellow student than you will every learn from some frosty old professor who probably has a psychosexual adjustment problem. I'm in favor of hugs for lugs. hahahahahahaha
