I'm a fan of the 2nd gen ('95 to '99?) Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4's. The final 2 years blew, then they discontinued them in 2001 I think.

Gota '95 SL.. it's ok. VR4's are the bomb. Almost wiped out on the turn out of the dealership since the gimpy dealer told me to gun it.

Car has only one strike against it. Mind you, it is a very BIG strike....

it is still made by CHRYSLER!(and those German guys)
Can you say 'disposable transmissions'??

2002-07-16 09:43:05 PM
Vipers still kick ass. At least, in Gran Turismo 3.

I think they look good and move fast, and that's all that really matters, at least, if you have the $90k to throw around.

2002-07-16 09:50:38 PM
It used to be the Viper was knocked for not being refined enough. Now it's the opposite. I think it should be less refined, and have more power and be harder to drive. American cars were never about refinement, and that is the way we (I)like it.

Besides I would take a '70 Cuda over any car on the planet, Viper included. Scratch that, I would take a 318 Barracuda over anything. I just love that car.

2002-07-16 09:51:51 PM
vipers suck in Gran Turismo also...The best car(s) in my garage is the C5-R. Oh yes....

2002-07-16 09:52:39 PM

desribe "used", because i have a "used" car...and it sucks

2002-07-16 09:56:48 PM
like 80k miles maybe more

(Volvos are prob expensive to fix, but if I don't have to fix it very often, great!)

2002-07-16 09:58:31 PM
Oooh, yes, I like the new Z, Abagadro. :-) It's like a "de-chick-ified" Audi TT.

The Corvette is a wonderful car, but we already have a Corvette. The Viper was its blue-collar, slightly dangerous cousin from the wrong side of the tracks. Now, both cars play polo and wear letter jackets.

Paraphrased:

The Corvette is a wonderful car which Chevy sells thousands of per year, despite the pricetag, but we already have a Corvette. The Viper was it's blue-collar, slightly dangerous cousin from the wrong side of the tracks, which coincidentally Dodge has sold approximately 8 of since it's inception -- mostly to car stereo shops, in spite of it's image.

Vipers have always been crap. Handle like crap, resale value is crap, everyone wants to get rid of them after 3 years - why?

Now ya know.

Funny, These are the cars I always see with the hood up or on fire.

2002-07-16 10:09:42 PM

Well, my opinion of american cars is that anything after 1968 sucks eggs. Most of 'em prior to that suck, too.

If it ain't German, It's crap!

These are my two current cars.

1972 Porsche 914 at an autocross (that's tire smoke, not oil!) Mid Engine - 210hp / 1900lbs. Eats 5.0 Mustangs & Transcamaros for lunch.

and:

A 1973 VW THING - 350,000 miles and counting!

2002-07-16 10:09:58 PM
$90,000.00....okay, not a bad car but if you want a car that will truly peel the asphalt off the road and blow anything (almost) off the road for a LOT less, check the replica cars at www.superformance.com. Built from the original molds of the AC Cobra of the 60s. Fully loaded with 670 hp a Tremec shifter and ready to roll for under 50K. Well under 50K. Next year baby...next year.

another view of the Thing.....

2002-07-16 10:12:09 PM
Don't get me wrong. I would happily drive some souped up, AWD, twin turbo, euro/nippon trash. I'm sure those things are blast to zip around in, and I know they are fast as hell. I just prefer the old American stuff.

You guys are on crack.

You can not get a better car for the money.

And all the article said is that it is more for the buffy "I need the 'too fast for me to handle' car to be more luxury".

Cracker ass crackers.

I can't think of a bad Minutemen song.

I just wasn't feeling very creative when I signed up. I can see where you brain was. The Decorator.

I just put a quicktime movie up on a page that y'all should check out - can't guarantee you'll be able to view it if the server gets bogged down, but we'll see. It should autoplay as soon as it loads enough...

the rest of my site isn't functioning right now - this is all there is....

cheers & happy motoring!

I knew two people with volkswagon things, They burned. 1 with about a 74 wagon(it was just called wagon for those that don't remember) I told them it would probably burn and It caught fire. Dad owned a 76 Rabbit. Biggest piece of
Sh!t on the planet. Stayed broke and had him kicking hisself for trading a Dodge Dart conv. for it. He had a VW Bus before that. Also a lemon. Seen a couple of 914s go up in flames too. And a couple of bugs in high school. Germans. haha.

2002-07-16 10:41:55 PM
Well that article didn't tell me anything I hadn't seen at the autocross or club races. the car is nothing but a blunt object... a dodge through and through. if any of you have ever had a chance to work on a chrysler product , yes even the hemis, you already know that there design theory is on par with Peugeot and Renault. why are there so many hemi loyalists. If you don't like cheap reliability of a chevy small block that consumes less full and makes more torque, you could pony up to a big block or a Ford 427/428/429.

2002-07-16 10:45:56 PM
lloyd, those are great stories, but its sounds like thats all they are. My grandfather had an 82 rabbit turbo diesel with 350,000 on the odo that got 45 mpg and never missed a beat.ve it to my aunt and her daughter took it to 430,000 before she changed the oil in it... her maintenance method was to add oil when the oil check engine light came on.

2002-07-16 10:46:33 PM
I think VW's burn up (the aircooled ones) because people are usually to numb to maintain them properly..

Nobody I know has ever had a problem with fire outside of the combustion chamber - and I know a lot of air-suckers!!!!

Same with the 914's. Maintenance is key, and they are very reliable.

2002-07-16 10:47:31 PM
p.s. DART!?! lol, rotfl, I can't even begin torespond to that.

Well you don't have to call me a lier. It happened, get over it. Maybe you experience is different. Maybe these car get to damn hot in the south. I use to see Golfs for sell all the time with only 20,000-30,000 miles after 12 years. The only other cars so crappy were Lecars or other french makes or maybe a Fiat 1/9.

As for the dart, it ran, unlike the VW.

Another crappy german car is the Audi. I saw an A4 broke down not two weeks after they came out. The women was in front of it looking like "what the problem." You bought one of the worst cars on the planet is the problem.

No it's just a story. How could an Audi breakdown.

Never happens.

2002-07-16 11:08:33 PM
42_23 - go for an '80 or '83. In my experience those have been by far the best years ... my dad has owned like 4 280's and I currently own a '72 240.

2002-07-16 11:11:47 PM
Wugah: If it ain't German, It's crap!

If you mean that, you are very ignorant. Ferrari is the best manufacturer in the world, I know that first hand.

I just realized you have a thing and a 914? And laugh about my dad's 1965 dart conv. he had in 1976? I am Rotflmao! Haha.

Just for the record, I drove a 89 Toyota MR2 until a DUI illegal alien hit it head on.

Get one if you can. Don't break it. They are quite fun.

2002-07-16 11:25:17 PM
lloyd, I don't have a thing or a or a 914. thats Wugah. I do have a 57' sliding sunroof bug with 914 disc brakes though.
and Biznatch, people who have screen names like yours who try to make veiled remarks that allude to that fact that they might have seen a Ferrari once when they were on the Freeway, usually have no connection to the monniker what so ever... you wanna go toe to tow on Ferrari? lets go. They only started to make decent sports cars in the late 90s check out the specs on 80's stuff; about as slow as a slowstang 5.0. I will concede however that they have raised the bar these days.

2002-07-16 11:28:49 PM

BIZNATCHC:

well, the "if it ain't german, it's crap" statment is simply a modification of "If it ain't Scottish, it's Crappp!" stated by someone in some movie (of which I can't recall) perhaps Mike Myers in "So I married an Axe murderer?

Anyhow. You're right - Ferrari is a wonderful manufacturer. Nothing like a ferrari's sound and asthetic appeal.. However, when it comes to overall USEABILITY, you can't beat the German cars. Meant to be driven year round - I've had much exposure to all sorts of cars while editing Motor Trend Television for three years, plus many other shows for Speedvision Network. German cars are slightly understated (take the Audi S8 and Porsche 996's) Italian supercars are extravagent looking (and performing), but for a huge premium.

What model Ferrari do you have?

I know several friends who have or had the current style Corvette. They all think it has great performance, but they have all had several serious mechanical or electronic problems. These cars fark up if you look at them the wrong way. Out of 5 people that I know who have had the new vette, only one has not sold it. If you are rich and can afford to have another day to day car, then vettes are great, otherwise they are a pain in the ass. You better like dealer loaner cars if you own a vette.

The only Big Three vehicle I would even consider would be a Ford truck. Even so, Toyota/Lexus vehicles are still substantially better in quality, safety and resale value than anything produced by the big three.

Look at any reliable source like Consumer Reports, JD Power, Intellichoice, etc. and compare the yearly quality ratings and you will see that the vast majority of Big Three cars and trucks are below average reliabilty and quality.

You can argue all you want, but its still a fact that American cars have many more problems on average than the good Jap or Euro brands (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, BMW, Some Mercedes, Some Volvos)

To be fair, many Japanese and European car makers also make crap. Such as...

VW/Audi - Long history of problematic cars.

Some Mercedes - SLK (little tiny deathride Benz), ML series are both garbage.

Isuzu - Enough said.

New Jaguars - Ford crap disguised as a Jag, especially the X-Type/Ford Countour

Etc...

When you go out to spend $20,000 and up on a new car, you should throw away your preconceived emotional attachments to "good ol' American Cars" and do some real research about the cars you are looking at.

Don't waste your money on an unsafe and unreliable vehicle because you are too lazy to become informed about the vehicle that you will depend on for years.

Coventryblack:

I like the way you think! (and your choice of transport!)

didn't the Ferrari 308's only have just over 200hp? Heavy car, too.

LloydChristmas:

I am indeed chuckling over the DART. They are silly cars.
At least the THING lives up to it's name! Chicks dig the Thing.

VW THING: RIBBED, FOR HER PLEASURE.

2002-07-16 11:36:09 PM
Blubble: Talk about a deathride.. For Motor Trend a few years ago we tested a BRABUS modified Benz SLK. It had a 6.5 Litre Benz V8 stuffed in it. Uggh. It was limited by it's contact patch - otherwise, it quite possibly could have been in the very low 3 second range 0-60. Of course, there was a 160,000 dollar addition to the price of the car for that package.

2002-07-16 11:38:37 PM
57' sliding sunroof bug.

Wow. Those are rare and worth a good bit.
You never see any of the 65's or which ever
ones before the tail lights and bumpers changed. Everybody
around here has put them in storage long ago
for fear of some asshat will hit it. I don't think
I haven't seen but one pre 65 or is it 66 in 6 or 7 years.

I never said anything about Ferrari. They probably still don't build a decent car.

280z are nice, I'd like to get one but like the other poster said, If you can find one.
