What the hell does "Disgruntled inventor of air conditioning fumes "Right and Ford invented the automobile" mean?

2002-07-16 05:00:10 PM
worst...post... ever.

2002-07-16 05:00:38 PM
This headline makes no sense.

Sure Ford didn't invent the auto, but what does that have to do with this site?

2002-07-16 05:01:46 PM
Grizzly Adams DID have a beard.

2002-07-16 05:01:58 PM
And did he mean to say "Wright and Ford"?

My brain now hurts.

2002-07-16 05:02:05 PM
In honor of the birthday of air conditioning or whatever the hell we're celebrating---the next poster in this thread wins the prize of paying $1,700 for me to get the AC fixed in my car.

2002-07-16 05:02:38 PM
Little known fact: air conditioning was first used by the ancient Greeks.

2002-07-16 05:03:13 PM
And Lipperkowski wins!

I'll be sending you the bill. Please provide me with an address.

2002-07-16 05:03:39 PM
*sigh* i know, i know:
FLOR-I-DUH

2002-07-16 05:04:51 PM
I didn't see any fuming.

Where is the fuming.

2002-07-16 05:07:19 PM
Unless this is in reference to the previous post that claims that Willis Carrier was the inventor.

But why "fuming"?
Why "Right and Ford"?
Why was this posted?
Why am I bothering?
Why did this irritate me so much? - Probably because none of my posts have been selected and my headlines made sense.

2002-07-16 05:08:15 PM
The confusion is from (surprise!) poor punctuation. I think he meant "Right, and Ford invented the automobile."

Now do you people see why some people complain about this sort of thing? Because sometimes it will cause confusion.

2002-07-16 05:09:13 PM
Crazy girl $1700 bucks to fix an a/c in a car?? you must be crazy, girl. That mechanic is trying to take you to the cleaners, get a second opinion.

2002-07-16 05:12:06 PM
That was the second opinion. First opinion was two grand.

2002-07-16 05:14:25 PM
Common sense tells me they meant, "Right, and Ford invented the automobile. /sarcasm"

Which Ford did not. So his sarcasm was duely applied.

2002-07-16 05:14:39 PM
That sucks. Sorry to hear that.

2002-07-16 05:15:54 PM
Third opinion: You can almost get a car for that much. An new air conditioner in it's entirey shouldn't be that much, I wouldn't think.

2002-07-16 05:16:22 PM
Crazy_girl, you can put air in a car that doesn't have it for less than $1700.

To have a dealership fix it shouldn't even cost more than $900. Worst case scenario.

2002-07-16 05:17:09 PM
There was still no fuming.
I wanted fuming.

2002-07-16 05:17:10 PM
waitaminute... i'm here in god-aweful-hot-Florida, and my A/C in my house got fried. who's up for "celebrating" and giving me cash?

2002-07-16 05:19:16 PM
This is ridiculous. Everyone knows the ice cube maker was first invented by the doc in Back to the Future III.

2002-07-16 05:24:31 PM
Ijustwantaname,

You win. That super sucks.

As for my car. It really sucks. I am driving with a cheap plastic battery operated fan from Walgreens. Only $3. My car is only worth about $400 and I plan to sell it next year.

2002-07-16 05:25:17 PM
Crazy_girl: just drive with your windows down. If you're still hot, drive faster. :)

2002-07-16 05:27:40 PM
That works fine unless it's raining.

2002-07-16 05:34:50 PM
Crazy Girl: What kind of car?

zaw
2002-07-16 05:35:02 PM
fridge are better then AC, they keep beer cool.

2002-07-16 05:37:45 PM
Everyone knows the air conditioner was invented by two guys name Norm and Max. Their names are on most every air conditioner ever produced!

2002-07-16 05:37:55 PM
1994 Mazda 323

2002-07-16 05:38:47 PM
Trivia for you: the not only did Ford not invent the auto but the first American automobile company was actually the OLDSMOBILE not the ford.

+1 to Crafty's post count

2002-07-16 05:39:23 PM
My gawd...

Hell, you could buy a _muscle car with AC for $3000, and you'd go hella faster, too :)

2002-07-16 05:41:27 PM
air conditioning was first used by the ancient Greeks.

Not entirely true... they didn't actually "condition" the air (i.e. remove the moisture). They just had slaves fan the air over cool pools of water and direct into the rooms of the wealthy.

2002-07-16 05:44:24 PM
yeah but then she couldnt go zoom-zoom. Dont put $1700 bucks into a $400 car. Sweat it out, save some dough.

2002-07-16 05:47:33 PM
Yeah, I'm sweating it out. Mainly because I don't have the money and therefore not much of a choice. Besides, the delirium that comes from baking in rush hour traffic is equal to the high one might get from drugs. It's sort of a silver lining.

2002-07-16 05:49:14 PM
I Invented rust! honest.

2002-07-16 05:53:05 PM
I think the difference is that Willis Carrier (aside: bad initials to have if you are in the UK) developed commercial air conditioning--but did not invent the refrigeration cycle.
It's like the difference between inventing the transistor and developing the transistor radio.

2002-07-16 05:57:26 PM
EmJay-
Only in some cases. In other cases, they would have an "air collector" of sorts on their roof, which the wind would blow into. This pipe would travel through a fair sized pool of water and into their homes.
However, this is the extent of my knowledge on the subject (from Gr. 11 Ancient History) so if you actually know more about this, I'm not about to argue.

2002-07-16 06:05:32 PM
Typical illiterate ignorant attempt at poor humor.

2002-07-16 06:12:05 PM

I don't care... MORE BOOBIES!

2002-07-16 06:44:19 PM
Oh, and stupid people shouldn't write headlines.

ever.

2002-07-16 07:09:29 PM
Well, I guess Ford invented automobile exhaust fumes, but who invented air conditioning fumes?

2002-07-16 11:02:43 PM
Ah, but Ford DID invent the affordable automobile ... all hail the invention of the moving assembly line ...

2002-07-17 12:10:46 AM
The poor punctuation was not the problem. The irony is wasted on us because the headline had so little to do with the article. I'm with Patricula on that.

Just to further add to the inane, frustrating, off-topic confusion let me say that Edison did not invent the first incandescent light bulb, nor did he discover carbonized thread.

But probably a lot of people know it was Joseph Swan from England.

Wright brothers? ;) ;) ;)

Okay,

Maybe someone can answer this question for me... I was watching a western one day where a bartender asks a guy at the bar if he wanted ice in his drink. Then, in a later scene, there is a shot of a huge block of ice being hauled on a wagon.

Now, based on this article, I could see small-scale icemakers that could be utilized to create enough for beverages and what not. But, the really huge block seems unfeasible...

How was ice created or acquired in the "old west?"

My uncle said he recalled something about my grandfather telling him how they used to cultivate and "grow" blocks of ice in shallow holes in the ground. But, he didn't really recall any of the actual details.

Any thermodynamic engineers/refrigeration history buffs/old west re-enactors out there who can clear up these mysteries for me?

If not, no big deal... I don't think my enjoyment of Grand Theft Auto 3 will be hampered by my ignorance.

2002-07-17 11:06:59 AM
BTW, my Grandfather grew up in Tennessee, so the climate (much like in the Southwest) is pretty hot most of the year... So, it's not like they just put water out in the "freezing" cold weather. 32 degrees doesn't happen often (or for long) around there.

In any case, I've looked around on the net for some info, but haven't had any luck.
