Meh, there are players that size that have screens and are expandable. All Apple has or ever will have is good marketing.

Apple made a design decision specifically not to put a screen on the shuffle. I know when I first got mine, I thought the lack of a screen was going to be a big deal, but after using one you realize on a device of that size/capacity/intended use a screen isnt needed.

Every single thread that mentions any Apple product of any kind, I see you doing nothing but drawing devil horns on them.

And so, I'm calling you out. You made the statement, and I want you to back it up.

What product out there is that size, has a screen, and is expandable?

I'm dying to know.

Got mine via FedEx today. Pretty slick. I don't own any other Apple products, have never owned a different digital music player. This is exactly what I wanted: tiny, affordable, and designed for one thing - music.

2006-11-01 11:52:59 PM
I want a screen so that I can scroll through song titles and select the song I want, or maybe put together an impromptu playlist. Add those features and I'd buy one of these in a minute. But lacking those features I'll just stick with the equally cheap and only slightly larger competition.

The walkman isn't catching on because they don't have the marketing team of apple. Those guys are seriously amazing. The are getting people to buy an mp3 player without a farking screen! The shuffle is one of the worst mp3 players out right now and people are buying. The walkman is a much better product and not many people are buying. That's how important marketing is.

If the whiners were right, the 2nd gen shuffle wouldn't exist. If the screen really mattered for that capacity, no one would buy it.

I've had a shuffle and honestly it would be a waste.

Most people who get a shuffle only want it for working out or for kids.

The shuffle is actually more popular than the larger 30 & 80 gig iPods.

I don't watch tv, can't remember ever seeing an apple advertisement. I see the shuffle thing and can tell i'd like it. It would be like a custom radio station. IF I don't like a song I will hit next. If I really want to choose songs I'll buy a nano or regular ipod. I look at competitors, see lots of microscopic buttons and decide I don't want one due to that alone. And yes, the flat white is appealing, its a feature. It makes the thing stand out from the crap on my desk, and it makes the controls stand out as well.

You do realize we exist in a three dimensional world, right? A world where 'size' is determined by volume?

When you can make (0.41*1.07*1.62) come out to more than (1.0*1.0*1.0), you sould book a trip to Stockholm, as the Nobel people would like to have a word with you.

FTFA:

"...based on the [Apple]'s pioneering shuffle feature which lets music fans serve up a continuous mix of their favorite songs anywhere they go. Users can enjoy their songs in a random order or simply flip a switch to listen to their songs in order..."

How the fark is this a "pioneering" feature? Hasn't almost every CD and/or MP3 player included this?

No screen is fine, as long as it allows the player to be smaller and cheaper, which seems to be the case here. But I really hate it when any company claims to be the only one to release a revolutionary new feature that's old as hell.

It's like Lexus bragging about having floor mats.

hmmm.. I can see one thing that this size would be good for;

double-sided tape it behind your ear and have some really short cables earphones and it wouldn't get in the way, wouldn't get caught on them cables.

but.... then again... since you HAVE to have earphones, why not just make a headset with a mp3 player built-in?... but don't other companies do that already?

/not bashing, just wondering and making a suggestion.

Since the Apple bashers are unusually misinformed today, here's some pictures and facts.

iPod Shuffle:
ec1.images-amazon.com

You could easily clip it to your hat. It plays in two modes: straight through, and shuffle, and you can skip tracks. It's simple, and it works really really well. It's under $100.

iPod nano:
images.apple.com

This one has a screen that's big enough to read, it shows photos, and it stores a lot of music. It's under $200.

I am amused that when people criticize Apple's computers, the #1 complaint they have is that Apple doesn't sell ultra-cheap boxes that don't have any bells or whistles. But when Apple turns around and sells an ultra-cheap MP3 player that does not have a screen, the Apple bashers are upset.

Not that it's important. Apple sells millions of computers and iPods per year. In fact, other than the bashers here, pretty much everyone loves Apple products. Naturally, this must be a conspiracy, or some kind of marketing brainwashing, because "everyone knows that Apple products are overpriced crap, and you can get a MUCH BETTER product from Creative for $11.95."

Of course, none of the Creative players have a scroll wheel. But apparently the same people who won't buy a Mac because "it only has a one button mouse" are perfectly happy to buy an MP3 player with no scroll wheel.

mistergecko: I don't watch tv, can't remember ever seeing an apple advertisement.

No, but you have heard of it. Most people haven't heard of anything besides an iPod. Most people think mp3 players are called ipods. That is why they sell. No one knows any better. If you just love that the shuffle doesn't have a screen you can easily add that 'feature' to any mp3 player with a little tape.

2006-11-02 01:33:55 PM
I'm terrible at keeping things. I'd lose it. I'll stick with my CD-Walkman believe it or not, Burned CD's are super cheap and my walkman plays mp3's. Not to mention if I lose it, or break it, or it's stolen from me (Not likely because people apparently hate CD-walkman's) I'm only out 14 bucks.

2006-11-02 01:44:25 PM
Well then its not for you is it coral..

Thats ok.. I still use a circa 1989 "cell" phone.. its awesome.. and I will never loose it because its HUGE... and apparently people hate cell phones that have a cord to the main box.

As an Apple basher myself, one of my problems with their line of products is that they'll add or remove a simple, simple feature, market the hell out of it, and sell a new product because of a single, miniscule change.

Like, when the original Shuffle came out, they were acting like a random feature on the playlist was the biggest thing ever to come to an MP3 player. They went on to say in their pushing of the product that the lack of the screen and random feature adds excitement to your life and unpredictability is so amazing. If I wanted that, I'd just get a normal MP3 player, turn on random playlist, and not look at the screen. Buying a second MP3 player is not needed to add excitement to my life. That's my take on it, anyway.

/Likes clicky buttons over the scroll wheel, too
//That new Shuffle is too small

LaBlueSkuld one of my problems with their line of products is that they'll add or remove a simple, simple feature, market the hell out of it, and sell a new product because of a single, miniscule change

What Apple did was make a new product, another kind of iPod. It stores fewer songs, and doesn't have a screen, but on the other hand, it's half the price, much smaller and easier to carry. They decided to tout the "random" feature because people really liked that, and in a no-screen environment, the random feature is pretty important.

If you put a few hundred songs you like into a Shuffle, it's like a private radio station -- you don't know what's going to play next, but you're pretty sure you'll like it. Since iPod fans love the random feature, and had been calling it "the iPod Shuffle" -- well, the whole thing makes a lot of sense.

So sure, you can hate the products because they are over-marketed, over-hyped, but you can hardly blame them from doing marketing.

Be all that as it may, however, Apple deserves a ton of credit for making the entire "digital music revolution" happen by forcing record companies to agree to "less bad" rights management, reasonable prices, and uniform terms. The record companies are not all that happy that they can't have different prices and different digital rights on a per-artist basis.

The movie industry is being much more careful. They honestly believe that consumers should pay more for additional "features" like chapter menus and fast-forward. (Imagine if you could watch a movie for $1.99, but once you hit play, you couldn't watch it again, pause, fast forward, skip commercials, or rewind.)

The music and movie industries want all the control to themselves. Microsoft is happy to oblige, as long as they get paid.

2006-11-02 07:51:07 PM
LaBlueSkuldOh, and I don't think the intention was to have 11 different iPods. Some whacknuts are THAT into it, but for most people, it's "get an iPod, be happy until it disappears or dies." Most of us can live without video playback on a 2 inch screen.

Then again, Apple's selling millions of videos, so somebody likes 'em.

2006-11-02 11:36:36 PM
Arnold T Pants: If you just love that the shuffle doesn't have a screen you can easily add that 'feature' to any mp3 player with a little tape.

No, I consider having no screen in the first place a more complete implementation of the "no screen" feature than covering one up with tape. If it has a screen, there's bound to be basic functionality that requires the screen and/or adds complexity to the device. Ok, well that and I'd rather use iTunes than the other programs, if I were to tie myself to one program (which I do, because that keeps it all consistent and registers playing stats).

The shuffle is one of the worst mp3 players out right now and people are buying.

Hardly. I have the older 'gum-stick' shuffle on the lanyard. I turn it on and push play and that's it. I don't have to sit there and stare at a tiny screen and hit next or forward and navigate to some song when there's only 130 songs on the thing. I do the picking and choosing the music when I load it on there in iTunes. I take it everywhere with me.

The walkman is a much better product and not many people are buying. That's how important marketing is.

Yeah sure, people just buy the little shuffle to look cool. It doesn't even need to work well, hell it doesn't even need to play music as long as my friends see me wearing it.

Maybe people don't like the walkmans?

2006-11-05 07:06:14 PM
BTW for the last farking time if you want a screen buy a goddamn Nano. That's why there are 3 different types of iPods.

Some people, such as myself, are smart enough to load the 100 or so songs I want to hear on the shuffle before I walk away from the computer. That way I don't need to sit there and fiddle with a screen pressing the next button all day. Shuffles aren't meant to carry your whole music collection with you. They're meant to take your current playlist with you.
