Loki009: How do we book the rooms?

I'll be talking to the Hotel again this week. I wanna try to get a firm guesstimate of numbers as to get a better rate if possible.

Where is the nearest airport served by American Airlines?

2006-10-30 04:01:27 PM
That's that place I fly over on the way to Amsterdam, right?

z_gringo: Where is the nearest airport served by American Airlines?

according to their website, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

2006-10-30 04:04:53 PM
Ok, here is a question, how the fark do i get there? I have been to Nova scotia a few times so i can get that far, what do i do from there?

2006-10-30 04:08:47 PM
I've always wanted to visit Newfie in winters, though not summer...

North Sydney, Nova Scotia. From there you can take the ferry to either Port aux Basques, or Argentia. Argentia is much closer to St. John's. But if you want to take a nice scenic drive, I recommend Port aux Basques. You will see most of the island that way.

Something tells me by time i drive from CT to northern Nova Scotia most of my desire to travel anything labeled a scenic drive will be just about drained from my body.

2006-10-30 04:19:27 PM
Argentia is about an hour and change from St. John's. Port aux Basques is at least a 10 hour drive.

2006-10-30 04:23:58 PM
Port aux Basques...no gays, right?

2006-10-30 04:24:16 PM
Yes b'y!!

I'm going home next summer, but I'm not sure when. I might have to swing it to be late July!

2006-10-30 04:25:41 PM
Argentia is about an hour and change from St. John's. Port aux Basques is at least a 10 hour drive.

The ferry from Sydney takes 6-7 hours to get to Port aux Basques, 12-14 hours to get to Argentia. Factor this in. No matter how you slice it, you're looking at a 16-18 hour day to get from Cape Breton to St. John's by ferry. The ferry's pretty nice, though, as is the drive from either PaB or Argentia.

2006-10-30 04:27:33 PM
JJ Money: Port aux Basques...no gays, right?

Don't worry, we'll find a gay bar for you in St. John's.. I'm guessing that they have one.

El_Swino: No matter how you slice it, you're looking at a 16-18 hour day to get from Cape Breton to St. John's by ferry.

They have night crossings, and you can get a cabin.

Solid, I knew I need more of an excuse to visit family than "George Street Festival".

Now I can go without feeling guilty.

2006-10-30 08:04:26 PM
newfie,

I will try to come! I will! ;)

2006-10-31 01:41:49 AM
European Farkers, there is talk that there will be direct flights from London to St. John's, by the time of the party.

2006-10-31 01:52:05 AM
Question, If I was to book a vacation around this, does newfoundland have enough to keep a solo traveler entertained?

AuralArgument: Question, If I was to book a vacation around this, does newfoundland have enough to keep a solo traveler entertained?

Quit a bit.. I have a bunch of links on the websites.

Newfoundland is an awesome place to visit, even with the drive from California. The ferry is quite nice too. Plan to take it at night though and catch some sleep. The drive up to L'Anse aux Meadows is well worth it too.

2006-10-31 02:04:37 AM
For a second there, I thought you were going to be having a Newfoundlanders' party in Alberta.

2006-10-31 02:37:02 AM
Oh Oh Oh are you guys gonna beat up a kid while video taping it, then show it to him while you beat him up some more?

/sorry, but I never get to post in these threads. San Diego is too big.

2006-10-31 02:54:54 AM
I heard the St. Bernard party is gonna be twice as big.

2006-10-31 02:59:45 AM
Go to Gros Morne!

2006-10-31 03:31:06 AM
I believe there are direct flights from Hartford to Gander.

2006-10-31 03:38:56 AM
Things just ain't been the same in Newfoundland since the new Prime Minster outlawed sodomy.

But you know, French Canada is the best Canada in the land, and the other Canada is a bullshiat Canada, if you lived here for a day you'd understand.

/not obscure at all, but it's still an hilarious episode

2006-10-31 05:56:33 AM
There's an airport in St. John's. 15 minutes from downtown, which is 30+ bars within a 15 minute walk.

I know it well.

2006-10-31 05:58:07 AM
Geez, you're gonna Screech in everyone who shows? If you're buying, I might just show up :)

/from that other island a bit south of you
//sorry the link don't reach that far

2006-10-31 06:14:48 AM
Oh dear. This is the week before St. Johns Regatta, right?
My brothers and me have wanted to see it for ages... The sad thing is that my boyfriend probably isn't too keen on another holiday spent sailing or watching it.

Anyway, nfkiller thank you so much for the info about the London flight connection and all your work! I'll check out your links later.

2006-10-31 06:43:36 AM
Damn. That's 4 days after I'm moving back to Halifax from St John's, and I can't get back for the party :(

To anyone going who's not been to Newfieland before: Don't take the ferry from North Sydney. Fly here and rent a car. You'll shave about 20 hours off your travel time MINIMUM - that's time which can be used for drinking on George St.

Yes, the scenery is beautiful, but you can rent a car once you get here and see as much as you like.

2006-10-31 06:53:42 AM
Bugger off, Gortex, we need the tourist bucks too! lol

I think it's worth the detour if only to see at least part of the Cabot Trail. Make a weekend of the commute, see some sights, then go get drunk with some fellow farkers. :)

I live in between Sydney and North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and I can see the terminal for the ferry to Newfoundland from my window. If any farkers are interested I can give very detailed instructions on how to get there the easiest and fastest way possible, with a visual on google maps.

2006-10-31 06:57:19 AM
Oh, and Farkers taking the route through Nova Scotia and plan on taking the ferry, please give me a shout on gmail.

I'll be there. I mean here. As for "is there enough to do?": Oh heavens yes. You will have a good time here if you manage to connect with some people here, which is pretty easy if you leave you pretension at home. But if you're heading here for something like this, you'll only have a shiatty time if you look for it. Or if you leave belongings in your rented car and it gets broken into. Look out for that. C'est une bummeur. And speaking of gay bars, there's one "gay" gay bar, but really no one pays much mind anywhere.
George Street: The mall of bars. This is a fun place to visit but ya wouldn't wanna live there. There's lots of other bars off George, and still in the area that are quieter and worth getting obliterated in, so be sure to go for a walk.
Off the top 'o my head:
The Ship Pub: formerly Ship Inn - live music/dive/artsy/good beer on tap
Bar None/The Spur: dive/dive/dive. Weird, but never violent (anymore)
I'll do some more of this later when I have time.

2006-10-31 07:56:58 AM
Hmmmm, I better make reservations now that I'm sober. If I try after 10 am I might end up in St. Johns, US Virgin Islands

OK, that makes 4 PEIers I know of on Fark.

I'm in as I live in St.John's anyways. And George Street Fest is a blast. Loads of bars and one cover...you can even drink on the street during the festival. Its like one really big bar. Good times, good times.

And if you're coming to St. John's you have to go to Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America.

2006-10-31 11:39:20 AM
Wish I lived on the East Coast. I'd like to see St John's. Lots of good Trad music there?

2006-10-31 12:24:01 PM
I live in St. John's, so how can I NOT go?

Damn, am I the only loud Newf on Fark? I've never seen some of you... I think we're gonna surprise a lot of people with this party, and they're gonna want to come back.

Click the link at the top of the page if you'd like to sign up for the googlegroup.
