I bet #1 is "Never upgrade anything, including your server bandwidth."

Haha. Same here.

Slashdotted. Here is the list (from Slashdot):

1) The new theme is too bulky, inconsistent on different platforms, and inferior to the highly refined and very user friendly theme of 1.5 (this is despite late efforts by Mozilla to spruce up the icon set and improve consistency)

2) Antiphishing technology is both weak (blacklist based) and a potential privacy problem. The privacy issues are raised because Firefox 2.0 Antiphishing Features employ an engine previously released by Google, which has been shown to potentially cause privacy risks.

3) The new Options dialog box is confusing, poorly designed, and illogically hides important features

4) There are many reported compatibility issues with the large existing libraries of extensions, themes, and plugins currently avaialble for earlier versions of Firefox. While this can, to some degree, be expected, the loss of this huge user contributed extension base is a non-trivial problem with Firefox 2.0, and could be a deal breaker for some people all by itself

5) The well known memory leak issue, which causes the Firefox browser to consume ever increasing amounts of RAM, eventually leading to sluggish performance and crashes, has been carried over into yet another generation. This is despite an enormous amount of public commentary and user requests for resolution prior to release of a new version of Firefox

6) There are reported problems with the CSS engine in Firefox 2.0, affecting various websites, and making certain features unavailable to surfers. Notable among these is a continued problem with certain aspects of Yahoo! mail

7) Reports indicate that episodes of random freezing during use are worse with the 2.0 version, though a cause has not yet been isolated

8) Numerous users have reported that the History bar is buggy, and that in some instances - for unknown reasons - will not display recent items when the history menu is opened as a side panel

9) RSS feed handling has taken a step backwards, and is inferior to that of IE7.

Huh...of the ones that affect me, the theme looks almost the same as the previous one to me, the options dialog has *always* hidden important features for whatever reason, all of my extensions continue to work, memory issues seem better for me now (though they were never a problem before), haven't had a problem with Yahoo Mail Beta, and no freezes.

So far, Firefox 2 has been absolutely flawless for me..go fig.

2006-10-29 11:11:41 AM
Yeah, I'm lovin' 2.0. My only complaint is a small one, and that is that the folks who do the Well-rounded extension haven't updated it yet. Like I said, a small complaint, and even that has nothing to do with Mozilla.

I love Firefox but the memory leak issue is a pain in the ass. If I leave it open for more than 3 or 4 days it eats a good 500MB of RAM.

I never upgrade Firefox right away because I want to make sure I'll have access to my extensions. I usually wait two weeks. By that time most of the extensions are updated.

I love Firefox except for the memory leak. Why must it take 189,986K when I have ONE page open?

Uncle Karl: I love Firefox but the memory leak issue is a pain in the ass. If I leave it open for more than 3 or 4 days it eats a good 500MB of RAM.

I see I was being nice in my post. I do remember times when it goes beyond 300,000 K.

Why?

Too late

I don't like the new theme. It just seems like they put in a lot of work to make it worse than 1.5. I don't get it.

Other than that, everything is working well.

BTW, how is the IE7 upgrade supposed to happen if I have auto-update turned on? When can I expect it to show up on my computer?

What happened to the "find next" button when searching for text within a page?

Basically it will not give up memory it is not using anymore. That is what a memory leak essentially is.

/basically someone goofed up somewhere, since the project is fairly large that to some degree can be expected

Here are some common problems I've had, and others have had with FF 2.0, and I've included the fixes:

1) If you have windows and used FF 1.5.0.7/8, you might lose your bookmarks. Just make sure you delete you old FF, then delete FF 2.0 and reinstall - bookmarks reappear.

2) Although you've chosen new links (like clicking on a news item on fark) to be in a new tab, they always create a new window. This took me awhile to fix, but you can go to about:config and change "loadonnewtab" to a 0.

3) the quick find feature no longer has "find next" or "previous", you have to hit ctrl-f to get those.

4) My favorite extension, autofill, doesn't work, so I hacked the install file and changed the "maxversion" to 2.0 upon installation.

Benefit: Spell-check on by default in the forms could make FARK a lot easier to bear.

2006-10-29 12:11:35 PM
BTW, I hated the memory leak thing, and this version seems to fix it - I used it all day with a lot of tabs, and never went over about 70k in memory, which is acceptable for me. Used to got in the upper 100k's.

Like my other software I'm going to wait a while until they sort out compatibility and other issues before switching.

Just use the f3 button, or if you must have something to click on, use crtl+f to bring up the old search field.

i'm gonna wait. since the IS know nothings at work farked my profile i'm using portable firefox it works well for me and i can store an active copy in my gmail

The thing I noticed wasn't fixed was that when I bring up videos on some pages, like break.com, and accidentally scroll while video is playing the video will disappear, only to reappear after a bit more scrolling. For a while I thought it was just me, but I'm on a brand new pc and it still does it. So that's annoying. Happened with 1.5 too.

The house icon to go to my home page looks friendlier though, so I'm happy. I want to live there.

2006-10-29 12:14:36 PM
Uncle Karl: just use the f3 button, or if you must have something to click on, use crtl+f to bring up the old search field.

I'm using ctrl-g now. I have the "begin searching when I start typing" turned on, and I guess I got used to clicking the "Find Next" button in that box.

Still not ACID2-compliant. For Windows, only Opera 9 is.

Opera 9 is faster, uses way less memory, has better tab handling (complete with thumbnails of the tabbed pages that appear along with a text summary of the page whenever you hover the mouse over a non-foreground tab: not quite as cool nor useful as IE7's Exposé ripoff, but more informative and way better than FF2 or any extension that I know of that's available for FF, including Foxposé [dog slow if you have more than a few tabs open]), is available for more platforms, and is more standards-compliant. And, it has its own extensions system available (called Widgets). And it's free.

2006-10-29 12:15:34 PM
What is this memory leak you speak of. And what is occuring?

2006-10-29 12:15:39 PM
Only thing that bothers me about the new theme is the tab bar... it looks Mac-ish. Yuck.

Also agree that they needlessly messed with the Options menu.

10) fox news endorses it?

Yes, that was the final straw. Because I base my browser choices on partisian American politics.

I agree. I can understand some of them though. And frankly, I find what the folks at Mozilla are doing a little perplexing as well. I always thought the whole point of having an extension system in the first place was that you could add modules, as you go along (ie. when you need them) and not bother with the stuff you don't need.

Now, FF2.0 is great (aside from being a farking memory hog and in that regard, way worse than 1.5 and even RC2) and all. But why the hell did they have to go and integrate all these features into the browser and do a worse job than the original extensions' authors.

Case in point: the spellcheck feature. Yeah, it's nice but you can only have one dictionary at a time selected and it's a PITA to manage it. I kind of need different dictionaries though (ie. IT terms and abbreviations, legal terms and so on, that I don't want showing up all the time when I'm on Fark). Spellbound seemed more polished, as well.

Same thing with Sessionsaver. Yeah, I can close FF and have it reopen my old session but I can't save a bunch of different sessions. It also sometimes seems to fark up status data (ie. forms, etc.), which Sessionsaver handled just fine.

"3) the quick find feature no longer has "find next" or "previous", you have to hit ctrl-f to get those."

I love my keyboard shortcuts, so here they are to share with you. To start the "Find" function, hit the Slash key on the keyboard "/" then start typing away. Once a word is highlighted hit "F3" to find the next word, or Shift + F3 to find the previous word. A lot quicker it seems to me.

Leave it open for a few days with 20-30 tabs and it will eat hundreds of Megs of ram at an ever increasing rate until it dies or the PC must be rebooted.

/This issue has existed since it was called Phoenix

I tried 2.0 for a while, and it made my computer slow as shiat. It would stutter and lag when I tried to scroll down a page.

10. Microsoft's Java virtual machine doesn't work in it, so you would need to download some bloated, phoning-home Sun shiat to use a Java applet.

Rule #1: Never upgrade to x.0 of anything. Evar.

Rule #2: If possible, never upgrade to x.01 or x.011, etc. of anything; it is best to wait for x.2

2006-10-29 12:27:30 PM
Already upgraded, works better. I never had the inclination nor time to spend loading up my browser with a bazillion plug-ins and add-ons.

2006-10-29 12:27:39 PM
COMALite J: And, it has its own extensions system available (called Widgets).

The lack of Fark widgets, and presence of Fark Firefox extensions, are among the few reaons I haven't switched to Opera.

Sad to see that FF is suffering from feature creep as well.

enecks: What happened to the "find next" button when searching for text within a page?

As others have already pointed out, it's available through CTRL+F, which kind of kills "find as you type", unless you install the FAYT extension.

swahnhennessy: I'm trying to think why anyone would need to leave their browser on for days at a time.

It is rather ponderous...

I still use 1.0.7 at home. Versions after that removed one crucial feature that I liked too much: The ability to go through the cookies list interactively -- deleting cookies and banning the site from ever sending a cookie again. I know you can still do that in the next page, but its not interactibe, you have to remember the page. If someone writes a plug-in to do that, then I'll upgrade.

2006-10-29 12:37:07 PM
Yeah, but when is the new Camino coming out?
