(AZCentral)   Number of speeders doubles one day after speed cameras are turned off on an Arizona freeway, including the genius clocked at 139 mph. Obvious tag puts the pedal to the metal and wants you to get the hell out of the left lane   (azcentral.com) divider line 171

Wanted for questioning.

2006-10-26 10:01:36 AM
"Number of Speeders" refers to people going 76mph or over. Not exactly an unsafe speed (excluding the 139mph wacko).

Notice the article didn't say there were any increased accidents that day - just more people going fast.

2006-10-26 10:15:13 AM
What's with all the derision of the 139 mph guy? Do we know what time of day it was? I've driven the 101, and in the middle of the night in the right car, I think you could potentially be safe at 139.

You people are all a bunch of pinkos. This used to be a free country once.

Aren't speed limits "supposed" to be the in the 85th percentile of speed that traffic normally moves without artificial restriction? If so, that just means the limit is artificially low.

2006-10-26 10:25:11 AM
It just proves that speed cameras impede commerce.

/300M handles 140 just fine thanks

I've never heard of that before? Source?

While it would make sense, its a local money-making scheme law- and those laws are generally not written from any form of common sense.

From TFA:

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says it will not add patrols to Scottsdale's strip of the Loop 101... The agency considers adding patrols where statistics show an increase in DUI-related incidents, collisions or complaints about aggressive driving, he said.

Well, for once they're honest.

Speeding doesn't increase accidents.

2006-10-26 11:36:11 AM
The funny part is the guy going 139 was doing it on a Segway.

2006-10-26 11:44:06 AM
The ability of people to drive with a speed limit frightens me when I consider their ability to drive without a speed limit.

2006-10-26 11:47:08 AM
139? Wow... wonder if it was a bike...

Well, I'm off to Loop 101 in AZ, see ya later.

139 eh?

I'm still waiting for my "Keep the HELL out of France!" letter after I took my car over there a couple of months ago and put it through its paces. I got to one mile per hour faster than that guy before the speed limiter kicked in :(

Can't fly on a plane without getting treated like a criminal.

Can't drive on the highways because of all the asshats who think they'll win if they beat me there.

Guess that leaves me trains and backroads. No problemo.

2006-10-26 11:48:35 AM
I fear more generally their ability to drive at any speed.

140 on a bike looks damned scary. Never again.

Rented a car there once.

Wow, the comments thread on TFA is quite bitter. Condensed down, the blame belongs to:

Mexicans
Rich Scottsdale people on cel phones
Snowbirds
The legislature
Scottsdale
The cameras
The lack of cameras
Bill Clinton

I love the 101. Everyone is fine doing 80+ untill the pace car(with the little red and blue light strip)shows up. Just get the mossbacks, the landscaper trucks, and the 18 wheelers to stay in the middle and right lanes and everything is just fine.

2006-10-26 11:51:39 AM
is it too much to ask that if you want to drive at extreme speeds, do it somewhere on a real race course and not a public road?

I dont care if you kill yourself, but hurting someone else just proves you are a selfish dipshiat.

I need to sleep. Someone please tell me filth was being sarcastic.

Can't ride on a train because a drunk will jump in front of it

Can't drive the backroads cuz a kid will jump in front of you

1) Set speed limit lower than anyone drives
2) Set up camera
3) Profit

HAAHAHAHAHAAAA

(unless you're trolling, in which case, well done)

There is a speed limit. If you blow the speed limit by 50% or so, the govt is forced to tighten up on you. Then you complain about the tightening up and call the govt "pinko".

You don't get to decide what's a "safe" speed. If you want to decide the speed limit, get into government. 'Til then, STFU and stick to the limit or a reasonable bracket around it.

Well, it appears there it is. On the east (DC suburbs anyway) the game is
1) Set speed limit on the two major 8-16 lane highways going in to DC at 55.
2) Post police every other exit.
3) Profit like all hell.

I took the 101 from Guadalupe to Frank Lloyd-Wright,about twenty files, every day for over two years. So, fourty miles a day on it. The only times I saw accidents on it were during high traffic times, around the junction to the 202. Traffic would pretty much stop dead. Then someone would eventually run into someone else, at a slow speed. Minor fender-bender stuff, mostly. Then there was the time a dump truck used the median to flip it on it's side, spilling dirt all over the highway.

2006-10-26 12:06:48 PM
From TFA's comments:

"That is the problem with people like Mo, they are so jealous of us Scottsdale people. The reason why they don't put cameras where you live is because people can't afford to pay fines. If us spoiled Scottsdale people get a ticket we pay, the cameras should go up, but they should also go up on the West side too. That way when you cannot afford to pay your ticket you can wear pink underwear [in jail]"-Kathleen9740

Spoken like a true Scottsdale resident. If this were Fark I'd say she's trolling, but I've dealt with enough people from there to know that this is probably the way she really thinks.

are you kidding me, just take it to a racetrack where your souped up Honda Civic will be blown off the track by real racers. Stop putting other folks at risk for your stupid behavior. Grow the fark up, or just kill yourself now. Darwin is waiting for you.

enecks if you cant handle the privledge of driving, then take the bus.

I dont care if folks want to go fast, but doing it on a public road is not right and you know its not right, either. Stop justifying your self-centered lives and get over yourselves. Oh, and just hurry up and die really soon, mmk?

TheSignPost: There is a speed limit. If you blow the speed limit by 50% or so, the govt is forced to tighten up on you. Then you complain about the tightening up and call the govt "pinko".

What if nearly everyone went nearly the same amount over? Most people loaf along at around eighty-eighty-fivish. Shouldn't the government raise the speed limit at that point?

2006-10-26 12:13:12 PM
All this shows is that people are now speeding WHERE THE CAMERAS ARE. Before, they used to slow down near the cameras because everyone who isn't a tourist knows where the cameras are. The game is:

-traffic moves along at 75, everything is cool. Unless it's rush hour, then you're lucky to do 35.

-You get near a camera (there are three northbound, three southbound), you slow down to 65, just to be safe, and wave at the camera.

-You get past the camera, resume normal speed.

This data proves nothing other than drivers are keeping up with the news about when the cameras are being turned off, and that they know where the cameras are.

Get rid of the cameras, hire real cops who can use their judgement and truly catch the asshats.

Sonata, agreed.
That's one of the best stretches of the 101 to fly on when it's clear, IMO. And I'm moving to PV next month. ROCK.

Too bad everyone still does 45mph on the 51. My commute is going to suck.

2006-10-26 12:19:42 PM
That's bullshiat. The cameras ended just before the 90th and Pima exit on 101 and right after that little S turn, people would floor it since the cameras were behind them.

Of course during rush hour, that's right where traffic comes to a dead stop and only picks up to a crawl all the farking way down to 202.

The main problem with drivers in Phoenix is that almost NOBODY is -from- Phoenix. We're all transplants. So you got a dozens and dozens of different driving styles and speeds from one car to the next. Snowbird season comes and jesus h. farking christ does it get nutty here.

My opinion for the record is that the NY snowbirds are the worst. They come down here and drive like total farking asshats.

The speed cameras were just a money making scheme. I'd set my cruise control for 75mph and coast through the 8mi stretch, then floor it right after I passed it just like everyone else.

Souped up Civics are cool! Some kid tried to sell me his '04 Si the other day at the 7-11. It had the Jackson Racing supercharger, and I really wanted it bad, but then I got this eerie premonition of my own death once my wife figured out that I bought another car.

Anyway, I'm guessing that you're not really a car person. That's OK; it's a free country. But let me tell you a story: This morning I drove to work at about 95 mph. You know who got hurt? No one. A dude passed me on a Honda sport bike, and I thought to myself that I would never ride a bike in traffic and definitely not at that speed. Because it's dangerous and irresponsible, of course. But you know who got hurt? No one. In fact, the only negative words I've heard about such behavior came exclusively from the internet sooper geniuses in this thread with their braying Puritanical pontificating. Stop trying to suck all the fun out of driving, pinko. Your cheeks must be tired from all that sucking.

WhiskeyBoy

Exactly! DC/MD farker here and I can relate. So traffic
moves well at around 65mph. The limit is 55 so you have
idtiots that are either going the limit or 5 miles under.
These idiots are often in the passing lane. There are more
taffic jams/slowdowns due to people trying to do the limit
then there are accidents.

What's even better is when the cops pull someone over for
speeding causing a huge rubber necking traffic jam which
often results in another accident. Everyone get punished
because the cops want the profit from an idiot going 20 mph
over. . .

I dont care if folks want to go fast, but doing it on a public road is not right and you know its not right, either. Stop justifying your self-centered lives and get over yourselves. Oh, and just hurry up and die really soon, mmk?

Mrs. Kiljoy, common sense tells us that nowadays people go faster than the speed limits allow. On average. Get with the times. If YOU want to justify going 55 on the fast lane because "its the law!", then don't biatch that the 20 or so people behind you are honking their horns. I'm sure theres some underlying psychological reason for your hatred of speeders, but don't take it out on people who just want to get where they want to go. Oh, and nice to hear you dismount your moral high horse with a comment like "I hope you all die". Reeeaal nice.

You're not really that stupid, are you?

The fact that it's never happened to you doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.

And stop calling people "pinko", that sh*t was tired before the end of the Cold War. And it makes you look ignorant.

A couple summers ago we were on guy's golf trip to Scottsdale. One morning, our buddy who rented the group car, was too hung over to make that day's golf, so we all take the car and speed across Frank Lloyd Wright blvd - woops was that a camera enforced speed trap we just passed? - oh well. A few weeks after we get home, said hung over guy gets ticket in the mail w/ nice photo of our buddy driving the car - HAHA.

Bah, elffster took all the flame out of me, but I'd like to add that filth apparently IS the other end of the idiot spectrum. Theres a driving speed the law thinks is safe and a driving speed you think is safe, but theres such thing as a middle ground.
