FLMountainMan --

I doubt you're a Christian if you say "suck it, atheists" -- doesn't that seem a bit contradictory?

An enlightened person will tell you they don't know the answers to such questions.

You are correct that if I believed something that had no witnesses it would be blind faith. For instance if I believed that a purple fairy that I'd never seen made the sun rise, and tried to convince you of the same thing with no evidence at all you'd rightly be skeptical.

Christianity is the the only religion that relies on history, eye-witnesses, and facts to considered true. Faith is trusting God's promises, not blindly accepting invisible things. It's like a child who believes that a parent will pick them up from school in the afternoon because the parent has done so every day in the past. In fact the rational thing to do is believe the parent will arrive. The irrational thing to believe is that suddenly the parent doesn't exist or won't show up as promised.

Finally, indisputable proof..Don't I feel silly!

There are Christians in Darfur?

I'll have to do a little research.

DocsInOKC: You're right. We do. I go to church, I try to be good to everyone, I avoid wearing my religion on my sleeve and I try to be a good person and yet, I get grouped with these people.

didn't you just say that subby was an asshole? is that being good to everyone or being a good person? you get grouped where you belong for a reason, deal with it.

oh yeah, i think thats a relgion on your sleeve. you might wanna go check that.

I don't preach to you, don't preach to me

right. of course. the christian that doesn't preach. tell me another one.

Can't we still blame Zeus for storm damage? There's as much proof for him as all the other gods that man has made up. Why does everyone have to pick on this Imaginary Friend?

Holy moly! The searing BLAST of vitriolic sarcasm that hit me in the face when I opened up this thread was hot enough to melt bone. I don't even remember what I wanted to say.

And really people that point out these signs do so much more harm than good. What kind of prideful idiot really feels that G-d dropped some logs on a nearby statue to tell her "Hey, keep up the good work!"?
What solidified my faith was haning out with older Christians who were quietly devoted and led by example. That people could, through their faith, be so great and yet so humble through good and bad times really impressed me. My fellow idiot youth counselors holding Bible verse quoting contests did not.

Yes, I'm sure the God that brought down the walls of Jericho, stopped the sun for King Hezekiah, and parted the Red Sea decided to do this as a encore.

I'm pretty sure if God wanted a tree to get your attention, it would uproot itself and do the Cha Cha.

Why do you think the Bush administration loves these people and actively peruses their votes? Because these people will believe anything!

2006-10-20 03:13:07 PM
Pincy: No, but believing that Jesus was born of a virgin and then died and came back to earth as a ghost does make you more stupid than someone who doesn't believe such nonsense.

Why? Because it is not possible? I think you are missing the point of what God is in this equation. It isn't explained as cool editing and green screens, or via a medical textbook.

There will never be a good Christian after Christ.

Please enlighten me with more than pictures. If you don't agree with the facts presented in the NT, don't think they happened, or think that somebody lied, fine. That doesn't change that Christianity MUST rely on history. If Jesus didn't live or come back from the dead the whole religion is gone in an instant.

junkevil - none of the individuals I referenced have ever turned out to be child molesters. Furthermore, if you feel that all devout Christians, and only devout Christians are child molesters, you a) have a very warped perception of what I meant by "devout Christians" and b) are extremely naive and ill-informed.

Why does that require belief in magical powers from Jesus, Zeus, or Santa? Can't you exhibit humility and other virtues on your own? If Jesus was just a man who had some good ideas about how to treat your fellow man, isn't that enough?

I've learned a great deal from studying men like Gandhi or Dr. King. Just because they didn't perform feats of wizardry, should I take their teachings less seriously?

Christianity is un-American... no, seriously... check it out:

Christians are waltzing through life just waiting to get run over by a Greyhound bus (but living a good and just life, mind you!), so that they can get away from this filthy democracy.

Debates about the democratic nature of the US aside, it's definite progress from the royal or feudal systems of government that we (mankind) were used to before its inception. Christians, though, are awaiting their reward in the kingdom of Heaven -- a kingdom ruled by a lord.

They're farking royalists!

"If Jesus didn't live or come back from the dead the whole religion is gone in an instant."

Well, we pretty much know he DID live, but the whole other part relies on FAITH, not recorded history. Even theologians agree with that.

If Jesus didn't live or come back from the dead the whole religion is gone in an instant.

Well, Xenu didn't imprison a hundred million souls in a volcano by setting off hydrogen bombs, but that doesn't seem to discourage the Scientologists.

That's the whole problem with Christianity, and religion in general: it wouldn't go away even if you could disprove it. You'd have to cauterize that bundle of neurons in 70% of the human brains out there... the one that's left over from the days when survival meant seeking an alpha pack leader and following him without question.

junkevil: yeah thats right, because theres no facts to support your outrageous claims. it must be real easy to only have to say god did something to prove anything.

I guess you think that if trees fall in the woods and no one is around it didn't happen.

Or for thousands of years people that existed didn't exist because no one wrote their names down. No one ever climbed mountains because their footprints are long gone.

So yeah, you still don't get where God even comes into the equation.

Do you also think your grandma is a virgin because you've never seen her farking anyone?

You are missing an important point. Certainly one can pick a moralist from history and follow their example, but the question is whether the "feats of wizadry" done by Jesus or the prophets is true. Did he actually do them? If he did, then absolutely you should listen to what he has to say even if you don't want to follow or believe.

Nope. Wrong wrong wrong. ALL religions are kept alive by blind faith. Your grandmother taught your mother, your mother taught you. You went to church. There is no proof, there is no real history, only a book. A book that has been voted on by a comittee as to what goes in or comes out. Hey, Cujo is real. I read it in a book.

Ask the Germans about what they read in their school books about WWII. I bet it's a little different than what really happened.

You can't even say that history has something to do with religion. If they disprooved the bible TOMORROW, everyone would be ok with it. Why? Because it's just one of god's tests. Test our faith, O lord.
