This is extremely common. People who need O2 tanks are usually addicted to smoking. Go figure.

When I was in the hospital for an appendectomy six months ago some moron lit a cigarette in his room while hooked to the oxygen feed. Lit his whole body on fire and locked down the hospital for 12 hours.

Rick-mind-if-I-call-you-Dick: "Oxygen doesn't burn."

apparently those "no smoking within 100 feet" signs on the tanks of liquid oxygen are just there to infringe on your rights as a smoker.

Is it really ill-informed if you've actually seen it happen firsthand on more than one occasion?

Every day before work I stop at a Circle K, and there's usually this old guy there dragging an oxygen tank behind him. He always gets the same thing. Three packs of Pall Malls and a 40. He drags his tanks outside, removes the tube things from his nose and lights up. One of these days I'm going to see him self immolate. I just know it.

You're right but it sure makes stuff that burns burn better.

The CGI fire in Grey's Anatomy looked like an early 80's B-movie matte. It was laughably bad. It looked like someone added it using Photoshop.

spleef420: apparently those "no smoking within 100 feet" signs on the tanks of liquid oxygen are just there to infringe on your rights as a smoker. Is it really ill-informed if you've actually seen it happen firsthand on more than one occasion?

You haven't seen it happen because it's impossible. "Burning" means something is combining with oxygen. So oxygen burning would be oxygen combining with... itself? It's already O2 and happy to be that way.

2006-10-19 03:21:06 PM
apparently those "no smoking within 100 feet" signs on the tanks of liquid oxygen are just there to infringe on your rights as a smoker.

The oxygen doesn't burn, the oxygen allows other things burn. Highly concentrated oxygen allows other things to burn really really fast and really really hot. So you pretty much ought to treat oxygen as if it were flammable, even though it isn't technically.

2006-10-19 03:21:15 PM

Me & my ex used ta manage an apartment complex. There was this one old couple in their 80's and she was on a oxygen tank. We used to cringe every time we'd see her light up, afraid it might be the one time she'd "blow" up instead of "light" up. Smokers are some stupid farking people man.

/I know, they're addicted
//but that's just taking yer addiction to a new level of farking stupid

One of my mother's friends died like that. Had lung cancer, was hooked up to an oxygen tank, lights a cigarette and had a funeral a few days later.

/not really news

Hydrogen is flammable. Oxygen helps things burn. Water puts out fires. Makes sense.

I hate science.

My grandparents ran a nursing home for many years. This happens ALL the time. My grandmother was one of the first nursing home administrators to ban smoking for those on oxygen. IN 1967-68, 40 years later nothing has changed.

There was a nursing home that burnt down from a oxygen tank exploding from a smoker and a tank with a faulty regulator. that is fark worthy, this story, not so much.

Back when my sister first started at the hospital she works at, they allowed smoking in the rooms. This one old man had been brought in with severe emphysema. They had him in an oxygen tent to help him with his breathing.

My sister was coming down the hall with some charts when she heard one of the nurses screaming. It seems that the man's wife was visiting and that she reallly needed a smoke, so she started to light one up. Luckily the nurse came in at the same time and saved the old man from burning.

The woman, however, got all pissed at the nurse since she knew she could smoke anywhere in the hospital. The nurse pointed to the huge sign over her husband's head for no smoking. The wife said, "Oh I thought that was only for him."

/He never smoked a day in his life, his wife smoked like 4 packs a day.
//He was also a farmer

Dr.Knockboots, I don't watch it... but if I did I was wondering the same thing. I was also wondering why Mc Steamy would tap that. Then I was like well you probably would too... cuz you know a girl like that likes some kinky shiat.

2006-10-19 03:35:59 PM
Meh. I liked the story from awhile back where the male burn ward resident was covered in flammable goo (to treat his wounds). He snuck outside to have a smoke and burst into flames moments after lighting up.

2006-10-19 03:36:26 PM
You know, I always did wonder what IS in just regular old air that burns when this kind of thing happens. What everyday gasses around us are "kind of" flammable?

2006-10-19 03:38:24 PM
Dr.Knockboots, not that I watch the show either, but I've wondered the same thing. I'm guessing Hispanic. There's something appealing about her, in a gothy big-girl kinda way. But the hottest chick on that show is definitely Mrs. McDreamy. She's the kind of hot that makes my teeth rattle...

/not that i watch the show

(Said Dr.Knockboots) What I cant figure out is: The race of the girl that just broke it off with her man. The one that met the handsome doctor in the bar and told him to come up to her room for a drink.

2006-10-19 03:38:43 PM
*sigh*
It's the stuff in the room that's burning, like furniture and people. Not the air. Not the oxygen.

2006-10-19 03:38:44 PM
Wasn't this the plot of last week's Grey's Anatomy?

2006-10-19 03:39:17 PM
LordVger, none unless you work at a dump or gas station or something like that. Air is mostly N

You get a fireball off the cig because the whole farking thing oxidizes in a snap. If you where drinking booze at the same time. Whoo ahh.
