(Rochester D&C)   City unable to actually sell ferry that no one wants, so some anonymous good Samaritan lists it on eBay for them. Hilarity to ensue as long as reserve is met   (democratandchronicle.com) divider line 52

I second the procured initial position in this thread. Woo hoo.

I live in Rochester, and I swear when I picked up the paper this morning and read about this, the first thought I had was "That's so Fark."

I thought the same thing xbbio - I drive by it every day on the way to and from work, and wonder how long it's going to sit there - my tax dollars at work.....

If I am not much mistaken, Maryland sold the Governors Yacht on Ebay a few years back. Damned nice boat.

Is it me, or did the end of the article say that even the guy selling the thing in real life isn't legally allowed to sell it?

Oops, got names all mixed up, 2 'D' names in one article is apparently one too many for me. I blame it on being before 7:00am on the West Coast...

I feel kinda bad for the town. They had a lot of hope that Canadians would actually `want' to visit Rochester.

From article comments:
Who sells and buys high speed ferries on ebay? I would think that a professional ferry "broker" would have more affluent avenues of selling multi-million dollar ships.

Hee...hee...

He said "Ferry-broker".

EBay spokeswoman Katherine England said the seller is responsible for pre-screening bidders.

Translation:

We just want the money. Everything else be damned. We just hope they pay with PayPal.

As a rochesterian, or maybe rochesterfarian sounds better, or even rochesterferryan, who happens to think a lot of stuff is wrong with rochester, there is a lot of stuff right about it, and I'm sure Canadians like to visit once in a while. Well, not canadians like yourself, OldFart

But seriously it would mostly have been for us 'Muricans trying to get out and see how much worse it is to live in a county as foreign as Canada. To save everyone the effort, that was sarcasm.

At this point the City should be grateful for any help they get in unloading this cash eating monster that the previous administration left for the city. To think that ex-mayor johnson, the jackass responsible for this mess, is teaching some politics or management classes at RIT is absolutely absurd

I bet the S&H on that thing is a killer, though.

There are plenty of reasons for people in Rochester and the surrounding area to go to Toronto. There are few reasons for people in Toronto to come to Rochester. It's just the latest Mistake On The Lake and as much as I would have liked to see it succeed it really never had a chance of working.

2006-10-19 10:37:02 AM
Ha! MikeMc ... I've been quoting Monorail ever since they bought the damn thing. Plus now that Mayor Johnson is gone, all sorts of investigations have gone on into how much he received in kickback$ on the deal. And, yes, as b3x points out, the man is now teaching at RIT ... scary. I'm so glad that Duffy is working so hard to unload the thing. If they don't get the deal signed soon, its locked in for the winter when the St. Lawrence Seaway freezes over.

Did I mention how glad I am that my husband and I moved out of Monroe County???

Fireclown:

The governer's yacht was sold on Ebay by Robert Erlich in 2002, however, it was nothing more than a political ploy to show he was "reassess[ing] our need for underutilized State property." In truth, it was nothing more than marketing. It was a really sick sight, throwing away a large part of Maryland history, for nothing more political reasons and $200k.

I haven't been to Rochester in over 20 years, but I thought the ferry was a neat idea. Too bad it turned out to be a bad idea. And I guess I'm a bit embarresed that my alma mater employs the exmayor.

Leggat: But seriously it would mostly have been for us 'Muricans trying to get out and see how much worse it is to live in a county as foreign as Canada.

Sorry Leggat, it was a little joke (like the Rochester tourism board). To be honest, I was hoping the ferry service would have worked. You guys did a ton of work & spent a pile of money on that thing. Had this service opened before the terrorist BS & the rise in the Cdn. loonie, I think it would of had more success.

That was sort of my take on it as well (it's all coming back). I didn't have that much of a problem with the governor of my beloved maryland having access to a boat with which to fete whoever he's fete-ing to relocate to MD. The Governor of MD should be able to cruise the bay in style. Maybe as an effort to have the thing used more they could have made it available to senators as well, if Mikulski could see over the dashboard that is.

no one in Toronto was stupid enough to travel to Rochester for "shopping"

good christ....have you ever been to Rochester? People go there to die

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Hi other Rochesterinites.

Jak Damage

I actually have several friends who live in Toronto and they were (initially) very excited about the ferry. They wanted to buy clothes (and eventually liquor ... once a duty free shop was opened) with lower sales tax and just generally lower prices; they could have saved a bunch of money. Of course that all changed when the price of a round trip ticket went from $12 to $45 for a single person (which happened before the thing even opened).

I actually feel bad for the people who opened stores in the terminal - good buy liquid assets.

I go to the University of Rochester. Last year 11 buddies and I took that fast ferry to Toronto. It was awesome. Financially, however, the ferry has been a disaster.

2006-10-19 11:26:43 AM
And as for the "Rochester sucks" crowd, here is the truth:

The actual city of Rochester is quite crappy with the exception of a small downtown area. However, the suburbs have lots of good places to eat and hang out, and anyone who says there is nothing to to in the Rochester area is completely clueless.

Seriously! We're like, the Drag capital of the United States!

2006-10-19 11:38:31 AM
Black Zombie Jesus,

I was born and raised in Brighton for 18 years.

There is nothing to do in Rochester, at all.

"Going to Wegmans" is not "something to do." And I don't care if you say stuff like "lilac festival" that's 4 days out of the year and usually it rains or snows for 3 of them.

2006-10-19 11:41:16 AM
Sounds similar to the Ferry Scandal the government of BC pulled.

The Seller's Final Bid Fees are going to be a biatch!

As a eBay seller, I'd like to see false bidders get biatch slapped with the cost of the bid, I believe you need a credit card or payment option to even bid on eBay. Could be wrong. I recently sold a $100 item some asshat plugged in $15,000 purposely.

LahDeeFreakingDah: I bet the S&H on that thing is a killer, though.

That's how they always get you..

I'm surprised it wasn't:

Bid $1

S & H: $27,999,999

Bah.. ebay.

2006-10-19 12:42:58 PM
Warcupine, What do you mean "going to Wegmans" doesn't count? Wegmans rocks.
Seriously though, the ferry was a bad idea from the start. I could see Canadians using it to get to the US but not staying in Rochester as there really is nothing to do. Rochester has nothing that Toronto doesn't have.

2006-10-19 12:44:53 PM
i bid 50 bucks but i hope i dont get it....I thought it was a FAIRY.!!!???

2006-10-19 12:58:06 PM
As a Torontonian, I can honestly say I couldn't imagine using the ferry at $12. That it went over $40 made it just plane rediculous.
If the absolute best motivation they came up with for people using the ferry was for cheap shopping, and a ticket costs that much, you're screwed.
While we're at it, wouldn't it have been far more likely to send shoppers to Toronto than the otherway around? When they started the project the loonie was trading at 0.70 US$. And tourists get reimbursed for that damn GST (value added tax which isn't called a value added tax).

Currently I'm sitting in a downtown Rochester office staring out the window at the infinite grayness. Nothing much to add. This venture was retarded and nearly everyone knew it.

Now they're talking about ripping out Broad St. and putting the canal back in its place. Because water attracts businesses. This is equally retarded, except that it would probably be easier to sell the canal water than the freaking ferry.

I miss Nashville.

Maneck: As a Torontonian, I can honestly say I couldn't imagine using the ferry at $12. That it went over $40 made it just plane rediculous.

Try the Lake Michigan ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon MI - $95.00 per person round trip. I'm sure Muskegon is a nice place but I'm not going to spend $95.00 to find out.

2006-10-19 03:08:30 PM
I took the Cat several times, as driving to Rochester and hopping a boat was quicker than going all the way around the damn lake. I understand why it didn't work out, but I'm still sad to see it go. Now I either have to drive an extra 3~ hours and find parking near TO, or get a plane ticket.

I did meet a very nice old lady in the terminal (Stateside) parking lot once, though. On the downside, another time some farker knocked my sideview mirror off my car. You try driving back to the coast without a side mirror!

2006-10-19 07:29:20 PM
Ah, Mike, that should read "from Muskegon to Milwaukee". Been there, done that.

I lived in Rochester for 23 years and never had any problem finding something 'to do'. In Rochester, if you're bored, you're boring.

/Live in Hawaii now
//wish to god Wegman's would open up on the far west coast

Jesus tapdancing christ, noone's bombed that thing yet? I left Rochester 6 months ago, and spent the 6 months before that griping about that damn boat appearing in every local news cast to air. If i had stayed for another month i'd probably have gone psycho(er) and tried to sink it just to get TV back.

Toronto advertises for tourism here. Rochester does not advertise tourism in the same way up there.

//that is all
