Sometimes the dumb@ss tag isn't enough.

In all fairness though, this guy must have been retarded, in a real and lasting sense. He should be in a home for the mentally handicapped. One with spotlights, high fences and nurses named Jim.

That's why I always use a fake license and wear a disguise. I've made over $500,000 this year by doing that. Suck it, car dealers! (Audi's are the easiest...)

I worked with a guy who did this. When I was in college I worked at a gas station and this guy worked there who had some serious problems. I don't know if he was mentally ill or just did a lot of drugs, but he was out there. One day he showed up, when he was off, in a brand new car. We all knew there was no way he could afford it and he told us he was just taking it for a test drive. After a few minutes he left and we didn't think anything of it until the cops showed up about an hour later asking if we knew where he was. Next day he showed up for his regular shift, without the car - I guess they released him, or he got bailed out after they caught him. He continued working at the station for another couple days/weeks until they caught him stealing money. Nice Guy.

I recently test drove several new and used trucks, the dealers actually declined to see or hold my ID when I offered. I don't think I even gave the first one my name. But I'm white, that's one of the perks (ducks).

crazycooter

I worked with a guy in High School that did something similar except he didn't steal them.

He'd take a nice car for a test drive (corvette, etc) and bring it by work. "Look at what I just bought". But you'd never see him in it again. You'd ask where the vette was and he'd say "That's my weekend car".

A couple weeks later he show up with a different car saying he got sick of the last one. He actually thought people were buying it.

I went into a dealership in upstate New York about 30 minutes before they closed during a virtual blizzard and asked to test-drive a new car.

The guy behind the desk through me the keys and said "we close in 30 minutes". I didn't buy the car (just wanted to drive one) but have never had that happen since. Now they practically run you through the DHS database to drive one.

The Decider, it's great that people are so obsessed with transportation methods as status symbols that they're willing to fabricate elaborate deceptions in order to try and get people to think better of them, eh?

Too bad he never learned that people would like him a lot more if he was just a nice guy.

Can the dealer sell a stolen car as new? I'd think they would lose out big time on depreciation.

2006-10-18 02:15:32 PM
I've never been asked for a license or anything by a dealer. Here in central Illinois, they just hand you the keys.

I'd be out of work right now if I did that even once. Mind you, we did have one guy try and steal a truck from our lot a couple of months ago... took the keys, started it up and took off before the salesman could even grab the passenger doorhandle. We thought we were pretty careful before, but now we don't even suggest turning the key before we get a license.

I've never had a test drive where the salesmen didn't come along.

/wish I had though, I never really feel comfortable checking out the performance with the salesmen there.

I test drove a car at a Honda dealer and the guy didn't ask for any ID. Told me to be back in 30 minutes or less and tossed me the keys.

DocGerbil Can the dealer sell a stolen car as new?

The answer to your question is "Yes." Usually, the criteria is that the vehicle has not been previously registered.

If I were selling it though, I would certainly disclose the fact at some point, probably during negotiations by way of explaining why exactly they were getting such a good deal and how they would never have such an opportunity to steal it themselves again!

We're GIVING it away!!!! If I give you that price, you'll never be able to bend over in the shower again! Do you like your salad tossed? I just need your initials right here and I can get all the paperwork started for you.

That's kinda the idea, though. It helps me gauge how someone feels about the car they're driving and deal with any objections the moment they arise.

Far as "checking out the performance" goes, I don't mind if someone wants to take it out on the highway to the first exit, drop the hammer a bit and get a feel for it. If they want to drive it like they're Matt Kenseth, though, I'll bring a buyer's order with me.

I understand that when you're along for the ride and you're asking "so what do you do for a living?", you're not just making small talk but trying to gauge whether I can afford the car.

I think most people just wished the "sell" wasn't so obvious.

Yes and no. A certain domestic car manufacturer has a plant here in town that employs about 1/25th of the population, and I happen to sell for that same manufacturer. More than half the time, asking them where someone works means I find out if they qualify for employee discounts and if they do, which ones.

The same scenario happened at a motorcycle dealership I used to work at. A guy took a $12,000 Ducati 998 out for a demo ride and decided not to come back. A YELLOW Ducati. AFAIK, there is only one of these in my city, and this jackass stole it.

He got caught, we got our bike back, and I've been subpoenaed as a witness for a court date sometime next year.

He's a meth-head, in case you're wondering. I have my doubts that he'll still be alive for his court date.

Wouldn't that be considered GTA? Last I checked people didn't get OR (own recognizance) bonds when they stole cars; especially, when you have prior convictions. You can get away with anything, here in Cincinnati. That is, of course, unless you play for the Bengals.

This must be one of those NEW car dealerships and not 2nd hand dealers or whatnot... Hell, I was able to take one of the trucks I test drove out with just one of the dealers in the back seat.

The Decider

Salesmen ask what you do for a living in order to try to understand your mindset.

What you earn is not as important as your credit in making a deal go down. Co-signers are always a possibility as well. Inheritances are good too, as are winning lottery tickets. None of these is related to your employment.

Most good automotive sales managers train their crew not to "qualify" people who come on the lot. We say "Write 'em, don't fight 'em." Until we have a signed credit application or a suitcase full of cash, we have no idea if we can roll you in that car.

Sounds like you might be a little bit defensive.

Exactly, I remember a few years ago my dad got shunned off the Land Rover lot for showing up in a GEO Metro he wanted to trade in (It was a inheritance from our Great Aunt).

The next day he ran into the salesman showed him the new Infiniti he bought. Land Rover would have been his first choice if they had given him the time of day.

I don't buy cars from dealers that insist on going for a test drive. American car dealers are the worst, followed closely by cheap Japanese cars (Mazda), at this. First time I test drove a new 3-series the guy took my license and said we'll see you in 20 minutes or so. I've pulled into Porsche dealerships and taken a 911 out and we both knew I couldn't afford it. I think they let a person appreciate the car and maybe in 20 years when you can afford it you'll remember or something..I don't know. Then again, maybe it's just because they know a BMW or Porsche will sell itself vs. a Mazda which needs more sales talk?

2006-10-18 10:41:30 PM
A lot of times the "autopilot" test drive is for the prospects who are NOT worth spending time on.

You should demand a bit more respect.
