Frottage is timeless.

- Baby can sit in the corner as long she wants as she puts up with the socially-awkward friction of the Swaze-hammer. (Unfortunately this scene ended up on the cutting room floor)

Welcome to the year 2001 (inland), 1956 (coastal).

QFT. At the very least, I know for a fact that this was common practice when I was in junior high.

Old...

Parents here (rural Texas) think it is new though. I was a chaperone at a middle school dance recently and had a parent who couldn't let her precious baby out of sight come up to me asking if we were just go "let those kids do that."

It was two kids in a crowd of 400, and it was mild as far as freaking goes. I had to look for a minute or so before I even saw the couple she was pointing out.

from TFA: "The 'dancing' of our youngsters today is one step from events that should be occurring on wedding nights,"

i almost went on a rant about this guy imposing his morals yadda yadda, but he's right. it should be happening on your wedding night (just not exclusively)

This story is old and busted. Why did it take so long for Australia to receive word about this particular case in Aliso Viejo? Don't they have tubes down there?

2006-10-17 09:28:16 PM
At my senior prom in Ot 2, one of the chaperones, a health teacher (and a perv at that), scolded me for "freaking." I deserved it, as my "partner in crime" was bent over in front of me at a right angle, and as I recall I was waving my hand around in a spanking gesture. I'm not sure anyone actually knew how to dance facing the other person.

To me, the true "Forbidden Dance" shall always be the Lambada!

2006-10-17 09:37:37 PM
I'm still in HS, and that always creeps me out. I used to go to the dances, but I just don't anymore because I don't want to participate in a large scale dry humping to rap session. I'd rather take my date elsewhere, and thats what I plan on doing (this weekend is homecoming, actually)

oh. what. evar.

hell, even the amish do it.

/what?

2006-10-17 09:38:51 PM
Yeah, my old high school was freaking cracking down on this. It was really stupid. They patrolled the perimeter of the dance floor, shining flashlights, looking for people. When they found someone, they called their parents. Kind of a waste of time. If they wanted to crack down on something, it should have been the drug and alcohol problems.

in high school our administrators tried to get around this by mandating that "both feet be on the floor at all times"

needless to say, students shuffled around, and chastised the chaperones for walking, claiming that they were violating dance policy

2006-10-17 09:55:16 PM
Once, this one time, dancing was against the law in my town. Then, a stranger came. No one liked him at first, but then he showed us all how much fun we could have with some good old dancing. The jocks didn't like him too much, but that was because he stole this one guy's girl.

Eventually, the law was overturned and we were allowed to dance.

"freaking" - where couples rub and grind against each other - has been branded as simulated sex by school officials

Simulated sex? No, it's REAL sex. It's called dry humping. The only difference is that kids used to do it in private and were afraid to get caught by adults.

Also, I predict that the next stage in the "evolution" of teenage dancing will be actual intercourse on the dance floor using strategically placed holes in clothing. Kids will defend it as "innocent" since "it's not like we're getting married or anything" and "he's using a condom so it's safe".

2006-10-17 10:25:28 PM
Ugh, rap is way past its time. I think we need to concentrate on the new music craze that is emerging.

Euro. Dance. Trash.

This has been going on for years. And I hated it when I was in high school; who wants to get ground against by sweaty, pimply-faced boys who have no sense of rhythm? Still hate it now, because I don't appreciate total strangers in clubs - most of whom STILL have no sense of rhythym - doing it either. And then as now, it's always the sketchiest/ugliest guys who insist on doing it and don't understand that moving away means you're not interested.

2006-10-17 10:33:06 PM
Degradation is a cumulative effect. Slippery slope and all that jazz.

Eventually the ride will reset and we will be back in the Victorian era (or pick your prude era). This "reset" is generally extremely unpleasant because it's often due to a collapse of the society involved.

2006-10-17 10:35:17 PM
And who more perfect to set us back 200 years than oh, say, prudish and overly religious parents?

I can actually see that happening--first it's school uniforms to keep kids from killing one another, next it's no recess or school dances to keep them from having sex... supposedly.

2006-10-17 10:40:04 PM
My woman used to like it when I would rub the onion that was tied to my belt all up ons.

Yeah I went there... With my onion no less.

We still have room for things to get much worse. Those people you speak of can't stop it. The crazies are the ones that don't realize they can't stop it and try to use force.

Does Google have a way to find the earliest reference to something? Hmmm... Nope. :^(

My guess is that it goes back to at least the early 90s.

I would say it goes back as long as people have been dancing. Goes right along with "oldest profession" in fact.

Ral: Also, I predict that the next stage in the "evolution" of teenage dancing will be actual intercourse on the dance floor...

Been done. Couple at one of the local schools where I grew up got busted at prom. His fly was down and her dress was strategically lifted. Problem was they weren't quite as steady on their feet as they thought they were, got a bit too involved, and ended up on the floor. School admin had a picnic making that one good with the parents.

You know what's so stupid about this? It's the predominant form of dancing in the West Indies, and it's called wining. Everyone does it -- kids, old people, people at weddings, clubs, wherever.

Ah, the first of the annual "oh noes freak dancing!!1" articles.

It's like..
"Kids today have no respect for their elders!"
or
"Kids today dress so slothenly!"

These complaints are as old as civilization itself.

2006-10-18 10:51:13 AM
I think I learned about this my first year in college (1990 and I was REALLY sheltered) and decided that this was more fun than sex and a lot less messy.

2006-10-18 12:09:29 PM
Freak dancing = your slutty teenage daughter getting dry humped by random dudes in front of everyone.

2006-10-18 01:09:31 PM
Do you think people got this worried about Vaudeville and swing dancing when those were popular?

Probably.

Just goes to show that no matter how many old/busted sag bags say they don't like it, the young people are still in control.
