California is behind Utah! That's unpossible!

/seriously. Bush got like 90% of the popular vote there.

2006-10-17 07:47:29 PM
I've always wondered if California attracted dumb people, or just made them dumb once they got there.

blindman

took DC out because didn't have smartness data for it. It did have an IQ value by the way of 95 from the link you provided (which would strengthen the correlation!)

The other interesting think - the correlation of smartness and IQ is negative, so these bozo's and their smartness measure is complete crap. In fact, if I add randomness equal to the annual change in their ranking, then their data is meaningless. But they charge school administrators 800 bucks a pop. Who is smart after all?

2006-10-17 07:50:08 PM
As has already been pointed out, the criteria used in this study are complete crap.

procrastin8or Hmmm...14 of top 20 are blue states. coincidence?

Not a coincidence. The first item on their ranking agenda is tax rate.

Well, whatever the situation may be...I think we can truthfully say that all the treehugging, troop-hating, cindy Sheehan-loving liberals in California really ARE retards after all LOL

>>As has already been pointed out, the criteria used in this study are complete crap.

As long as the people in the dumb states believe the criteria, I think it all still works.

IQ versus %pop, with data from here

That IQ list by state and 2004 election results is 100% fake.

After reading the article right above this about Massachusetts schools banning tag you would think they would be a lot lower.

Well it doesn't help when the State Superintendant of Schools has been quoted saying something along the lines of "anyone with a BA can teach".

Actually Blindman is using a version that claims to debunk the link that you provide (but uses the damn same color scheme - idiots). It looks to be a balanced and measured approach, but I can't find the raw underlying data, so can't verify it. The numbers are different from the Snopes link though, as I mentioned in my post above.

Sensei: States with large ESL populations are going to do worse -- unless they throw all those kids out of the mix, which I don't see how they can.

I present to you, Virginia, number 6.

Sorry - I was diligent in my 1st 2 xplots but got so excited and had a raging clue so forgot. IQ on X-axis. % of population of a state that is black Y axis

2006-10-17 07:57:33 PM
How about a map comparing hispanic decent to a states intelligence...

Hey, if black was brought up, why not the other minority.

Okay, you'd have to compare it to school districts terroritory to IQ to the demographics in that area to get the best idea.

Heh, you are right! I'm just so used to debunking the fake IQ list that it's a reaction of mine to post the snopes link.

I've never seen the same color scheme chart used with another set of data. However, I have seen the methodology used to create this list, and it's definitely the best out there. The author of this list mentioned that it's nowhere perfect, but it's a pretty good guess.

Vermont. Yep.

To be fair, the USA is still #14 or so in the world.

Suck it, world. We've got nukes and as soon as we figure out how to use 'em you're GONE!

I thought your way too - I was quick to jump over blindman. In the end it's a fun discussion.

My concern with the data is 3-fold
1) I can't track down to original sources
2) he estimates IQ from SAT scores (biased sample)
3) blacks have historically underperformed on standardized tests relative to whites for a number of possible reasons. I seem to recall efforts to make standardized tests background-neutral

Vermont. Yep.

that's only because of the mass of 'tards in California and Arizona.

If we could get rid of California, our ranking would shoot up about 5 spots right off the bat.

Anyway correlation isn't causation and all that jazz.

marzipanic 1) I can't track down to original sources

The site I saw was this: http://www.sq.4mg.com/IQ-States.htm

Personally, I don't think you aren't going to find anything better than this. There are no decent standardized nationwide tests of adults (or near adults) nationwide, so a SAT/ACT combination is probably the closest we'll ever get. Even then, there is bound to be problems with such as list, and that link describes several.

"smartness" equal large teacher pay.

And you'd think that would be an output of the smartness equation, not an input.

Cumulative "smart rating" of states that voted for Bush 2004: -89.02

California ranks low because of our massively undereducated farm workers. Central California blows all stats to hell.

Purelilac

Californians made their beds...time to lie in them.

You say it's because of the undereducated farm workers, a lot of whom are probably illegal Mexicans. The reason they are there is because California is so touchy-feely about offending someone in the country illegally that the entire state as a whole doesnt have enough testicular material to account for ONE scrotum.

Or, it could be because the entire state is full of whiny panty-wipes that are more concerned with finding their next pair of Birkenstocks and putting flashy LED lights on their cellphone covers than actually getting an education.

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: tarrant84: Of course Pennsylvania is up there... we have Pitt, Duquense, Carnegie Mellon, UPenn, Villanova, Bryn Mawr College, Swarthmore, Haverford, Temple, Drexel, Bucknell, Penn State... and a whole bunch of crappy colleges.

Lafayette and Lehigh aren't slouches either. There are several more good liberal arts colleges, too. Muhlenberg, Gettysburg, and Dickinson.

Oh yeah, and Franklin and Marshall.

You know, I tell people back home where I go to college, and I have heard more than once "Never heard of it. Is it a community college?"

Not a lot of red states in the top 20. Here's the 2004 winners:

1  Vermont        Kerry
2  Massachusetts  Kerry

6  Virginia       Bush

Not to intimidate anyone, but I was able to figure out the change in rank without using the third column...West Virginia educated, you know

2006-10-17 08:34:50 PM
MtLebanonBalogna: That makes me question why so many non-rednecks (i.e., Burghers and Philadelphoids) go to Penn State. Maybe it's just to mix with some locals to "get real?" Y'know, like the suburban white kids are attracted to hip-hop and/or thug culture? Wow, I didn't realize the Yinzers and Philly folks were so open-minded.

I'm a transplant to PA (for work). When I went to Penn State, one-third of the campus was from Philly, another third from da Burgh, and the rest of us from out of state/country. Oh, and I guess you could throw the kids of faculty in with that last third.

/at least it seemed that way

BlindMan

I think your premise is faulty:

So assuming that people at the highest levels of intelligence are at least no MORE likely to be drawn to low paying fields than less intelligent people (a safe assumption) - it would still hold that wealthier people are on average, more intelligent.

Here's a counter argument cited from wiki

link

Intelligence is most commonly measured using IQ tests. These tests are often geared to be good measures of the psychometric variable g (for general intelligence factor), and other tests that measure g (for example, the Armed Forces Qualifying Test and the SAT) also serve as measures of cognitive ability.
All such tests are often called "intelligence tests," though the use of the term "intelligence" is itself controversial. It is clear, however, that performance in these tests correlates with performance in similar life tasks (school grades and to a lower degree college grades). The correlation with many real-world results is lower. For example, while the correlation of IQ with job performance is strong, income is modestly correlated and accumulated wealth is only weakly correlated. The hereditary transmission of wealth via IQ is near zero. As commonly used, "IQ test" denotes any test of cognitive ability, and "IQ" is used as shorthand for scores on tests of cognitive ability. Some critics question the validity of all IQ testing or claim that there are aspects of "intelligence" not reflected in IQ tests. Historically, criticisms of the validity of IQ testing focused primarily on questions of "test bias", which has many related meanings. Several conclusions about tests of cognitive ability are now largely accepted:
