From the article:
"The ratings are based on 21 elementary and secondary education indicators, ranging from graduation rates and test scores to teacher pay and class size."

The first two I can understand, but the second two? Some states are cheaper to live in, so wages are lower. Some states have a stable or shrinking population, so class sizes are smaller. This is relativistic in the extreme.

Get back to me after at least a 5% random sampling of the general population has taken a standardized IQ test.

2006-10-17 07:04:57 PM
I agree with you who noted that evaluating "smart" per "teacher pay" and "class size" indicates the testers aren't the brightest.

wife works in nevada school system, as an aide for kindergarden.

Teacher: " a parallel line is a line that is the same length as another line."
Wife: "WTF?"

Different Teacher: " a synonym is a word that means the opposite of another word"

Wife: "WTF?"

/Wife born and raised in nevada is smarter than the teachers making twice what she does.
//Doesn't contradict the teacher cause it's in her contract not to.
///most of her family are born and raised in nevada and are also teachers.
////some of them are idiots.
//more slashes then nessisary.

I live in the Northeast.

I could not afford to live in California, which is presently #47.

Correction - you couldn't live in California while maintaining the lifestyle to which you are presently accustomed. If you were willing to live 12 to an apartment like the Mexicans do, you could afford to live there.

-Which explains why California is at the bottom of this list, as it really just measures educational achievement. California hosts and supports millions of illegal Mexicans who have a third-grade education at best and are virtually illiterate in Spanish, to say nothing of English. Is it any wonder that their kids aren't exactly setting the school system on fire? (Well, at least not metaphorically.)

2006-10-17 07:09:38 PM
marzipanic - Actually I just pulled up the data and did it myself there is a clear trend line and a correlation of --0.54, and (obviously) an r squared of 29.4%.

What this correlation MEANS (if anything) is of course a totally other question.

2006-10-17 07:10:57 PM
Well that explains why Arnold will win by a landslide again.

2006-10-17 07:11:07 PM
Minnesota dropped 6 points to 13th place.
Explains why we wanted the Republican convention.

/(future comment)

2006-10-17 07:12:49 PM
Well the big problem being how the did the survey. Teacher Pay doesn't really correlate to smarter people.

Graduation rates are usually more of an indicator of poverty than lack of intelligence. Any state with large cities or a large percentage of poor "urban" dwellers is going to have a large amount of dropouts

When you calculate in all the ESL students in California on scales of who's proficient in reading english of course it's going to drag the score down.

*sigh*

I give up. You probably get the picture by now.

Not to mention any study coming out of Kansas is suspect.

2006-10-17 07:13:15 PM
This list is bullshiat, they have states moving in ranking by up to 12 places in just one year. No state education reform, good or bad, could be that dramatic in such a short time.

which data? %population versus IQ or %pop versus smartness?
not sure I trust a blindman's view of a clear trend line.

WE'RE NUMBER 50!!!

That's good, right?

2006-10-17 07:13:28 PM
what, is this DC is invisible day? First an article about how powerful your congressperson is, and now we're nowhere to be found on the smartometer.

We are off the charts in smarts, people, OFF THE CHARTS!

OK blindman

I call your bluff. I plotted % of a state's population that is black against the smartness rank. r^2 is 0.07.

Interesting. The chart is kind of like the birth of the country and the migration of Americans to the south and to the west. The farther we went the stupider we became.

yeah, because everyone here voted against him.

suck it, GW! Stop lowering our grade point average.

heinousjay

The average difference between the "Smart" state rank, and the inverse "% black" state rank (inverse to put the higher % black at 50, and the lowest % black at 1) gives an average difference of 14.2. Therefore there is no correlation between the Smart rank and the % black population in the state.

They must have surveyed the brain belt known as the Lower Yakima Valley to represent Washington.

For whatever they lack in smarts, they make up for it with their winemaking skills.

tarrant84: "...PA just has a lot of great schools... too bad there's nothing but rednecks in between Pittsburgh and Philly..."

That makes me question why so many non-rednecks (i.e., Burghers and Philadelphoids) go to Penn State. Maybe it's just to mix with some locals to "get real?" Y'know, like the suburban white kids are attracted to hip-hop and/or thug culture? Wow, I didn't realize the Yinzers and Philly folks were so open-minded.

Whatever.

How exactly does does class size and teacher salary make you smart? Oh, that's right it doesn't. It is no suprise that 3 of the top 5 'smartest' states in this ranking are also 3 of the top 5 wealthiest states. Whoever did this ranking is a moron.

And here's my wildly unscientific Smart Rating of the people who voted for the following candidates in 2004 based on the total returns from each state.

Bush -1.222973222
Kerry -0.816680651
Nader 1.286872481
Badnarik -1.51679305
Peroutka -3.126510456
Cobb -1.992468584

Can't verify your data original sources. Not sure if I wholly trust it
(See Snopes for example http://www.snopes.com/politics/ballot/stateiq.asp)
but assuming it's valid . . .here's the plot to argue about.

yes, i realize the factors that went into these rankings...

i know a bunch of dummies that make a shiatload more money than i do without any type of prestigious degree. intelligence is overrated; it's more like finding a niche that is lucrative.

2006-10-17 07:38:54 PM
Minnesota, my old state, is only 13th? This ranking was probably done while Jesse Ventura was still living in the state, so the ranking would be higher now.

2006-10-17 07:40:12 PM
farkthesouth.com will help explain some of that.

Weird... I wonder why you got a somewhat different result than me? You did remember to take out the district of columbia right? Otherwise it will make the correlation look a lot stronger since it has the highest %pop and will have a blank -0- value in IQ
