British: I wonder about a lot of the nameless faces behind the "funy" pics, but mostly about the "attention whore!" one.

Good thing we have the Mustard Man on board ;)

I've always wondered if the sharp knees guy knows what's going on here. Or was he from here? I don't recall the origin of that pic. It might have been before my time.

The family of that owl would like you to know that they are not amused, DiamondDave.

vandelay: You know, looking at that original poster, I think that bastard took more than his fair share! CUP BIG ENOUGH FOR YA OLE BOY?!?

You insensitive bastard. The guy was a dwarf.

untrustworthy
If half the country fled to Mexico, they'd just be going home.

Good one. Made me laugh.

So he was the 8th dwarf, Shakey?

Murray died Oct. 16, 2002, at age 87 in St. Mary's Hospital in Troy after a battle with Parkinson's disease.

I'm surprised there's any coffee left in that cup.

IXI Jim IXI: It's the very last paragraph that bothers me most about it - she's not looking for a cut herself, but is looking to stir up trouble for others who use public domain images in a way that could cause "outrage" to folks related to the images:

Phillips is frustrated by the responses to her complaints.

"The Army advised me that images taken by the Army become public domain, so there is not much that can be done," she said. "However, if other families can be forewarned, they may be able to express their outrage and concern about these particular Web sites. The Web sites are making large amounts of money based on unknown anger, humiliation and pain caused to unsuspecting families."

She's acknowledged that there isn't any legal recourse, nor is this particularly onerous, but the article still calls out CafePress and tries to make this a moral issue. It's a tempest in a teacup.

As an aside, I'm interested in the contrast between this discussion and the flap Chevrolet managed to cause by trying to use everything from Martin Luther King to 9/11 to sell pickup trucks.

sounds like she needs a cup herself.

quit farking whining.

2006-10-17 02:51:56 PM
I don't feel bad about the usage in the PS. I do feel bad that people are dumb enough to pay cafepress for that image (or any other for that matter) on one of their crappy pieces of merch.

2006-10-17 02:51:57 PM
I know if that was me on the poster, I'd think it was funny as hell.

I'd be pissed, though, if I ended up in a book of propaganda like the one slapped together by fake-ranger Micah Wright.

2006-10-17 02:52:10 PM
I personally can't wait for Mickey friggn' Mouse to become public domain, for the same reason.

Never going to happen, Disney has enough money to get copyright raised to infinity + 1. Just a few years ago they managed to get it raised to 95 years, I'm betting they are never going to let it get to public domain.

Us internet farkers are never going to give that image up, did the Russians give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbour? No and neither will we.

Wow. Too bad your mom's image isn't being desecrated all over the Internet, so we could call you a whiny loser or some such name, for caring about it.

I think most of us are saying we fail to see how his image is being desecrated. The tagline says nothing derogatory or insulting about him, he's just the smiling face offering you the cup.

Now if it said something like "I like to drink the blood of Jap babies" then I could see calling the images use as "desecration".

As many have noted I bet if the guy were aliive he'd probably be flattered and amused at it's current revival.

Ok, so using the image of a WWII vet whose family has expressed, let's say displeasure, in crass or vulgar photoshops is A-OK on Fark. But using Rosa Parks' image, whose estate most likely did give permission, to sell Chevy trucks is over the line?

Gotcha.

Not that I give a crap either way, but it is always nice to know where the boundries are.

IOW, she wanted to sue, but was told to go have a nice cup of shut-the-fark-up instead.

Hmm, an army of dwarves... Gives new meaning to "Do with less...".

p.s. Not to neccessarily justify myself to some prick who made fun of me, but I am endlessly appreciative of our WWII vets, including both my grandpas, one of whom was sunk TWICE in the Pacific (and had some nerve-rattling tales about it) and the other who is alive and spunky as all hell and loves to talk about his experiences

Don't hold your breath, buddy. Disney's dead hand will squeeze that mouse until 2123 or later.

I believe the reason for the distinction is that fark photoshops are not for profit.

FormlessOne: She's acknowledged that there isn't any legal recourse, nor is this particularly onerous, but the article still calls out CafePress and tries to make this a moral issue. It's a tempest in a teacup.

The article isn't doing anything. The writer didn't add that in part in. That was a direct quote from her. It's not like this is a hit piece written by a writer with an agenda. They even make the point very clearly that the picture is in the public domain.

As for making it a moral issue, that's well within her rights. It happens all the time...people rant and rave and boycott things and it's completely legal.

The article isn't even calling out Cafepress...it just mentions that that's where it was found. The woman herself is talking about sites like that in general.

If anything hurt Cafepress, it's how they dodged with the "well, we don't design the stuff, and we have a lot of different designs" line. God...suck it up and defend your right to sell the stuff.

We have the Battleground park, with some cival war and revoutionary stuff in it... and there's one downtown but I don't recall it having anything as cool as that in it. Maybe I should go look again.

I thought for a minute they were talking about this guy:

shaymlss: Nope - that's just the consensus of a bunch of basement jerkoffs with no girlfriends, who need (for some reason) to think that the woman is a biatch.

No -

it doesn't really matter what she thinks. her dad would hopefully laugh at it.

bottom line is - it's not making fun of him - it's just an awesome pic that is funny to photoshop other text on to.

what's the big deal?

2006-10-17 03:01:03 PM
There was something similar-ish to this I was reading about - it might've been on Fark - about some guy selling shirts with the names of all of the dead kids (soldiers, but really, 95% of them are just kids) that fell in Iraq and all of their parents' getting pissed about it.

Difference is, though, that poster isn't really cashing in on the sacrifices during WW2, while the shirts with the Iraqi war casualties is SPECIFICALLY to cash in on the sacrifices of day. The guy who made the 'new' version of this poster is hilarious - the people who tug at heartstrings to sell shiat in the 'honor' of a bunch of dead kids are assholes.

I'm still somewhat baffled by the differences between the situation that spawned the original picture & poster and the one we're in now.

WWII: Ration! Conserve! Recycle!
War on Terror®: Shop! Consume! Buy bigger SUVs!

You'd think the Army would have made posters similar to this one, but showing people carpooling and a soldier being embraced by his family with the caption, "Carpool and save gas so we can bring him home sooner." I think it's kind of sad that apparently much of my generation (and the previous one) seem to consider the word 'sacrifice' to be a 4-letter-word.

/sadly, some of them probably think it literally is one as well

Wow, the family of the O RLY owl my be beside themselves.

Incidentally, does anybody know of any sites where all these images are featured? I just kinda wanted to see what all's out there.

2006-10-17 03:13:56 PM
Ashyukun I sold my car and bike to work (only 11 miles each way). Do you at least carpool, like you suggest, or are you just another liberal whiner that is all talk, no action? Like that nut Gore, that flies massive jets all over the world to have conversations about enviro practices...convos that could have been held, oh I dunno, over the phone? If Kyoto was serious, it would have been a teleconference.

ps - if you live too far from work to ride a bicycle, either get a new job or get a new house. Or ride the bus. Or STFU.

Actually Ashyukun, a lot of business oweners complain the IRS won't give them a break UNLESS they buy an SUV(!) I know there was a magnet shortage(!) because of the U.N.'s Korean Police Action but after that, only shortages came from OPEC's undeclared war on us for helping Israelis-which really continues to this day

Synergy, people-Hollywood Funeral is actually changing their name to Nice Cup...

farm-raised wingless quailtard: Wow, making fun of a dead WWII veteran with Parkinson's disease. Only on Fark.

did you expect anything different? I love people who come to this site, JUST to get pissed off at something someone says, and then make a stink about it. shiz like this happens every day, if you don't like it, find a different "news" site to linger on.

shaymlss: Nope - that's just the consensus of a bunch of basement jerkoffs with no girlfriends, who need (for some reason) to think that the woman is a biatch.

I take offense to this, I don't live in a basement. no one needs to think this woman is a biatch, she does it for us. there's really nothing wrong with the pic, aside from them changing the text. it's not desecrating on his image, beliefs, rights, family.. nothing. it's just him smiling, holding a cup of whatever. I don't see the big deal. And apparently, neither do about 85% of the rest of the readers on here right now.

I've never seen this picture and it makes me laugh to no end.
