This story needs a happy ending... The cop was there to tell everyone the creepy dood passed out in the dark booth called in a bomb threat ten minutes ago, he was there to boom. The End.

The band member deserved it.
Its obvious they were playing copyrighted Stevie Wonder songs.

Methinks the staff writer has a crush. Hopefully, she's 14.

I picture a young Fabio.

First, I never stated I wasn't a big pussy myself..

Secondly, having lived in Philly for about 10 years, I have seen enough abuse of power to know that most police officers in large urban areas are pretty damned dumb, and pretty immoral.

Third, even "after the fact" when you bring on the lawyers, many of the FoP dumbasses STILL will come after you (not just legally- they will have your name and address). And often they will win. So why NOT stand up for your rights.

Foruth, follow these simpel instructions

But really, we should start demanding as a people that our police act like human beings, and not arrogant pigs.....

If anyone followed those rules you listed, this would not have turned out the way it did.

I agree that many cops are power-hungry asses, but unless it's a completely ridiculous request (ie: sucking him off), just go with it. If it really upsets you, you can deal with it later. Nothing good ever comes from being confrontational with the police. During the incident, the police will always be right. It sucks, but they are in a position with much more immediate power than the average person.

"All country music performers, and their fans, deserve taserin'. Give that man a hero tag."

They're not country... They even describe themselves as an offshoot of The White Stripes. The band who opened for them, the Train Wreck Riders, aren't anywhere near country either.

Remember, this is the same Texas where you can be arrested for being drunk while sitting in a bar.

Sometimes you get the impression that Texas is the state that evolution forgot.

2006-10-16 03:41:49 PM
So the cop walks in and asks them to turn down the volume. They do...but then before the cop even walks out the door they turn it back up.

The cop goes on stage and asks the guitar player to stop. The guitarist says "why?"...the cop says stop...and again get the "why?".

The cop then physically restrained the guitar player and members of the crowd began to aproach in a very aggresive manner. Several of them actually made physical contact with both the officer and the guitar player the cop was trying to subdue.

^^
That seems like the story right? Between the article and the videos that seems about what happened just before the cop started using his stun gun. Right?

K, let me just say this to all you little kids that think your lawyers and that think you should fight back against the police.

It's real simple.

When you're doing something bad or illegal...or even something that could possibly be construed in any possible way as such...AND a cop tells you to stop...

DO IT.

The cop wants you to stop NOT to keep you from having a good time...NOT to put you down...NOT because he works for GW Bush and the Republican Right...

He's doing his job. He doesn't make a lot of money or have any aspirations towards totalitarianism. Look at the videos. Look how scared he is...the last thing he wanted to do was cause a riot.

When 'Keeping' it Real Goes Wrong!'

Ok kids... I'm a 38 year old who was a rebelious misfit for most of my life. (now a social worker) I'm liberal but also have enough real world experience to realize that there is no upside to any interaction with the police.

I know it seems like you are just flexing your rights when you act like a smart ass (hell it's fun!) but chances are you will get yourself an ass-kickin'. And if you ever put your hands on a cop, no matter how softly, consider yourself lucky if you only get arrested and not shot.

I'm a social worker which means you get to argue with me. File a complaint about bad cops, don't get yourself tasered.

So, act like an ass if you want to but procede with caution

"Dro if you've got to show up and make it racial, I'll go ahead and propose something that occurred to me of a racial nature about this... which is if the cop had been beating up and tazering black dudes for no reason and the whole thing was on video - there would probably be a riot in the slums of houston tonight.
====================================================

Which means what? That Black people atre more fed up with abusive police than other people? The only thing that you're proving is how isolated this incident is in a club whose patrons are mostly White. I think the correct analogy is that if this was a story about how MC Such-and-Such and a bunch of Black patrons got tasered by a White cop, there would be a lot less empathy for the victim and many more people would appear to 'understand' where the cop was coming from. Funny how that works.

2006-10-16 03:44:25 PM
DROxINxTHExWIND,

And I'll make it a point to ask this question in EVERY thread where a White person runs afoul of the law... where are the questions about the role of race and his 'culture'? Surely, he's been taught to act like a thug through music and the White 'thug culture' that's promoted with movies like "Bully". It can't be that someone was just an a-hole. It has to in someway relate to how he was raised, right? No one is going to drop a "go back to Holland, you cracker" post?

I'm pretty sure that this has been explained numerous times, but if you missed it, I'll be more than happy to explain it to you again.

Black people are inferior to white people and lack the impulse control that white people possess. White music is light-hearted, positive, and encourages a sense of community. Black music is disgusting, violent, and sows the seeds of cultural decay.

White people realize that they have created a good society and do everything possible to maintain that society. Black people realize that they will never be smart enough/good enough to do anything besides throw a ball through a hoop and keep fried chicken places in business. So, they've decided to do everything they can to ruin the society built by whites.

And, that is why black culture is always attributed to being the cause of crime.

/why the hell you consistently try and make things into racial issues is beyond me

Damn it, DroX. I thought you might've turned a new leaf today. I see now that I was wrong. Why does this have to be a "Oh, so because he was white, he didn't deserve it!?" arguement instead of "That pig was an asshole and a cockfag that needs to be dealt with/The musician was an arrogant prick." arguement. Seriously, man. Do you listen to yourself? You're just grasping at straws here. But since you want to make it somehow about race and culture, let's do it. Here's how it goes. A bunch of white, drunk college kids are listening to a band of white, probably drunk country rockers in a local pub. Neighbor complains about volume, police officer comes in, tells them to take it down a notch. Guitar player turns his music back up as the cop is leaving, cop tries to aprehend the man (both are assholes at this point), and then a drunken honkey brawl breaks out, white people get tasered. Happy now? He was a white country boy raised on Jack Daniels and David Allen Coe. Of course that's probably not true, but for the sake of your arguement, we'll say it is. It's still not relevant to what happened. That's what happens when you combine drunk white people, arrogant musicians, and John Wayne cops.

It seems like this was just a case of asshattery on both sides.

You don't tell someone, regardless of their profession/job, to go fark themselves and suck your dick without expecting a fight.

When you're a cop, you should not be escalating situations and tasering anyone that comes near you. You should possess the discipline not to knock the shiat out of someone that tells you to go fark yourself and to suck their dick.

For the record, I do place more blame on the cop, if the witness accounts from people in the bar are the slightest bit true.

He was attacking random people with a weapon.

Not at all acceptable.

2006-10-16 03:50:34 PM
Gilligann: Even if the cop was being an idiot, why the hell didn't the guy stop playing when he was told to?

Possibly because he was lawfully doing a job that he was being paid to do, in the place that he was paid to do it. As in, playing and entertaining the patrons of the club. If the officer had simply spoken to the manager about the complaint, the situation would have resolved itself non-violently. Attempting to stop the show was wrong. It shows poor judgement skills on the part of the officer. He chose to take a civil violation (noise complaint) and escalate it into a series of criminal violations. Make no mistake, without the direct actions of this officer, this would not have happened. Now I know that all of the officers on this board are going to say, "When you need a cop..." and all of that. But watch the videos, and try to keep in mind that if this guy was your partner, HE may be the reason that you don't get home tonight.

That cop is one stupid incompetant fark if he was so overwhelmingly close to success at the last thing he wanted to do.

I don't rule out the possibility that he's simply a raging moron rather than a thug, but either way I don't think that speaks well for his place on the force.

Of course for the kind of work and the pay, most cops are going to be morons in any case. Unless we want to pay them twice as much to get a substantial number people that have other options to become officers we have to deal with it. As I like high taxes even less than having to deal with some dumbshiat cop now and again... I say keep it as it is, and just eliminate the worst offenders when they pop up - like this asshole.

Until he has a db meter and can prove its too loud...STFU. HE had no way of knowing if it was breaking the noise ordinance. I'm a sound engineer. Very good at what I do. I wouldn't even attempt to try and guess if something was too loud. This asshole just decided it was too loud based on a complaint. That won't get it. When the police decide what is right and wrong based on what they think, the system is in trouble.

If there was a noise disturbance and the sound was too loud, how the fark did the cop even know what the guitarist was saying?

I'd imagine he was saying "What? What?" rather than "Why?" if the volume was as loud as needing a noise complaint.

Either way, terrible cop.

"This cop was real tough pushing over some shrimpy guitar player unexpectedly, but when he starts fighting back and a couple of other people get in the mix - they call for backup."

What would YOU do if you told the guitar player to turn it down and he refuses to obey a command several times. Then as you try to arrest him , you are attacked from behind by a large crowd. I think you don't know because you haven't been in that situation like 9 out of 10 people in here. The problem is that everyone tends to look at these things from the outside with the mindset of 'the pig is on a power trip'. My question to everyone in this thread: where is all of this evidence that you use to support your claims? I watched the video and read the article like you all did. Yet all that's being spilled here is opinion. For some reason, everyone gravitated to the guitarist's story and quote it like fact yet give no creedence whatsoever to the officer's opinion. They just go ahead and say all cops are stupid. Doing this only proves their own stupidity. In law, you are required to look at the totality of the circumstances in all situations. In this situation, as soon as the crowd rushed the cop and attacked him causing him to receive "bruises and cuts on his arms", his arresting the guitarist was out the window and he was legally allowed to defend himself. We don't hear of anyone who was "tasered" having any wounds. That's because a taser does not cause any. Yet the people doing all the crying, are the ones with no wounds who did the attacking. The officer was attacked by a large group of people and judging by what is said by the mindless in this thread, there could have been some in that crowd that would have done more than just scratch him. So he's wrong and the crowd was right? I fail to see the logic. Many of you in this thread, if placed in the same situation, may have started shooting people or even lost control and started crying or something. The fact that the officer had the presence of mind to remove the barbs from the taser and use only the very weak 'stun' option to get people off of him IS commendable. If he were the neanderthal you all say he is, he would have been shooting people. No one wants to address that fact for some reason. If any of you had ever been tasered or stunned by a taser before, you wouldn't be doing any of this whining. It sounds to me like the guitarist should have turned the music down and this would have never happened. If the cop was such a dick, then why didn't he just write a ticket for a loud noise violation and give it to the club owner when he walked in without saying a word. Sounds to me like he gave them a couple of chances to comply and they screwed them up. I'm sure most of you hate cops because you engage in illegal acts or have been caught doing so. Maybe you just think it's cool and feel tough for threatening police over the internet. Whatever your reason, maybe you should relax, take a breath and get away from the computer and out into post-school life before making a life decision.
