Boru didn't fight the vikings, he fought a lesser king who was rebelling against him. In fact, the Vikings fought on both sides, kind of like how the Native Americans fought for both sides in the French and Indian war

Erik: I've been pillaging and maiming up and down the coast.
Damsel: Yes, but what about the raping.

OY! and Charles III (aka "Charles the Fat") and Charles the Simple, would like a word with you. I don't know about you but ransoming Paris by paying 900 lbs of silver, and giving his attacker "permission to pillage Burgundy" looks an awful lot like surrender from where I sit matey. And what else would you call giving Rollo the best half of your kingdom if he promises to fight off any future Viking raiders FOR you.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods
Will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying:
Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green,
Can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war.
We are your overlords.
On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
So now youd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day
Despite of all your losing.

The top third of France is Norse. They got down as far as Dijon in the centre. That's why Normandy is called Normandy.

Once the locals concerted them to Christianity they settled down and took over. Then they invaded England and took it over and ruled it for a few hundred years with William the Conqueror and his sons.

How in the world did those boats survive centuries without being chopped up for firewood some time along the way?

2006-10-16 02:05:42 PM
klatu:

I believe they were found buried bogs or something like they. They were protected until they were found during more modern times.

2006-10-16 02:06:46 PM
make that "buried IN bogs or something like THAT".

Duh. I spoke English good.

klatubaradanikto: How in the world did those boats survive centuries without being chopped up for firewood some time along the way?

1)cultural respect for another man's property,
2)cultral respect for another man's grave,
3)buried in a LOT of mud, which had the effect of sealing off all oxygen, and thus preserving them.

Would you go digging up a casket for firewood? Even a big casket?

tothekor: Duh. I spoke English good.

So did the Vikings...

2006-10-16 02:31:46 PM
The Franks were a Germanic tribe and were not in to this surrendering bullshiat you speak of.

/Just ask the Muslim invaders of Europe about a thousand years ago.

Franks? You're thinking of the Gauls, Subby.

2006-10-16 03:38:57 PM
Pretty sure the Gauls weren't very Gallic when the Vikings rolled around...

ADB is right. Anglo-Saxons > Vikings.

Vikings would only attack unguarded settlements, they fled if Anglo-Saxon warriors were in attendance.

Except, of course, for that one time at Stamford Bridge.
