This guy wants to be profitable selling 138 seats on a big top?

Cheap seats surrender.

EOS Air sells 48 seats on a plane built for 220, and their everyday regular fares are less than British Air.

Actually, EOS doesn't even call them 'seats' they refer to them as 21 sq ft suites. They have fold flat beds, or can be set up with a table for two if you want to have dinner with a travel companion before going to sleep.

That said, he's not going to have the business to support the 'smokers' model over the long haul.

Guy sounds like a hack.

I dunno. I think a lot of smokers who have to fly international will go for something like this.

There are none, he's not going for the economy market, which is a smart move:

SMINTAIR will bring back the joy of flying by offering only 30 first class and 108 business class seats on a "Jumbo Jet", one of the most reliable planes in the World. The upper deck will be the passenger's lounge and not be jammed with seats, as you can sadly find everywhere, nowadays. 70" legroom for business and 80" for first class guests will enhance comfort and privacy.

Plenty of people with more money than sense out there. I bet it works

Actually jets change out the entire volume of air every few minutes, smoke buildup isn't going to be heavy.

Say, do you think they'll have a Reefer International Airways? Once you get over international waters, the beverage cart comes rolling by with a mountain of bud.

"Let's roll"...

"Sir, you are becoming belligerant and federal regulations prevent me from serving alcoholic beverages to an intoxicated passenger. At this time I'm requesting that you take a hit from our beverage cart and mellow out."

2006-10-16 06:08:51 AM
Not a bad idea...

Next thing you know, there will be one targeting the overweight with larger seats and better meals.

/would fly Air Oznog

2006-10-16 06:12:14 AM
This is a pretty good idea. My friends step-dad is a heavy smoker and refuses to fly anywhere that takes longer than two hours because of it. Im sure he will be taking a trip on this airline at somepoint.

2006-10-16 06:14:25 AM
Meh im a smoker but am a light smoker. I can manage a day if flying to the U.s or Europe or where ever. Just dont want to live in the stuff.

Doesnt smoke in his house.

I did hear it said recently that some medical professionals believe DVT to be primarily caused by airlines banning smoking, and thus being able to get away without using the sophisticated (and expensive) systems to recycle air that are necessary when cigarette smoke has to be expelled from the atmosphere. Apparently the low quality of air that passengers are now subjected to makes flying non-smoking far less healthy than flying smoking.

But who knows, there's a new theory about this shiat every day.

Smoking section, please.

There's so much tar in my lungs viruses and bacteria can't get through. Healthy I say. H-E-A-L-T-H-Y!

Stavros go look up "DVT" and look at it's causes before you start spouting out bullshiat.

2006-10-16 06:31:38 AM
Sounds good, except for that whole smoking thing. Even the regular airlines can't seem to stay out of bankruptcy and this guy wants to start one that will cater only to wealthy smokers. Talk about limiting your demographic.

For Sale:
One slightly used wide body passenger airliner
Low hours, all maintenance records, custom interior.
Includes air freshener

Stavros: I did hear it said recently that some medical professionals believe DVT to be primarily caused by airlines banning smoking, and thus being able to get away without using the sophisticated (and expensive) systems to recycle air that are necessary when cigarette smoke has to be expelled from the atmosphere.

There was this activist a number of years back who used to be a flight attendant who was lobbying congress to pass aircraft air quality regulations. She said they shut down the air recirculators in order to save fuel and she had all these respiratory symptoms when they did that.

Well, I heard her on this radio program and they had a call-in guest who was totally familiar with the air recirculation system on the plane involved. He said that by design the air volume will change out completely in four mintues regardless of whether you're running one or both compressors. Actually what happens is the front of a jet engine is a fan which compresses the air in front of where the fuel is injected, at this point there's just a port. It's a VERY well designed system. Sometimes pilots will shut down one of the compressor inlets, mostly for some sort of maintenance reason, and it won't adversely affect the flow rate. Basically he discredited her entire belief system without even addressing her issues specifically.

"Well, I can't comment on your condition, but I can say for sure that the air in the crew cabin will be changed out every four minutes."

b-b-but fois gras?

2006-10-16 06:41:57 AM
Oh hey look, there are so many questions about air recirculation on passenger airlines that there's a Wikipedia entry for it

Bottom line, airlines do not cut back on fresh air to save money. Aircraft design won't even allow them to do it.

Air conditioning while you're waiting on the tarmac, that's another story. Sometimes they cut back on that and let passengers stew.

Finally a plane that if it crashes, we can say "woohoo!"!

2006-10-16 06:42:55 AM
Hmmm. I smoke and I fly from Europe to the States at least twice a year. I would LOVE to be able to smoke on a plane, but you won't see me paying 10k to do it.

Ill just continue to run over the security people in the airports during my layovers.

(from TFA)He says he's got investors willing to provide $81 million to get started - including the $50 million he'll need to get a license from the German government - and sponsors ready to sell luxury goods on board.

A $50 million business license? Remind me never to do business in Germany.

The biggest thing everyone seems to be missing is that even if this guys airline works and makes money, there are very few routes in the world that he can fly. The United States for one could never be a destination as the FAA won't allow any smoking flights land in the US. I belive there are more countires out there with the same regulations, but am too tired to research it this morning.

If I ever fly to Tokyo i'll definatly be flying via Dusseldorf... if thats where it was, I've already forgotten the article. Flights to Tokyo already come in at over £1k for a good one, and I can't see these being much more expensive, and at least i'll be able to smoke, it's an awful long flight. So worth it.

gd1147
Why wont they let smoking flights land? Seems a bit harsh to me, and thats without even going into jokes about planes with smoking coming out the engine.

Yeah, tell me about it. I got smoked under the table by a Japanese foreign exchange student. I didn't even know getting smoked under the table was possible...

So, does their frequent flyer program let you exchange miles for rooms at the Mayo Clinic?

2006-10-16 07:31:48 AM
Back when I was a smoker, I remember flying between the US and Europe many times in the smoking days. As soon as the wheels were up, you'd hear the "click, click, click" of thirty lighters as the smokers lit up. Back then, on a 9-hour flight, I could easily fill both ashtrays in the armrests. I can't imagine how awful it was for the non-smokers in the front of the plane.

2006-10-16 07:34:23 AM
Anytime you see an airline STARTING with a 747, one of the most expensive aircraft to operate, maintain, and fill then your going to have problems. EOS and MaxJet fly 757s which is quite a different model then flying 747s. Also, the fact the entire upperdeck will be a "shopping area", not a wise move. I predict it will not even start service let alone generate any sort of profit.

Also, he made mention of the cargo revenue between Germany and Tokyo. Lufthansa will rip you a new one if you try to muscle in on cargo revenue.

2006-10-16 07:39:57 AM
I agree with Weaver95. There is definitely a market for this. Nicotene gum/water and patches just don't do the trick, especially if you are flying long hours.

I'm pretty sure he means it doesn't exist on his plane because the air filtration is so good. Not that I'd believe that either.

A market for this? Bollocks. Suck my cock.

Aah, but wait, what's that in the distance? Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

NO! It's the sound of a billion dumbass drug addicts suing the airline that made them smoke and gave them lung cancer.

I give it six months.

Smoking on planes was fun. The buzz I could get was enjoyable.

2006-10-16 07:52:40 AM
I pay more for tickets just for the legroom as of last year. I'd pay a little extra for a smoking lounge.

> /gd1147 is right - Smoking is banned on flights in many,
> many countries. USA and Canada included...

gd1147 (and you) are wrong.

*cough*

"Smoking is banned by statute on almost all U.S. domestic flights, and is prohibited by international agreement on nonstop flights operated by Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and U.S. carriers between their territories. The vast majority of smoking bans on international flights serving the United States are the result of voluntary action by airlines, with encouragement by the U. S. Government."

2006-10-16 07:58:16 AM
Smoking is banned because non-smokers are biatch-ass whiners.

I was standing in line once, for a costco hot dog. Someone in another line was smoking a cigarette. The girl in front of him turned around and LOUDLY said, "I find your smoking offensive"

To which he responded, "I find your loud mouth offensive."

She left.

/HAHA Good times.
