Apparently nobody found it offensive, although I remember even at that age I found it in hilariously poor taste, particularly since such a significant quantity of black on black crime was perpetrated on and by students there.

My saddest high school memory was when the DARE police band Hot Pursuit came to an assembly to teach us all about the evils of drug use and abuse, and they played Mony Mony, and everyone yelled "Get laid get farked!" And then Hot Pursuit stopped playing and said we were all vulgar, ignorant, and rude and they were never coming back to our school ever again.

And I don't doubt the sheet music exists at all. You can get sheet music for ANYTHING if the copyright holders are happy to have you pay them so you can play their song at a high school football game.

I had something similar happen to me.

I worked as a longtime sub in a Detroit school. On free days I'd play music that the kids requested. I was always sure to find only raido edits and even then go for the Nsync/sugar pop that was popular.

However, many of the kids wanted Eminem. Not really a good idea for a classroom. However, I was able to get a hold of an instrumental of one of his songs. I figured...hey, no words...can't get in trouble.

Wrong. A parent complained when they heard it. They said it was inappropriate music. I explained that there were no words in an instrumental (I thought that would be obvious), so there wasn't anything that shouldn't be heard. However, they were upset that their kid knew the lyrics. I told them it wasn't from me...but they didn't seem to get it.

I dunno. Why don't we let the people decide? That's what democracy is all about anyway. You can spend your own money on any music you want. When you spend taxpayer money, however, you must be open to the criticism of the people. For the moment, it is up to the school board and administration to decide. Ultimately, the voters decide. Most administrators and board members welcome voter input because they want to be responsive to the will of the community (and keep their jobs.)

Fascinating stuff, that. Went with an old roomate to see a competiton in Denver once and have worked various regional competitions with him over the years video and audio taping them. Always an interesting gig.

That's fine. Except, you'll wind up with the band playing things like Sousa marches and patriotic music all the time, and eventually you won't have a band. Or at least, you won't have a band that anyone cares to come hear, because all the people who can play will be somewhere else playing things they want to play. It's a question of relevance, not taste. Also, if you bend to the will of the community, you may not have a band at all. They community may decide that it's just too much trouble to even fark with. The will of the community often times means the lowest common denominator and you know what that means. shiat for all.

When I was in marching band we played Time Warp from Rocky Horror in the stands at football games. No one gave a shiat, and that was in the middle of nowhere in Texas. Then again my mother was the one teaching the cheerleaders and drill team how to do the time warp.

We also played My Sharona, and at the time I was trying to figure out how we got away with it. I expected someone to freak out that we were playing something with lyrics like "Such a dirty mind. Always get it up for the touch of the younger kind."

I'm not going to bother reading all your post because it's obvious you STILL didn't get it and judging from your interest in the marching band you're probably a pretty nice kid in high school who's only caught a temporary case of the teenage stupids. That happens to almost all of us at some point.

It's been a long day and I've only got a couple cans of rhetorical whoopass left and I might need them if I encounter a more deserving target later.
