Around here, you get 3 free days with out a valid excuse (ie. not sick) after that they'll start to come after you. Is this his first offense? Or, is this his 4th dead dog?

They need to teach him to stop being a nancy boy.

charmed1782: This kid should stop being such a nancy.

and

bboy: There are actually truancy officers?

He misses one day with a call from the parents to say he wasn't going to be there and they still sent truancy officers??? WTF?!

Also, I missed plenty of days during school without a parent calling in for me and never once had anyone call, much less show up at my house to find out where I was. What's with the schools in Liverpool?

Lastly, I remember missing about a full week of school when my grandmother died. When I came back one of the mean chicks asked me in a taunting way, "Why were you out for so long? Did your grandmother die?" The look on her face when I answered in a quiet "yes." was friggin priceless. I don't think she said three words to me for the rest of the year.

You people who are criticizing someone for taking a day off to mourn a pet are stupid farking automitons. I'll bet you make great corporate slaves.

I can't remember a single day of school, except maybe semester tests, where anything so important happened that I couldn't take a day off.

2006-10-12 03:55:00 PM
wow, i am glad my school wasn't that dedicated to its poorly funded program.

Executive Monkey:

The only excuse for missing even an hour of school is incapacitating illness, war, or a natural disaster that either kills the kid or destroys the school. I am sure everyone who has been through an education will agree with me that there is no way you can miss even an hour of instruction and hope to ever catch up.

My sarcasm detector is going off like gangbusters reading this.

I'll admit that if my pet dog had died while I was still I'd have probably taken the day off, myself. However, I also would have asked for any assignments/reading material to be forwarded to me so I wouldn't get behind.

/ She died the day before easter a few years ago while I was attending university
// Parents put her down while I was out at a friend's place because she had stopped eating.
/// Didn't tell me until I called the next day
//// Still PO'ed at them -- I wanted to be there. I loved that mutt.

Getting a chuckle out of all the people who don't realize this is in the UK, not the US.

Meshnoob, what's worse - taking a day off for a beloved pet dieing, or a society that sends truancy officers for missing a single day of class?

/I pick option B

I hope the kid learned his lesson. Next time you need a day off for any reason, lie and say you're sick.

2006-10-12 03:57:32 PM
I used to take days off from school because I felt like it. Parent would write up the infamous "Stomach Virus" excuse. Big deal.

Skail

I usually take a day off when I lose a pet. It sucks, particularly if you're very attached to the pet.

I hate people, so I like to have a pet around. I get more upset over a cherished pet's passing that a person's (immediatey family excluded).

Damn skippy I'm with you. Losing a cat sucks. Having to put it down is worse.

I think that may not be because you hate people. I think that, as people, we are desensitized to strangers dying that we are just not phased by it.

Meh, just an opinion. I see what you're saying, though.

One time, I stayed home from school because I could. Take that municipal school district. You can't push me around. I ain't no nancy boy from the UK.

I can be tough too.

I had this happen to me twice last year (actually three times- we had four; one went from cancer and the other two from old age. One was 22. But twice when school got in the way.) The first died at about 2 AM and I had to go to class that same morning. I made the attempt, despite getting virtually no sleep, but it just wasn't happening. I headed home early.

Long story short: Everybody in this thread calling 'nancy boy' and meaning it, I hereby request that you STFU.

And to think, I took two weeks in November off from the time I was 12 until I finished high school to go up deer hunting...

\Never got in trouble for it.
\\Learned more in two weeks with my dad than 2 months of sitting in school.

In this man's warped little mind, he thought that what we were doing was lying to our parents. He thought that we had told them that we were going to the game, and instead wondered off 3 blocks to get pizza... My friends and I were of the metalhead varity, we didn't do school games. Or games of any sort for that matter. So he had the Pizza shop owner call him up to let him know if middle school kids were in there on game days- lying to their parents.
He just didn't like that fact that in the end of it all, our parents are telling him to "STFU, Our kids are not the sort to lie, nor are they the sort to join in any school activities."

No, seriously. This kid is a nancy boy.

Maybe because he's a child and perhaps this is the first time he's ever experienced a lost of this kind? Give him a break.

Interestingly, if you work at PetSmart, staying home from work because your pet died is a valid excuse.

I'm with ya there. One cat died in my arms and that sucked. Having to put the other one (her mother) down was far worse. That coming on the heels of my own mother dying made for a not fun time.

Mushi-shi:"Interestingly, if you work at PetSmart, staying home from work because your pet died is a valid excuse."

It would be the height of irony (not to mention funny in a sick sort of way) if that wasnt the case.

Oh and CapeFearCadaver, thanks for the explanation. yeah, ive known some principles like that. If your parents were the litigatious type they probably could have sued the pizza shop owner for calling the principle too.

What the hell was he thinking, staying home from school over a dead dog.
