If women are forced to resort to prostitution to pay for college, what are men forced to do to pay for college?

In the US, 58% of college students are now female, only 42% are male. I guess the men are forced to drop out of college altogether. Lucky women, having the prostitution option!

You know, in a trully terrible twist of fate, I actually remained a virgin in every way until after I dropped out of college.

/Probably best that way. My two closest friends who didn't--went through much grief.

students now in their first year could expect to graduate with liabilities of more than £14,700.

$27,000??? That's chump change... Hell, there are plenty of students here in the States that end up with more than that after 1 year, nevermind 4.

Students here don't start sweating until the principle starts inching towards 6 digits...

Try paying $37,000/yr for 4 years.

Yeah, it hurts, when you're not poor enough to get financial aid, but not rich enough to be able to afford to pay your bills. Welcome to the life of the middle class.

On a tangental topic, some folks are concerned lately that men are being 'left behind' because women are going to college so much more nowadays, that they are under-represented.

I disagree. IIRC, the rates of college attendance have been going up for both genders in the past few decades, just faster for women. So you could look at it as that women are over-represented in college, ie, too many go.

Personally I think it's a waste, as women can be found in high concentrations in the useless majors that don't increase your earnings (ie, most anything in the liberal arts college of a university).

Are these particular women going because they feel they have to? Are they going because they subconsciously (or consciously) are actually looking for a "Mrs." Degree from a guy with actual earning potential?

Any opinions?

I listen to a particular radio show that gives financial advice. Time and time again, some couple calls in with $100,000+ in education debt and only one income.

Why? They both became doctors or lawyers, but then the lady decided to be a stay-at-home mom, essentially wasting that expensive education and having much of that debt for no gain, except a husband with high earning potential who also now shares in that debt.

I've got nothing against women doctors or lawyers, and nothing against stay at home moms. I'm just saying that if these women (and a lot of them call into this show with this situation) could have figured out what they wanted to do a little earlier, they could have saved a whole lot of money.

Oy, tell me about it.

What's worse? Your *parents* are just rich enough that you don't get financial aid, but *you* are the one who has to pay for everything.

Not fun, lemme tell you.

I'm paying $32k/yr for my wife to go to vet school - so she can do conservation research and make $56k/yr. After taxes, that $56k leaves one with pennies if the $32k were to be taken out year per year. Note also the opportunity costs; she was making ~$50k before, now she's making zero (she's at school up to 16 hours a day. no time for a job).

The reason little work is done in conservation is because it's farkin expensive to get a relevant degree, and the pay barely pays your student loan payments. So anyone that wants to do it has to find someone who will put them through school. Some chump like me.

Note that this might also explain why more women are taking professional degrees; culturally we're not quite ready for women to be putting men through college on a regular basis.

And screw you old folks who think people are whining. The $4k deduction for tuition on taxes might have worked when soda was a nickel, but $4k is only 12% of her farkin tuition. Thanks for the token gesture, IRS.

I'd just like, in closing, to thank Clinton for upholding the promise he made during both his elections - the free tuition thing. Thanks, Bill!

You are all missing the key economic lesson from this. If we reduce the amount of money available for financial aid, more female students will have to resort to prostitution. This glut of supply will lower what can be charged for services rendered. So...lots of cheap co-ed hookers! What is the problem with that?

/ wasn't an econ major

I went for the sake of a classical education and to have the degree I would need to help support myself. While I have seen girls go thru college to get their "Mrs.", I do not have a problem with it, per se - first off, most of them will not become housewives, they will be working to support their family same as their husband. For those that do become housewives, the education and degree are valuble 1. b/c if your wife is the primary caregiver, wouldn't you prefer that your children be raised by a woman with a good education, particularly as they get older? And wouldn't you yourself prefer to have a partner who can have an intelligent conversation with you? And 2. Shiat happens - divorces, accidents, terminal illnesses, lay-offs, etc. In those cases, the housewife may have to step up and take over providing for the family, temporarily or even permanently. Hard enough to do when you have been out of the workforce for a while, even harder without a degree.

Why? They both became doctors or lawyers, but then the lady decided to be a stay-at-home mom, essentially wasting that expensive education and having much of that debt for no gain, except a husband with high earning potential who also now shares in that debt.

It would help if people didn't still cling to the bass-akwards notions that woman=caregiver/man=breadwinner. Or better yet, why don't men make changes to stay at home and care for their families a little bit as well, rather than making the woman give up her career? A little meeting halfway, so to speak? I am as baffled by this continuing phenomenon as you are, although probably for different reasons. ;)

If men stayed home and took care of the babies, they'd drop the baby on the head, teach bad habits etc etc.

I think it's backwards to think men and women only differ in the sex organs and nothing else.

I agree halfway is good but it's a bad idea to fight our innate forces.

TheSilverOne: Yeah, it's called joining a sorority.

I know it is a joke and blah blah, but joining a sorority and being a sister is extremely, extremely expensive. That's why those girls are all so pretty -- only rich, typically white girls, join sororities. I'm from the south, my sister is the secretary in her sorority and she drops almost four figures on that damn group every year. Between fees and dues and social functions and alcohol intake, it is an expensive thing to be apart of.

The lucky part is that she has made such a complex social network she'll have countless connections to get a really good job.

I don't know about India but... your average american teenage girl is an aspiring hooker (witness the popularity of Paris Hilton with this age group).

Drive around in a big mercedes or similar for a while and you'll realize how many adult american women have fully accomplished their youthful goals.

/And yes, I'm sure guys are just as bad - but I don't date them so I don't notice as much.

If you live in America, and are too stupid to attend college for free, you really are too stupid to attend. The system doesn't just work for the rich, it works for the enterprising as well. I have two degrees, a B.A. and a B.S., and have never paid more than the cost of books. Used books at that.

Do a little research, or at least associate with the ones who have. There are a million different ways, you just need to find *one*.

I was so sure this was going to be about women in India not being able to get any other jobs, and forced to take up prostitution... but it turns out that it's about the UK. So, to paraphrase this article, these women are taking up prostitution because it pays better than working at
McDonald's?

/no sympathy
// "resorting" to prostitution in order to avoid £3000 a year in fees? Somebody needs to give these girls a reality check.

Stumbleine: I'm from the south, my sister is the secretary in her sorority and she drops almost four figures on that damn group every year

So, it costs her less than $1000 a year? When I was in university, I was spending more than that on booze every 3 months or so!

Where did I say we were the same? Men and women have different approaches, but men are no less capable of raising children then women...in some cases, the man would be a better choice. Go to any Fark divorce thread and you will see countless *male* farkers insisting this as well. Saying all/most men will just drop a baby on it's head, teach them "bad" habits...don't have a very high opinion of men, do you? And this is coming from the girl who dropped her sister's baby on it's head a couple times herself...sometimes, we girls just aren't suited for the childrearing thing. I'm not saying we need to completely switch social roles here, but it weirds me out to see men constantly reduced to the role of mere breadwinner in this day and age.

Too bad? get a bunch of them together and the DVD sales will pay those tickets and then some!

Interesting that people think college is only about preparing yourself for the highest paying job possible, though. I always thought it was about enriching yourself intellectually...

CouldaWouldShoulda

My brother-in-law says that too, "baby-sitting". It speaks a lot about his mindset; he has confided to me that he wishes my sister would work, so he could spend time actually raising his kids, b/c right now, he really feels like "babysitting" is what he does, and she does the actual rearing. Your kids are really lucky to have an actual father around.

Sex is a normal biological function. Getting money is a normal economic activity. But put them together and suddenly a lot of people get excited and call it "prostitution".

There is nothing inherently wrong with prostitution.

To be opposed to it is the same mindset as demanding that females remain virgins until they are married. It makes no sense.

The majority of the prostitutes in the US are white, middle class women who have never been arrested. They have no more than average problems with alcohol and drugs, work for themselves, and many hold second jobs. Many are married.

Most prostitutes are not "career" prostitutes. They do it just to get some money quick either for debts or to get something more expensive than they can usually afford. They DO NOT streetwalk. Often they work out of their home or apartment.

Their clientele are hand-picked, and may number fewer than a half dozen. In turn, these men may not even consider that they are "johns". They just think they are "dating", and giving "gifts". She is their "lady friend", and they are just as likely to take her out to dinner, a nice nightclub, or some other pleasant entertainment, as they are to stay in and have sex.

American society is full of prostitutes. Only the dregs, druggie alcoholic streetwalkers are ever seen, though. Probably less than 5% of the total. The authorities would prefer it if people didn't see the rest.
