He's lived in this country for 30 years and he still sounds like he left Austria yesterday. If you're going to tell someone to assimilate, do it in an American accent.

jimmyhaha: He's lived in this country for 30 years and he still sounds like he left Austria yesterday.

it's part of his persona. i'd be willing to bet money he either talks without much of an accent at home or spent money on a trainer to teach him to talk with the accent he has.

I have trouble giving him crap for suggesting that others make the same sacrifices he and countless other immigrants have already made.

That refusal to assimilate has already sapped most of the potential support away from the immigrants rights movement. They would do well do rethink their position before the door REALLY slams shut.

"...He really seems to have a misunderstanding about how Mexican immigrants see themselves and their place in this country."

No he sees it very clearly. They refuse to learn the host country's language and think they have a right to fly the flag of another sovereign nation. If they have no intention of embracing the language and culture of the host country they should get the fark out.

Not every Mexican who comes here is not fluent in english (check out my double negative). I'm sure if I up and moved to a foreign country I would have some trouble learning the language too.

Hell I took 7 years of Spanish from elementary to high school and I can't even order Taco Bell. Give the poor Mexicans a break.

The problem isn't that they aren't assimilating, it is that they aren't assimilating fast enough in most areas.

Around the 1900s, there were Italian, German, Jewish, Polish, etc etc etc enclaves. Kinda like walking into [any majro city's] China Town.

You notice how this whole illegal immigration thing is centered around spanish speaking peoples? What about all those illegal Asians? They aren't assimilating either.

That's funny, Asian culture has ALWAYS been about assimilation. That's one of the bigger points in that whole confucian thing. I have relatives that can't even speak their native tongue (the one they grew up speaking) any more. Accented-english and American names are all they've got now. Wing Keung? Nope, that's Edward to you.

How's that for assimilation?

Give it time. Immigrant groups take a while to assimilate, to break further from their own culture into the one they've adopted. Hell, there are still parts of Boston that may as well be Ireland, as there are parts of New York that may as well be Italy. Or Puerto Rico. Each generation that stays in a certain country becomes more and more integrated into that society, whether it be Latinos in Cali, Jews in New York or Turks in Sweden. Hell, I've assimilated about as much as I'm going to in Sweden, and I'm still very American. My children, on the other hand...

noneoftheabove: That's funny, Asian culture has ALWAYS been about assimilation. That's one of the bigger points in that whole confucian thing.

That's true. Confucian mentality in the truest form encourage assimilation to other cultures as well as perserving one's own culture. Ying and yang harmony.

jimmyhaha He's lived in this country for 30 years and he still sounds like he left Austria yesterday.

Hardly. The man has an accent as thick as molasses, but that is part of his mystique. Otherwise his language skills are about as capable as any native speaker. You see him neither stutter nor pause to recall words.

On the other hand, half of the Latino landscapers, laborers and construction workers I've met here in Phoenix metro can't rub two English words together. I've lost count at the number of times I've tried to say something to a Latino and all I get back is a dull stare.

Hell, it is so bad that I've had to post "Ninguna solicitación - ninguna violación" on my front door in order to counter the number of Latino solicitors that tape junk to my house.

noneoftheabove That refusal to assimilate has already sapped most of the potential support away from the immigrants rights movement. They would do well do rethink their position before the door REALLY slams shut.

It is beyond that. You cannot garner support when you insult and demonize the people who might help you.

There was tremendous backlash here in Phoenix after the local news channels showed live coverage of millions of Latinos demonstrating in the streets, waving flags of their homelands, chanting anti-American and anti-Caucasian slogans, wearing t-shirts claiming "Aztlán! Reconquista!" and assaulting counter-protestors.

Now the largest issue for the November election is not the Iraq war, it is border security and amnesty. It is such an overriding issue that a local Representative, J. D. Hayworth, is still leading the polls despite accusations of funneling $100K of PAC money to his wife.

Dinjiin

I was trying to be nice about it, but you're right. A year ago, no one gave a damn about building a wall or any of that nonsense. But you get an army of folks screaming in the streets that they're entitled to shiat on U.S. law and the mainstream culture, and public goodwill turns sour mighty quick.

America has always been less about where you come from but whether you buy into the idea of America. Most immigrants choose to buy into the program. Believe it or not freedom still means alot. Free to think, free to associate, freedom from want. They are not just words, and we all take it much to much for granted.

However, those who choose to come here, and choose to flaunt the flags of others; to have allegiances of convenience should reconsider there reasons for being here.

Most Mexicans are hard working people who are trying to escape grinding poverty, and live the dream for themselves and their familes.

The world is becoming a smaller and smaller place everyday. That does that mean that our borders should be open to all those who choose to make the journey.

The federal government has chose inaction for too long, and our government must control the flow of people across those borders.

We are a national built from the strength of those who choose to come here, but we must choose who is allowed to be part of this once grand experiment in democracy.

I really like the latino's they are as a group really nice people! HOWEVER ! There always has to be an achilles heel you know.
I was reading a bit of history and it seems with this socialist kick coming down in all of Latin America including Mexico history says as a group they are easily conquered by outside influence [ they lay down quickly it seems ].
Some examples are a small number of Spanish defeated their far superior numbers mostly by selective killing of leaders and getting some groups to fight against their own.
The converting to Christianity quickly at the expense of religions thousands of years old and so forth to smaller but things and now communist socialism .

2006-10-07 08:46:19 AM
Mexicans have really farked up.

I'm a life long liberal and i was always on their side. Then they started to flood into this country like it was theirs. I know all kinds of Americans construction workers out of work cause they have been replaced by Latinos.

I'll never eat in a mexican restaurant for the rest and if i can fark with a mexican i will never pass up the opportunity.

Mexicans need to learn some manners. Driving down wages in the country you are immigrating to is the ultimate in bad behavior.

>> I was reading a bit of history and it seems with this socialist kick coming down in all of Latin America including Mexico

That is fantastic. They really love their socialist leader in venezuela too (Chavez). He has had extremely high approval ratings for years now. More than twice shrubs approval rating.

This is an instance where i love what Latinos are doing. They are not fleeing. They are staying home and fixxing their country.

Bravo.

Professor Melissa Michelson, political analyst, said, "I think he put his foot, his ankle and his entire lower leg in his mouth. He really seems to have a misunderstanding about how Mexican immigrants see themselves and their place in this country."

How do they view their place in this country? Come on prof you can't just go about attacking what someone said and now offer up a counter point.

I think the mexicans under-estimated how much shiat they can get away with before the majority of America gets pissed off. Raising the Mexican flag on an American post office is an act of war and a violation of US sovreignty.

I think he only spoke truth to a power-block.

Irish immigrants (say) as a rule didn't vote in
old-country elections or go around tearing down
US flags to hoist Irish ones.

If you're coming here because it's better than where
you came from it always seemed a bit stupid (IMHO)
to want to remake here into the place you left.

2006-10-07 02:38:45 PM
It's pretty amazing really, for years the politicians have been pandering to a group that doesn't even have the right to vote because they have been rapidly growing. Finally they realized that pandering to hispanics is pissing off the majority. The very ironic thing is that hispanics brought the issue to the front of the majority's minds by marching with Mexican flags, signs stating things like "today we march, tomorrow we vote" and "this is stolen land". They expected the majority who are caucasians to respond well to "go back to Europe"?

I think his point was that Asians aren't stupid enough to march and piss off most of the country, believing that they will intimidate the people here with "El pueblo unido jamas sera vencido", well little message for you, your pueblo is wayyyy smaller than the rest of the population and pissing them off is not getting you anywhere.

And Asians are not anywhere the majority that Hispanics are.

This thread is pretty much dead, but I'll leave with one final point.

As you said, there ARE a bunch of illegal asians running around the states (nowhere near the same numbers, but still...) -- so why is it no one's up in arms about them? Well it could just be the numbers, but that's probably an oversimplification. What are the asians doing that the latinos aren't?

When was the last time you saw a cavalcade of asian women at the emergency room and food bank, wrangling for every last ounce of free shiat they can get their hands on to support the seven kids they squeezed out rapid fire the minute they set foot stateside? When was the last time you saw an asian blasting zither and flute music while parading a foreign flag around? When was the last time you heard the asians protesting for the schools and government to provide free translation services, because they aren't ready to learn the language yet?

The chinese have a simple philosophy when it comes to immigration: If you don't look like you belong, then STFU and work like hell until you do. Since they've been doing the immigrant thing longer than anyone else, I'm going to defer to experience on this one.

Well they DIDN'T march for rights....

Nicely put!

Well there you go...and the Chinese aren't the only ones. There are many others, Indians are insanely successful, Japanese, Korean, British, Canadian (the French kind) and I know many Muslims who are from Afghanistan and Pakistan (not to mention other Muslim countries) who are very successful.

But Mexicans come to this country and what happens? They don't have to really assimilate. Everything I deal with there is an option for Spanish. Call some line and the first thing you have to do is select between English and Spanish.

For me this is the common "leg up" misconception. You think that giving them a little bit of assistance will make them more succesful. I don't think so, I think that to be succesful you need to be able to work inside the system beyond going through a touch tone system.

2006-10-08 02:13:09 AM
I was talking to this cook at this Japanese steakhouse(but he wasn't Japanese) and he was telling me that he barely remembers his own language anymore. He said that he never took any English classes or anything and it took him a while to learn English, but he speaks it excellently now.
Then he started dissing people who come to this country and refuse to assimilate, which was made very funny because there was a Mexican women at the table(who could speak English), but whose daughter only spoke Spanish.

2006-10-08 02:52:10 AM
I am Irish therefore I don't get offended about my heritage. I don't think it's possible since all of the stereotypes are true.

I wish we had 2 asian immigrants for every 1 mexican immigrant.

At least Asians (tend!) to have a sense of dignity and work ethic.

Witness the Korean business store owners reacting to the riots.
