It's just WAAAY too much fun in here today.

/good thing it wasn't a Blazing Saddles reference, huh? ;-)
//'scuse me while I whip this out

Asteron,

LOL ... you really aught to read up on the history of the region so you can realize how ridiculous that statement is.

I'm well aware of the bad blood between Japan and China.

I'm also well aware that most people can recognize the difference between a jab in jest and a mean-spirited attack.

I'm aware that people might be sensitive to jokes for a while after something bad happens to them. I'm probably not going to quote lines from Deliverance to some dude who was just butt-plundered.

But, and most people will agree, this article and the amusing tag it most definitely deserved, is nothing to get worked up about :)

heap: i guess even a beating across the brow with the humor stick isn't going to diffuse your indignation.

He wasn't making a joke, he was completely serious.

If I see a random black person and I say "Watermelon" and she says no and I say "What, but you black people are always eating that shiat!", I'm just cracking jokes? And there's no such things as racist jokes?

Tatsuma: How is this NOT about racism/discrimination?

because she was a daffy biatch, and going off on a multi-comment tangent over the usage of a 54x11px gif describing that daffyness is about as transparent of a soapbox as you're going to find?

How are we "injecting" racism and discrimination into a story about a bar not letting in a woman because she looked jewish?

So, that negates both the headline and the article saying that she was believed to be jewish?

How can I be racist, I've got Jewish/Black/Mexican/Chinese friends!

I was only saying that this does not look like the case of racism that nutjobwoman claims it is.

Ugh. Ok then, I give up, obviously this is a clear-cut case of racism and they are barring all Jews from the premises *except* for the ones that work there. Happy now?

i was. i was not referring to the comment you received, but my statement, and your inability to even acknowledge humor in favor of pulpit pounding.

Tatsuma,

people saying discrimination is funny

Discrimination can be funny.

Blazing Saddles is a perfect example of that.

Yeah, but they get the "Call Lightning" spell at 5th level, while Mormons only get the so-so feat "Invest with Wisdom", which is a crock, since Wisdom isn't their primary stat.

Persepolis: mrsirjojo: Wait, so the article makes it clear that she was not allowed in because she was taken for Jewish, specifically, or because, being taken for Jewish, she was therefore not a Druid?

Fark headline: Melbourne bar wouldn't let in a Druid priestess because she looks Jewish

Article Summary from the article: A SELF-PROFESSED druid priestess has said a Melbourne bar refused to let her in because of her age and the mistaken belief that she was Jewish.

Why don't you re-read what I wrote...more slowly, if it helps.

Tatsuma: This is a story about a bar not letting a woman enter because they thought she was Jewish

How is this NOT about racism/discrimination?

No, this is a story about a woman claiming that despite most facts.

She wasn't prevented from entering the nightclub because she "looked jewish".

She wasn't allowed into the nightclub at 1.30 in the morning. Then when she got mouthy with the bouncers both sides made presumptions about the others religious background. The bouncer asked if her necklace was a jewish symbol and she told him she was a pagan and presumed that as he was an islander (or maori or whatever) that he was one too.

Then she did a ritual and they all laughed at her.

Nobody here is saying it's ok to be anti semitic.

She's a pissed off attention whore trying to deflect from the fact that she's a terrible mother who lets her 15 year old son go to bars until the wee hours.

2006-10-05 12:07:08 PM
Persepolis, I think it's amusing that you are all about fighting discrimination, and yet you are quick to denounce an entire country in your Boobies without even reading the article. If you'd read it you would notice that while the woman claims religious discrimination, the guard disagrees. Given the other kooky things the woman said it's far more likely she made that up, too.

I'm going to assume you made a sarcastic post-modern comment about ignorance in the Western societies and how it translate into asinine comments destined toward the wrong individuals, rather than you being completely farking ignorant.

Yes, you can be sarcastic without using slashes to explain. Plus its funny to see people flip out if they believe what you say.

I did read the article, and my Boobies still stands. I didn't say ALL australians are racist. I didn't say the country of australia is a racist country. I said, I've heard of issues before of a problem with horrible discrimination (even leading to violence) there, so it's not entirely shocking.

Much like, I hate it when people say all muslims are terrorists, but I understand that when say a jewish temple blows up, that people wouldn't be suprised if a muslim did it.

I'm just throwing out my opinion here. I would have been long gone from this thread if people just let is stand, but people keep asking us to redefine what we're saying, or trying to refute what we're saying.

Joey Jeremiah: I'm going to be in Montreal this weekend. So, um, where in Montreal should I go so I can share in this fun?

Pretty much anywhere, actually.

If you want REAL fun, though, try it outside Montreal. Quebec City, for example, is demographically 99% white, french-canadian and catholic, according to newspapers. According to the same survey, 30% of the people in Quebec City think there are too many immigrants in their town.

You'd have a ball. And Quebec is open-minded compared to the backwater regions.

mrsirjojo: What I said was, how can you prove. or why have you assumed, she was not allowed in the bar because she was Jewish, rather than simply a non-Druid?

Again, read the headline here, then read the summary sentence in the article.

And either way, either she was thought to be jewish, or thought to be a non druid. She was denied access to the bar because of her percieved religion. how is that not discrimination?

When racists can't get their races right, it's funny.

If I'm walking down the street and somebody yells at me, calling me a dirty ni**er, I'm going to laugh my ass off and then proceed to call and tell my friends so they can laugh as well.

I don't even think this is some kind of 'all-Druid lounge'.

Oh yeah, and Joey, when someone tells you "the town's black family", they literally mean the only black family in town.

testify: "Semitic" encompasses both Arabs and Jews, so actually people here regularily say its okay to be anti-semitic. Have we had our two minute Iran hate today yet?

I see what you're saying. But the fact remains he could have gotten it right. In other words, yeah the dude who called you a nubian is stupid, but he could have said that to a real black person (And in your case, he thought he did)

It's still discrimination, I think it's based on intent, not accuracy.

Tatsuma:
A few days ago, I was minding my business and someone yelled "Dirty jew!" to me. So, according to you, it's acceptable since there was no physical violence and it was not a mob around me screaming it, just two guys in a car?

No, not particularly acceptable. Happened to me a few times too though, and in the US I thought it was pretty funny. When I was a kid in the USSR however, getting pushed around and having shiat whispered in my ear all the damn time for years on end wasn't very funny.

All I'm saying is, there is a fundumental difference. In one setting, making fun of someone over looking Jewish is no different from making fun of them over being tall or short. In another, it may be abusive in all the worst ways. One doesn't lead to the other. Europe got antisemetic because a visible ethnic minority was introduced into a racial homogeny, not because people failed to curtail any particular sort of behavior. 600 years later, they're having the same reaction to the latest arab migration.

The US is very ethnically and religiously diverse. There is one prevailing homogeny however, and it's heterosexuality. Which makes that my one "dude, this shiat isn't funny" exception.

Tatsuma [TotalFark]

Christ this pisses me off. Anti-Semetic is not the antonym of semetic.

Strictly speaking, it is. Against Shem. It matters not a whit that the common parlance has changed it into something racial, not that, as I mentioned, there is any real racial difference between an average Arab and an average Jew.

But hey, don't let that stop your beard in the sky telling you all to battle it out, or waste stunning amounts of time debating the finer points of the Zohar.

/lol

Cheeseburger: Is being an ass a religion?

No, just a side effect. Still, she alleges discrimination. And apparently it's a valid enough complaint to warrent the australian government to look into it.

2006-10-05 12:20:58 PM
She was denied access to the bar because she made an ass out of herself. Obviously a 51-year old woman who can perform an "evoking the guardians" ritual in front of other adults with a straight face has serious mental issues. Clubs discriminate against old people and people who don't seem "cool." I'm pretty sure this lady fit both categories. Discrimination my ass. This deserves the > tag.

But, he didn't.

If a bunch of Neo-nazis try to fire-bomb a synagogue but accidentally blow up their own house instead, we'd all be laughing about it.

Because, discrimination and racism can be funny. Discrimination and racism boil down to stupidity, and stupid people tend to make for good laughs for Farkers.

You and Tatsuma have said that discrimination and racism can never be funny.

I find it hard to believe that, with the existence of "Blazing Saddles" and pretty much every other Mel Brooks movie, anyone can say that discrimination/racism is never funny.
