muninsfire: Eh?

So mincing words like "economically disadvantaged" instead of "unemployed" is a good thing? O.o;

No, people who say, We could end the war in iraq by boming all the major cities, but we have to be PC. Listen to the Savage nation or even Limbaugh, it's one of the things they rally against.

heap: no, it's laughing at idiots, the very same thing you'll find in every other thread on this site.

But the main thesis of this article is about racism and discrimination. Asshats are just supplements to this story. I'm not saying don't make fun of them, I'm saying the tag was used incorrectly.

it was obvious by her leather armor she was a Druid.

A few weeks ago, this summer, one of the Melbourne synagogue was vandalized, all the windows broken and threats against the rabbi. The rabbi refuses to be named in interviews, even with Israeli newspapers, and keeps his name off the phone directory because of the threats that are received.

So, no, I wouldn't be surprised if she was indeed blocked from that bar because she's a jew.

Does this mean there's rampant anti-semitism in Australia? Not necessarely.

Does it mean there are racist assholes there? Absolutely

Tatsuma: I don't have a problem with her being stopped from entering the bar because she's crazy, I have a problem with her being stopped from entering the bar because she's of X ethnicity/religion/nationality

I would too, no question. And sadly we know up here the Natives can spout ugly anti-semitism too but this really may not be the case here. Assuming he was pagan is sort of a flag for me there.

Jamrock: Calm the F down. It's not nearly as big of a deal as you make it. Read the article. It really is amusing. I didn't even pick up on the title being offensive when I read it.

Whatever, I have my opinion about this and I said it. Much like you have yours and you said it.

both of ya are off yer friggin nut.

if you don't find people too dumb to be racist and even come close to getting it right funny...that's great. humor is subjective.

but jutting out your ass-feathers and trying to claim that finding that amusing is racist in and of itself...yer friggin loony.

Mostly because China's an officially atheist nation, and Shinto doesn't really do much for starting wars.

Well let me put it to you another. Have they EVER gone to war over religion? No? Great, thats my point proven. Thats a side track in any case, what I am saying is that a few religious differences aside, theres not a lot to seperate the Arabs and Jews. I mean, they both descended from the same root religion, although my understanding of that may be flawed...

Stuff like that, yes. And other stuff like, I have to deal with brown people walking through checkpoints at the airport without being stripsearched, because all of this PC bullshiat. But now we're going to a whole other topic. My point was that accepted racism starts with jokes.

What the fark

How is this amusing, subby??

I'm guessing that it's amusing because it's an amusing article about a very strange lady, but that's just a guess. Also, reading the article it sounds like her claims that she was barred for looking jewish are false - a real Jew even works there!

2006-10-05 11:49:47 AM
heap: but jutting out your ass-feathers and trying to claim that finding that amusing is racist in and of itself.

i never said that. I said I found this event steeped in discrimination (which it was) and that I woulndn't use the amusing tag, i find it inappropriate. i never told you or anyone how to think, and never used any personal attacks (which you did)

So who's jutting out assfeathers? I'm just throwing in my 2 cents.

Exactly.

It doesn't. But since we have established what she is very likely like, I would guess that if the bouncers weren't being 'racist' she would be invoking the 'Burning times' instead.

Tatsuma:
Discriminating people based on race, or religion, or ethnicity is never cool

Interesting verb there, "discriminating". I'd agree with you if you said "hurting". Hurting people can be occasionally funny, but strong people hurting weak people is never amusing. And yes, when people hurt others on the basis of race, religion or ethnicity, there tends to be a power imbalance involved. The Holocaust was a pretty good example.

A lone kid of a certain ethnicity getting taunted with slurs isn't funny. Two heads of state exchanging ethnic slurs is usually hillarious. An aging Australian druid throwing a hissy fit outside of a night club? Hillarious, regardless of what was said, though I doubt they really said it like she implies. Unless they encircled her and screamed "Jew" as they beat her, or followed her around for years hissing "Jew" in her ear, this isn't what you think it is.

You have to draw the line at racism and discrimination.

So you're basically saying that it's worst to call a black woman "dumb attractive and successful African-American coont" than it is to molest her children.

There's a tag here with your name on it, it starts with a D and finishes with two s

Persepolis: So who's jutting out assfeathers?

yah, i 'spose i should have been a little more clear than 'both of ya'.

i find it inappropriate.

welcome to fark.

2006-10-05 11:52:04 AM
Tatsuma,

Have you ever been discriminated because of your race?

Yes, I have.

I don't think you're going to find many people who haven't, at some point in their lives, been discriminated against/marginalized/or made fun of because of their race/religion/ethnicity.

Most people realize that you're going to have idiots whereever you go and that getting worked up over little jabs at your race/religion/ethnicity is unhealthy and not a very fun way to live life.

You have no idea how offensive that is to either culture.

I have as good an idea as you of how offensive it is. Considering that neither of us are Chinamen and neither of us grew up in China or Japan.

I do know that most Asians I've been friends with or associated with don't really take offense at people mixing them up with other Asians or making jokes about it.

Normal people will make a crack back at you and carry on. Once you join the military, you're going to see exactly how funny racism can be. When I was active with the 101st, 90% of the jokes we made were racial. Our unit was about 10% hispanic, 40% white, and 50% black. Needless to say, most of the jokes related to stealing hubcaps, small dicks, and watermelon.

Just lighten up. Seriously. You'll have a much more enjoyable life when you stop looking for prejudice/discrimination everywhere you go.

SchlingFo: "Chinese, Japanese, what's the difference?"
Not everyone resorts to violence at the drop of a hat, dude.

To me, discrimination is a change in behavior or interaction with a person based on a personal trait of theirs. Which seems to be the case in this event.

2006-10-05 10:36:57 AM Persepolis

And in this case, based on what happened, I agree the amusing tag was in bad taste. I know if someone posted the exact same thing, but the woman was refused enterance because they thought she was Iranian, I would be very offended if the amusing tag was used, so it's no different to me here.

Well this is assuming that the woman was actually refused entry because she was jewish as opposed to her being a 50+ druish (teehee) wackjob trying to get into a youth nightclub at 1:30am wearing her complete druid ensemble (wildheart anyone???). Remember that she was refused entry before the doorman noticed her pagan star (although they could have been more polite about it).

"Oh, you're jewish?" = Question based on funny looking necklace that looks like the star of david but not really, not an accusation. I have asked people many stupid innane questions like this in order to diffuse a tense situation because people like to talk about themselves.

"No, im a pagan like you" = Assumption based on race.

Using that analogy deserves the dumbass tag. I don't even understand how you could derive that from what I said.

Exactly what I thought. For the sons of Chinese or Japanese immigrants who have lived here since they were born, they most likely won't be too bothered about it if they are really removed from their cultural origins in general

To anyone who actually lived/lives in China/Japan, it's going to be a huuuuuge insult.

2006-10-05 11:55:44 AM
The bar let her 15 year old son in, so they can't be that discriminating.

FTFA

The guard, Clay Auimatagi, told the hearing he would never make an insensitive religious comment but had asked whether the star was a Jewish symbol to defuse an argument between Morgan and another guard, Michael Almatrah.

Mr Auimatagi said Morgan was swearing at the other two security guards and they were "giving it back".

Morgan said she felt threatened so she performed a ritual "evoking the guardians" to protect her.

She said the crowd controllers mocked her ritual.

I agree with you that the woman is a retard. But I still feel that the theme of this article was (Woman gets denied entry into a bar because she was thought to be jewish) and the tag used on that was amusing. That doesn't seem right to me. Again, I'm not telling you guys how to feel about it. But I can't stand by when I have a voice to say something, and not say it when I think theres an issue of discrimination going on.

Wait, so the article makes it clear that she was not allowed in because she was taken for Jewish, specifically, or because, being taken for Jewish, she was therefore not a Druid?

2006-10-05 11:56:59 AM
I wouldn't want the old rag in my bar either. And imagine, being laughed at for perfoming a little protection ritual. Unless it involved numchucks, it probably was not too impressive.

"Sale Juif" isn't related to hygiene. And I take two showers a day. So, no.

I was at the grocery store a few months ago and I had like, 42 cents of change and I told the cashier to keep it. He said "Oh, I thought you people were more careful about money"

Er...but the article IS about discrimination. If the tags were intended to be used to refer to expected thread contributions, wouldn't the ALL be "Amusing"? Typically they refer to the content of the ARTICLE, which in this case certainly isn't.

Yes, the Spaceball reference IS amusing, though one would think it would be exhausted right away. Or maybe if we follow the reasoning of those who think the tag is appropriate, we should have a "Flame War" tag?

I think it was probably more in the range of "whiney freak with a persecution complex".
