What people don't realize is that while global warming might raise the tide by a few feet (but not the 20+ feet the scare-mongers claim), and lose you some of that expensive coastline, it also puts a lot more water in the air and increases rainfall, shrinking the size of the deserts and making land there more livable. Deserts grow during -cold- periods, not -warm- periods, oddly enough.

In reply to the original post, Gore's a moron. I'm sure the story is genuine, Drudge doesn't have a history of lying. It's why Drudge Report is the #1 news site.

Yes, I get all my news from right-wing loony sites! This is downright retarded.

I'm guessing that the standards to become Fark admin have regrettably fallen pretty damn low. Perhaps we could also have a link to a web site featuring the Protocols of the Elders of Zion linked up on the front page, with a "breaking news" tag?

I really hope you're not talking about parental advisories on music. Because if you are, then you're a moron. At the time, I could understand the argument that the labels may hurt sales, thereby causing artists to censor themselves in order to sell more records, but looking back now, that clearly hasn't happened. Music is more explicit than ever, and the labels hurt absolutely no one, and allow parents a tool to see if the music is appropriate for their children. How does this hurt free speech?

If you're talking about something else, I apologize, and please enlighten us.

No funnier than the fact that Kerry's fans forget that he wrote much of the Patriot Act, and voted for it.

Or that Bush's fans forget that he pretended he was a conservative when he was running.

the_god_ninti: pguy40: Is it going to kill someone? I don't think 2 degrees hotter is going to do that, so whats the big fuss?

A degree or two globably would have dire consequences for many people, and not just those subject to the impact of rising sea levels. Consider how climate change might effect precipitation. What impact does periodic drought have on countries with insufficient food supplies? Or think about disease; there are many populated areas where a relatively slight change in climate could introduce new vectors for malarial epidemics. In Africa there is a delicate balance between rainfall and agricultural practices; the tse-tse fly (the vector for sleeping sickness) only thrives on one side of the 10mm isohet, which runs across Africa's waist. People there have adopted two species of cattle (ndama and zebu) according to where they live; only one species is immune to sleeping sickness. If the precipitation regime changes dramatically and the 10mm line drifts south, cattle die, people starve, and then the starving people get bitten by the expanding tse-tse fly population and die.

Of course, that's in Africa, so most Americans won't give a rat's ass.

OMG Drudge quotes Gore saying "significant contributor to global warming!" And prefaces it with cigarette smoking.

Drudge is a hack and certainly isn't a journalist, you can tell by the way in which the article was written.

What the fark does I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives mean?

Basically, he was asked why should someone vote for him, and this is the best reason he could come up with . . . and he presumably had a while to think about it, like a whole campaign. What an idiot

Over at National Review they're skeptical that he actually said this...

Re: Gore [Iain Murray]

I should add I'm personally skeptical that Gore actually said this. I think it may be a confused rendition of George Monbiot's crackpot theory that Big Tobacco is behind global warming skepticism. George needs to realize that Big Tobacco is too busy entering into deals to fleece its customers to fund Big Government...

It sounds like a pretty blatantly stupid of a thing for someone to say, so I'd have to agree that this will likely turn out to be a misquote of some kind.

All the "Drudge is teh ev1ls!!1111!!!1!!" kids make baby Jeebus cry, though... Drudge's site isn't perfectly accurate - but neither are the more "respectable" news sources. In fact, I'd be willing to wager that they are at least roughly equivalent in terms of accuracy.

let's see, using farkII's numbers i get cigarettes release 0.32 metric tonnes of CO2 per year... let's assume there are 600 million automobiles in the world (because i like easy math) and that they travel 60 mph 18 hours a day on average. that yields 648,000 million miles (~1 trillion kilometers). the worst emissions allowed by california emissions (european emissions are harsher than american) are 0.01 grams/mile (a confusing unit to say the least) and not even all of that is greenhouse gases, but let's assume they are... then you get the easy number of 6480 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide.. meaning cars emit 20000 times the carbon dioxide of cigarettes in one year. feel free to do the math yourself if you don't like my numbers especially since i was hand-waving and picking random figures whenever i felt like it.

???

I love the lack of sources in that 'report.' :\

Gore showed computer-generated projections of ocean water rushing in to submerge the San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, parts of China, India and other nations, should ice shelves in Antarctica or Greenland melt and slip into the sea.

I fail to see why Global Warming is such a bad thing, he just stated the entire case for it! Go buy an SUV, crank up the AC and go for a road trip to the mountains!

Also farkII do you believe everything the TV tells you? It irritates me when people don't reaserach both sides of the coin, and it irritates me that only programs designed to prove Global Warming are the only ones that get funding. My opinion on the matter is that the climate fluxuates over the years, drillings from the ice caps show long periods of drought come before each ice age.

2006-09-29 05:16:22 PM
god you people are idiots.

look at the quote:
Cigarette smoking is a "significant contributor to global warming!"

note how that's constructed. the quotes are around 'significant contributor to global warming!'

you know what that means? it's been put together. out of context.

note how the rest of the "article" doesn't mention this or back it up at all. if he really, really said that, you'd think there'd be a bit more, wouldn't you?

i repeat, god you people are idiots.

go to school. pay attention. learn to think critically. calm the fark down.

Given that I don't watch TV, I guess not. I have, however, read a fair bit of the meanstream scientific literature on climate change. Is that ever on TV?

I don't think your estimate of a few feet matches the science, but you know, you are probably partly right, there will probably be more livable land if the temperature goes up. But you miss a lot of important points. One problem is that the weather will be more energetic, which also means more chaotic and random. That will translate into more destructive storms interspersed with longer droughts. There is no doubt New Orleans and Florida have been getting more rain, but that has hardly been a good thing.

Drudge doesn't have a history of lying.

That's a joke, right? You seemed so reasonable before that line. Still wrong, but at least reality based.

Yes I have given it quite a bit of thought.

If the oceans rose 1 foot tomorrow, coastal cities would be farked.

Now our government will tell us that this sort of thing will destroy the national economy, utterly and irrevocably, unless they institute national bailout plans to artificially prop up the economy until it can recover*. Every single one of us, who doesn't live on the coast will pay for it of course.

So yeah, it will have terrible consequences.

It is my stance that the "caveots" have no capability to be wary, because someone else is doing all the thinking for them. Now lets hope that if oceans do rise, coastal cites undergo reengineering by private capital(no IMF shiat please) and beautiful and verdant Venice's are the standard for 2106.

* No fake influx of $$ has rarely helped a market to recover, only hurt it. Hong Kong got 0$ from the Marshall reconstruction plan, and it became a free marked god, while the beneficiaries were dismal failures.

Sloth_DC:

B) That article makes the same point I was making: Idiots who say Gore claimed to "invent the Internet" are just as sloppy and retarded as idiots who say Gore's statement was 100% factually accurate and please stop ragging him for it.

2006-09-29 04:22:43 PM Sloth_DC [TotalFark]

Tertius: BTW, Gore never said he invented the internet either.

No, he said he "took the initiative in creating the Internet." Let's see, Internet went online in 1969, Al Gore started "taking the initiative in creating the Internet" ~1987. Hey, you do the math.

From the article:

Any news report that tries to summarize Internet history by dating its origin to the 1960s or the year 1969 is oversimplifying. Such a news report is as sloppy as the statement for which they take Gore to task. (original emphasis)

Yeah, you were totally saying the same thing as the article.

And oh, by the way, the throwaway mention of the Love Story debacle being representative of Gore's tendency for exaggeration was a load of media-contrived horse-pucky as well.

Rubbing sticks together generates heat and possible fire. Both would theoretically contribute to global warming.

You need to prove that the heat generated by rubbing sticks together would permanently (or at least semi-permanently) increase temperatures world-wide.

Hmmm...so anyone who doesn't like gore is automatically a conservative. Just, I suppose, like how anyone who doesn't like Bush is a liberal.

So where does that leave those of us who don't really care for either?
