yes I think anyone who hate the WoD knows what LEAP is. Actually for me personally somehow I knew about leap.cc before norml.org

I love this quote:

"I can't tell you how many of those people, mostly young, mostly poor, probably mostly people of color, would have gone on to have a perfectly good, healthy, happy lives had I not come across their path."

We use Cisco LEAP at work... does that count?

Ask the average LEO who he'd rather deal with: someone stoned out of his/her gourd, or some drunk?

Plus there's a huge amount of untaxed revenue flowing through the country as a result of the illegal drug trade. The tax revenue we would gain would be significantly non-trivial.

Plus if Big Tobacco had any brains, they'd realize that their business model is circling the drain, and growing pot is a lot easier than growing tobacco.

/but that would involve planning and forethought
//and admitting defeat

I just gave them $100. Excellent, sensible organization that I had never heard of. Thanks, Fark.

Is the war on drugs even about drugs?

2006-09-28 08:02:53 PM
good for them. i wish them luck. I've long thought the war on drugs was unwinnable.

Baron Von Supercock: Is the war on drugs even about drugs?

Nope.

Good for them. I hope they find success and mainstream acceptance... if I had money, I'd give them some financial support.

Damn, I'm drinking whiskey right now. That doesn't go with popcorn!

..."Let me ask a question," says Christ, rubbing his hands together like a magician about to draw a dove from thin air. "Does anyone in this room believe we can do anything in this society to make drugs go away?"

No hands go up. Christ nods.

Comedy gold.

Come on people, I don't care what type of background you come from. The Rockefeller Laws need to be reformed and rewritten under a Democratic administration. Period.

2006-09-28 08:21:00 PM
stop enforcing it?

2006-09-28 08:21:08 PM
That's a pretty bad acronym

2006-09-28 08:21:35 PM
They have no idea how to effectively legalize drugs and no idea what the result would be of legalizing drugs just the opinion that its the right thing to do because fighting a drug war costs a lot of money, yeah this will end well.

Evil Otto

You hit on the missing link here. Drugs will never be legalized until some big corporate power can develop a plan to make it profitable for them. As it is, Tobacco, Alcohol, and Pharma lobbies fight tooth and nail to sustain the War on Some Drugs largely from a protectionBoobiesure.

I usually have a hard time participating in this debate, because as hard as I try, I still don't understand what the argument is. "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" seems to cover this one for me.

2006-09-28 08:24:24 PM
I think people are entitled to do what they wish with their bodies..but when people start doing weird shiat just so they can get the money to support their vice then you know something is wrong.

/Keep your eyes out for the crackheads.

Well, if Christ insists...
I think this is certainly one of those places where teh religious right and the liberal left can finally meet.

I agree with you, but let's face it. When will a Libertarian administration come under power durning our lifetime?

Oh wait, it won't...

2006-09-28 08:27:54 PM
I'm not a drug fan by any stretch, but it certainly does seem as if the WoD is nothing short of a Sisyphean challenge. It's not working, and it's time for a new approach.

2006-09-28 08:28:06 PM
Pardon me, but, if we legalize drugs, what in the world would we use as a generic excuse for locking up the young, negro males whenever their swarthy gazes make us uncomfortable?

Arrrrrgh! I'm glad you agree. But that statement makes you part of the problem. Sorry.

I thought a LEAP was just an option with an expiration date a long way off.

I'm pretty sure it actually stands for Local Electrode Atom Probe, a relatively new and exciting characterization technique.

I totally agree with these guys and I don't even do drugs. I think this would solve a lot of problems. Nobody benefited more from prohibition than the criminals, after all.

2006-09-28 08:37:09 PM
I think Christ might have the right of it.

His message is certainly compelling.

2006-09-28 08:37:33 PM
this is blatantly obvious and is the only logical way possible to end the war on drugs as the headline said. people have been saying it for years....it's cool to see that there is actually an organization out there that is made up of those in law enforcement who actually beleive this as well.

Great, so you want a government that will make it legal for people to buy pot and legal for corporations to sell them catnip labeled as pot. That's a good solution.

2006-09-28 08:40:26 PM
DankHemplar: Drugs will never be legalized until some big corporate power can develop a plan to make it profitable for them.

well that's not too difficult...drugs don't need to be "sold" as they sell themselves well enough.

and the "War on Drugs" was NEVER about drugs, it's always been about revenue and racism.

2006-09-28 08:40:42 PM
I think that not only should most drugs be legal, but some should be mandatory. Man, my high school years would have been so much different if I hadn't waited until college to discover the joys of el diablo.

/ And drop the drinking age to 16 1/2 and up the driving age to 18.
/ And no voting until you pass the U.S. citizenship test, regardless of whether you were born here or not.
/ And abortion should be legal until age 6.

2006-09-28 08:41:17 PM
this makes sense, and I'm all for it.

Unfortunately, it probably won't happen

:(

2006-09-28 08:41:17 PM
LEAP does not offer suggestions for how legal drugs would be regulated and distributed because its members hold a diverse range of opinions on the topic. Instead, the group aims to bring awareness to the drug war and to destigmatize the "L-word" - legaliaztion.

Legalia...... what now?

2006-09-28 08:41:42 PM
In Connecticut, nearly 25 percent of prisoners are incarcerated for drug offenses, a disproportionate 47 percent of whom are black men.

So the other 53% are....

Horray for potentially legalizing crack and heroin! Then we'll have tons more addicts who can take advantage of our government's fine mental health and social service networks.

2006-09-28 08:44:51 PM
The best arguments against the war on drugs I have ever heard have all come from cops. Just like the best arguments against keeping prostitution illegal I've ever heard have come from cops. Now if only anyone would listen.

Yes, because prohibition is the only thing keeping me from smoking some crack!
