And I was expecting it to be the UPenn prof who's been busted, but *not fired*, for kiddie porn *three times*. (Well, I think the university issued a strongly-worded "maybe we won't let him teach again for a little while this time" statement after the 3rd one.) But of course it's an entirely different guy at an entirely different university. I'm just too damn naive, that's all...

"I just don't know very much about those topics, and so I was trying to gain knowledge so I could be a more effective teacher in the classroom," he said."

"I'm a professor of criminal justice. I don't know very much about shooting a man during an armed robbery, so when I went into the bank with that sawed-off shotgun, I was just trying to gain knowledge..."

But according to the arrest warrant affidavit, the college's president, Dr. Cary Israel, told the investigating officer Creech was not performing any authorized research.

Sounds like someone wanted to get this guy fired.

Israel: "He Professor Creech, I was wondering if you would do a little about child pornography in this years human sexuality class, we have a couple crime students in there and we think it would be a good way for them to get to know the inner thoughts of a child molester."
Creesh: "Are you sure that would be okay? I mean, in order to teach this class I might have to acquire some child pornography in order to do this."
Israel: "Oh don't worry about that, as long as it is for research it is okay."
Creech: "Well alright, I will do it."

a little later that day...
Israel: "Police, yes I believe one of our professors has child pornography on his computer, come right away, this man is a reaaal pervert."

I remember working for the IT department at my undergrad. When we were going through all that Y2K BS during christmas break, I got the English/Philosophy/Theology faculty office building to take care of. I went into one professor's office, sat down at the PC, and nudged the mouse to turn off the screen saver. Big ol' beaaver picture right there. Nothing illegal, just not what you expect.

What makes it even better is that he was a 70 year old priest.

Silly Professor.

Researching child pornography is done by aging rockstars, not career academics who study human sexuality!

That's not mine!!

One credit card receipt for membership to "TotallyUnderage XXX.com", signed by Professor John Creech...

I'm telling ya baby, that's not mine!

One complaint form on the slow download rates for "TotallyUnderageXXX.com", filled out by Professor John Creech...

I don't even know what this is! This sort of thing ain't my bag, baby.

One book, "Child Porn and Me: This Sort of Thing Really Is My Bag, Baby!", by Professor John Creech...

Well..

If you are truly doing something like that for teaching, you had better document how everything you did relates back to the course curriculum. Even if his curiosity was purely academic, he deserves to be fired if he was hanging out in his office using University resources to access illegal material without documenting what he was doing and getting explicit permission from the University.

I had a undergrad class and the professor showed things FAR more controversial than suggestive poses of underage girls. This prof had HUGE "street credibility" on the topic and nobody questioned his expertise. Of course, he also brought everything in from his "private collection" instead of using the University's resources.

Now, is that the Pete Townsend Defense, the Woody Allen Defense, the Roman Polanski Defense or the Victor Salva Defense?

Oh, yeah:

Pete = Research
Woody = The Heart on Wants what the Hard-on Wants
Roman = It was ok with her Mom and she was high
Victor = It was only a boy, so who cares

I get them so confused.

(second paragraph with very odd anecdote snipped)

I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt that a University would OK such a project with their equipment.

Professor: "Oh, and we're doing an advanced human sexuality course, and I need to use your computer network to download child pr0n off the Net."

University leader: "Oh, OK. I'll go put the handcuffs on now, so the cops'll have an easy time when they trace it."

I could be wrong - I don't have infallable, omniscient knowledge - but I serously doubt there's an exception in the law for academic research. It's just too much of a "buzz issue" right now.. I mean, how could it be justified?

And of course, he'll use an open Wi-Fi hot spot in the neighborhood, so the FBI/ICE/Marshalls/whatever can bust in the door of some 65-year-olds, who had their network "expertly set up" by their geeky grandson. =:oD

Yeah, I seriously doubt he would have ever gotten an OK, which he had to have known and justifies his dismissal.

You are right, it IS a buzz issue. In some ways, it is frustrating to see encroachment on intellectual freedoms. On the other hand, intellectual freedom comes with responsibility and professionalism. In an ideal world, a college classroom is an environment where people should be able to sit down, examine, and discuss controversial and perhaps even illegal material. Certainly, for a course on human sexuality, there must be changing trends in subject matter, including victim profiles.

But, I'm sure I'm giving this guy too much credit.

His excuse is about as watertight as a sieve. "It was to go along with the last chapter of this book, which is on all kinds of pornography, not just child porn". So why have child porn, and not, you know, LEGAL kinds of porn? Dumbass indeed.

Actually, because child pornography is banned under the "obscenity loophole" to free speech, it IS legal to download if there is a serious academic, literary, artistic, political, etc. merit. And yes, there HAVE been actual academics who have researched child porn -- a search on a journals database revealed one person even did a Ph.D. thesis on it -- but of course in those cases, the university knew it was going on, the results were published, and hopefully weren't used for wanking material.

2006-09-26 08:03:41 PM
I can't really imagine why you would need to view child porn to 'research' it.

2006-09-26 08:04:36 PM
"It discusses whether or not pornography has been shown to be harmful to people who look at it or use it," he said.

Gotta get rid of those "tenured" professors somehow.

Umm... no. Child pornography has its own ban under the Federal code - judicial decisions have upheld it, via reason that it involves harm to a real child. (The converse of this, BTW, is why the ban on "virtual" child porn was struck down.) It's not a freedom-of-speech issue, it's a child welfare issue.

The "obscenity loophole" - or more properly, the three-prong test - you speak of, applies to more mainstream materials, not covered by other valid legal mechanisms (e.g., normal 18+ porn). However, in most cases, it's not enforced - at least in the last 5-10 years or so.

(The exception being broadcast radio and TV. No examples needed...)

A reasonable argument..

However, if I were a professor, I wouldn't touch that subject with a 10-foot-pole. There's a zillion other frivolous things that can be researched, to waste taxpayer grant $$$. =:oD

It's not the buzz factor. That's just stupidity and desperation (for a lesson plan) approaching Darwinistic proportions. =xoD

Prof.: "OK class, today's lesson is on bestial buttsecks. Example 1 will be up on the projector in a moment..."
Student 1 (girl): "Ewww!"
Student 2 (guy): "Dude, that's gross!"
Student 3 (girl): "You can say that again..."
Student 4 (guy): *fap fap fap fap*
Kitten in a distant land: *plop*

This sounds like a classic case of "teacher did something illegal for class but didn't bother with the red tape" combined with "brown-nosing, snobby Christian lady tries to get teacher fired after disagreeing with popular practices".
