But since the 1990s, Beijing has been encouraging Confucianism as part of celebrating traditional Chinese culture -- and of pushing a message of obedience to those in power.

Well, looks like they finally got the hint on how to use the damn philosophy, then.

'bout time.

I'm a big fan of Confucianism. Confucius was ten times the political philosopher Machiavelli could have ever hoped to be.

My favorite real Confucius quote is something to the effect of "Regarding ghosts, spirits, and fox demons, these are something I shall not discuss."

Fundamentally Confucius was an agnostic. He did not claim to have any special knowledge of the supernatural and seems to think that such matters were a waste of time, saying things such as "if you don't even know how to treat other humans right, how can you deal with gods?" and "giving sacrifices to spirits who do nothing for you is nothing but flattery."

I like Taoism a bit better. But then again, I'm a little too chaotic to be fully "within the proper place" like Confucious would want me to be.

That, and I'm always paranoid that I'm not spelling his name right. It's too Confucing.

Nicollo was about getting things done. He didn't write The Prince from Prison just to say please, He wrote it to tell people what to do and if self-preservation is an instinct they possess they'd better f-ing do it and do it quick!

If He's curt to you it's because time is a factor. He thinks fast, He writes fast and He needs his readers to act fast if they wanna get out of their messes. So, pretty please... with sugar on top. Clean the f-ing car!

I was translating Mr. Wolf quotes from pulp ficion to fit here, but It got a little shaky at the end.

i don't know about that, confucius was more of a social philosopher than a political philosopher, and his political philosophy was all about morality. which is, of course, all well and good except when you get real people involved. machiavelli was more of a realist.

one could say that marx was a much superior economic philosopher than a man like adam smith was, but i think the measure of philosophy is the reality of the ideas, not the abstract beauty of them.

of course the middle ground here is to call machiavelli a political scientist.

SSPinkerton: but i think the measure of philosophy is the reality of the ideas, not the abstract beauty of them.

This is going to end up like a physics department, isn't it, with the theoretical and experimental physicists at each other's throats...

/I like beauty. I like practicality. Keep to the center--seek the middle way. There are many paths to the Way, but the middle is the best to travel on.

I was in Taipei at the downtown Confucian Temple on Confucius' Birthday 15 or 16 years ago. It was a day long celebration of teachers and education. The whole performance was by teachers and students in period costumes and using ancient muscial instruments. Grand theater.

It was great to see a society where teaching and learning is respected and treated special. Education is where the Taiwanese, in fact Chinese and a lot of Asian cultures, are head and shoulders above the rest of the world. The USA could do this to but it's not PC to demand higher performance from kids unless it's for a sports activity.

Not a fan of Confucius. Waayy to much focus on traditions, rituals, and "virtues". Too republican.

Chinese religion and philosophes, while they certainly have had historical upheavals and wars and killing, is in contemporary ways practiced in "layers." The religions occupy different social locations, and thus coexist peacefully in the lives of people who access them at different times. Same in Japan. Also, they don't necessarily claim to be universal, so there isn't really a need to compete. Buddhism is somewhat the exception here, but Chinese Buddhist history is in many ways always the exception that proves the rule in China.

Which aspect are you so fond of? The "failed politician who was more interested in serving power and hierarchy than in the welfare of the people" aspect? Or the "fan of the chocking beauracracy and authoritarian compliance in the guise of harmony whose legacy was to cause the standstill of China's technical and political advancement for centuries" aspect?

Or just the plain, "chauvinist racist" aspect?

They do things a little differently in China.

I'd be a little annoyed with the image because of the smiling. It just doesn't seem very accurate to me.
