Vaccines almost certainly don't cause autism. Vaccination schedules, on the other hand, might be causing a variety of central nervous system disorders including the autistic spectrum disorders and less pervasive abnormalities such as ADD and ADHD, and even more likely, unusual allergies. Causation is very difficult, especially since the mothers of today's children also had numerous vaccinations.

The preservative (Thimerosal) in the DPT vaccine contains mercury. Some claim it caused an outbreak of autism.

/Mostly anecdotal evidence.

FarkinNortherner: Are you being sarcastic ?

I've heard of this suspected link for several years now. GoSpelunking, the last I read, mercury used (I think) as a preservative in the vaccines was being blamed.

But just a few weeks ago there was an item that I think made the main page; it was on a study that found that men over 40 were 6 times as likely to have autistic babies.

I know, Andrew Wakefield et al. I'm a bit bemused that someone would say they'd 'heard of' and were 'still...researching' it, since it's been done to death in the media.

To be honest, I only read about the claims a couple of weeks ago, but I can't remember where. I just remember the claim was against the MMR vaccine.

Thimerosal (SP) is the cause. It's a CHEAP preservative used in most vaccines which contains mostly mercury which is toxic to the human brain. In certain other countries like Russia vaccines with thimerosal have been banned for decades. It's used so that doctors can use the same bottle of vaccine for multiple injections without bacteria growing in it. If they just bottled the vaccine in its own throw-away syringe it would be more costly, but wouldnt involve all the thimerasol. In the 90s a bunch of extra vaccines were added which means a LOT more mercury going into younger children. If you look at the actual ammounts most kids are exposed to higher levels of mercury than the FDA considers safe.

This is why I refuse to get any shot from my idiot doctor without first reading the ingredients. She tried to give me a tetnus booster with that farking poison in it and I declined, she got all pissy telling me I had no idea what I was talking about and that its perfectly safe. 6 months later the state of NY (my home state) passed legeslation banning it. I dont think that legeslation is in effect yet.

acr2001: Thimerosal (SP) is the cause.

Thank you very much for that information. I had not been able to uncover any specifics like that thus far. I will have to research that further.

And yes... I'm serious. I have kids and I want to be absolutely sure I know what I'm doing to them before I do it to them.

Because before the 90s they were just called retards. Autism is the trendy disorder now....just like all the people think they are OCD because they saw a famous actor with it in a cool movie. People have not changed all that much....we just keep adding new diseases and creating new pills to treat them.

acr2001

Unfortunately this just isn't true. Thimerasol bashing has become a cause celebre fueled by panicky suburban housewives who refuse to believe the extensive studies that've been done.

Go look up the studies if you feel like it. Denmark banned Thimerasol in the early 90s and the rate of autism among kids vaccinated from then on continued to increase. There is NO link. The amount of mercury in vaccines is tiny, and within FDA limits. Go look up the difference between methyl and ethyl mercury as well, and you'll understand why thimerasol is not the cause.

Congress put autism on the list of disabilities that qualified for federal funds back in 1990. Diagnosis and treatment of autism have soared since then (shocking!)

acr2001: Thimerosal (SP) is the cause.

Five wide scale epidemiological studies strongly suggest not. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, the Institute of Medicine, the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics do not support that view either.

Much of the 'evidence' in support of the claim comes from Dr Mark Geier "a professional witness in areas for which he has no training, expertise and experience." Laura D. Millman, Special Master US Court of Federal Claims, October 9th 2003.

Unright:

That's definately not what I meant.

In 1990 Congress passed the 1990 Individuals With Disabilities Education Act which greatly increased funding for kids with various disabilities. Autism previously didn't qualify, so school districts/parents/therapists etc didn't have any incentive to fully diagnose autism, many kids were just considered slow or were classified under different categories of disability.

The change in federal funding eligibility parameters is the largest cause of the surge in autism in this country (though there likely are some environmental causes too).

Once autism qualified, the autistic kids started being diagnosed at a much higher rate, so their school districts/parents/therapists could be reimbursed for the cost of the care the children were entitled to by federal statute.

Thimerosal...don't vaccinate your kids until they're at least 12 months.

2006-09-24 12:24:11 AM
The vaccination theory has been tested like crazy and there isn't even a corrollation there, let alone causation. Systematics having children together is a much more plausible explanation. No one really knows yet, partly because this is about brain function which is difficult to figure out and which not many actually care about all that much.

2006-09-24 01:17:18 AM
I can see the Thimerosal crowd has started to come out. Hey I'm all for not blindly following everything your doctor tells you without researching some things yourself first but the tests on it haven't shown a link. Autism is likely caused by a variety of factors and genetics seems to play a rather large role as far as suscepibility goes (like with cancer).

Better diagnosis seems to definitly account for a large portion of the increase/

2006-09-24 01:27:43 AM
The vaccine theory has yet to be proven and as has been stated earlier, the areas where Thimerosal has been banned are STILL seeing an increase in kids with Autistic Spectrum diagnoses.

Furthermore, as someone who has Asperger's Syndrome, I'm tired of people telling me that I have a "disorder" of somekind. Yes, I may be different in some ways than most 27 year olds, but I managed to graduate high school, attend college, hold down a decent paying job for years, live on my own, date, travel, own and drive a car, make and keep friends, as well as many other activities which many consider to be part of a "normal" existance. Just because I have slightly obsessive tendencies, heightened senses, and don't always look people in the eyes when talking to them doesn't mean I'm any less different than you.

As was stated earlier, I believe the rise is due to better diagnoses. And I have a feeling that we'll be seeing an increasing number of cases in the future.

And yes, that Mary Grace girl in the article is hot, she's jailbait, but she's still hot.
