you're missing the point. i don't doubt the damage capacity of a stick. what i'm saying is that the blade and the stick are different animals.

you must not be aware of the disconnect between dan rank and actual skill that exists in most styles of karate, and tkd

And you must not have read the part I wrote about decent schools being required for correct ranking.

anyway, your arnis teacher should have taught you the difference between the use of a stick and the use of a blade. if he has not, i suggest looking for another school. many filipino teachers, as tradition dictates, teach stick first and transition to knife and machete but don't thoroughly explain the differences.

Of course I've learned the difference. But I've also been taught the similarities. I thought I was clear about that in my post when I stated: "I have a good sense of what the differences are, and how edge and cane style weapons are interchangable." (meaning, not being completely interchangeable, but in what ways they are interchageable.)

btw, my Arnis instructor learned from (and in fact was a close, personal friend of) Professor Preses, the founder of modern arnis, as the professor spent the last years of his life in Victoria. As well as having an extensive background in martial arts, with both scholastic (by that I mean simply class/training, etc.) and practical experience.

Not trying to justify anything to you, I'm simply saying that this cane defense that is being offered is better than nothing, and probably more than sufficient for elderly life in Victoria.

what this cane defense class is going to do is instill a false sense of confidence. which is a hell of a lot more dangerous than not knowing anything.

Look...as a young person who just recently slaughed off the designation of teenager, and who has speant more than his share of nights wandering around suburban neighborhoods blitzed...I have never in my life been told to get off an older person's lawn.

Several months before Col. Rex Applegate died,3 muggers thought the old man with the cane would be an easy target.

All 3 got a trip to the hospital with various broken bones & internal injuries.
