Argh? Is that you?

They're lucky they picked this millenium to do it. When my dad was on a missile crew in the mid-70's, they had to qualify twice a year with a .38-cal. revolver. Two were stored in the silo in case bad guys came in or one of the crew members was a spy/went crazy.

When I first skimmed the headline all I saw was "dressed-up ass clowns."

Strange. Some things in there don't react well to bullets.

Actually, we had a post on these guys a day or two after they were arrested. There's still no explanation about the clown suits.

*Insert 'Bozo' joke here*

Before reading TFA, I feared that one of the clowns would be my younger brother.

\Srsly.

It is a good thing our nuclear missile silo's aren't guarded or anything

2006-09-15 02:30:55 PM
At least leftist protesters are dressing for the part now.

HEY! Just what do those clowns think they're doing???

iceman2082: It is a good thing our nuclear missile silo's aren't guarded or anything

They are, it's just that they don't have a guy standing outside each one all the time. The launch silos have nice big fences plus sensors that detect possible intruders.

Launch control is an underground capsule. Two guys inside. Upstairs from the capsule is the living / maintanance area. They sleep, watch TV, etc. up there when it's not their shift. Each of these capsule / living quarter things controls several missile silos (12 or so?), scattered several miles away.

The security people live there too. When a sensor goes off, they drive over to the appropriate one and find out it's just another rabbit.

Isn't tampering with your country's defense system treason? I realize they were just pounding on the lid with hammers, but what if they broke something?

There is also the question of how they got to the hatch of a freakin minuteman without getting shot a few dozen times...

This is the way I would go out.

Saying it like that, I feel bad that I'm not prepared to do that now as a mid-30s father.

Regardless, the minute the rugrat is on her own, then you'll read about me banging on the lid of a nuke silo in a clown outfit.

Hahahahahahahahaha. I believe those silos are what we call "hardened", and not just against barrages of teddy bears.

They are correct of course, that nuclear weapons are an obscenity.

2006-09-15 02:54:32 PM
These guys should be tied to a missile and launched into space!

2006-09-15 02:56:33 PM
Would have been a lot more comedic if they dressed up with turbans and big fake beards. They are just taking advantage of the fact that no one really likes to shoot a clown. Wussies.

Yo! Clowns! don't be touchin' on America's freedom (boom) sticks!

2006-09-15 02:56:47 PM
I'm glad they got a lot of attention (almost none) and rid of at least one nuke (exactly none) and changed minds of some people (in between the previous two, but closer to the latter).

I'd have worn a more creative suit, made of Post-its and cocktail stirers.

Actually, they were not at the MAF but at the silo itself, so the capsule crew would not of been there. However, there is are shotguns inside the silo for defense when work is being done on the missiles, otherwise the silos are NOT manned. Trust me, it would take MUCH longer for them to enter a silo then it would be for the security forces to arrive on site. I used to work on these things in the late 90's. As far as not being protected, thats why it is a hardened site. Concrete doors, slow descending entrance plug made of cold steel with multiple safety/locking feature, honestly they're lucky they didn't get shot.

whoa, those are some old ass protestors dressing like clowns!

Only because the look like giant phallic symbols

The tag should be follow-up. I remember when these ass clowns were first arrested. Looks like they reused most of the same article for it.

Is anyone else alarmed by the fact that three idiots in clown suits--from Wisconsin, no less--were able to break into A NUCLEAR FARKING MISSLE SITE and do $14,000 worth of damage?

2006-09-15 03:02:44 PM
Minuteman III's rawk!!!! The Mark 12A re-entry vehicles are the shiznit!!!111!!LOL!!

/clowns have no sense of humor

2006-09-15 03:04:07 PM
they didn't actually do $14,000 of damage. And let's get this straight, if you protest a WMD, you get 10 years in prison, nice.

2006-09-15 03:06:37 PM
While nuclear silos are designed to withstand medium sized warhead impacts within a close proximity, NOTHING can be hardened against Catholics in clown suits!

Break into site != break into silo.
Break into site = climb or cut open chain link / barbed wire fence.

$14,000 damage = someone's getting paid a *lot* to do some pressure washing and fence repair. Perhaps they screwed up an antenna. Remember, air force hammers and toilet seats cost a lot, too.

They just broke into the paremater ... They didn't actually get inside the silo ....

2006-09-15 03:12:01 PM
lock them up and give them 10 years to think about what asshats they are.

2006-09-15 03:13:12 PM
$14,000-- Probably the government's gouging them on shipping and handling. They should leave negative feedback.

2006-09-15 03:14:21 PM
What Killians45 said. I would have loved for them to try and open the LF. BAHAHAHAHA Dumbasses. That's like the anti-nuke people that got into Griffis AFB back in the early 90's. They were banging on the external fuel pods of the B52's. They thought they were banging on the nukes and destroying them. DUMMIES!!

/ex AF Cop
//guarded nukes
///guarded a lot more than 12 at a time...A LOT more.

Yeah cause breaking and entering and destroying property is the absolute only way to protest something.

Interesting link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:US_nuclear_warheads_1945-2002_graph.png

Apparently, we somehow managed to get rid of a lot of nukes from '91 to '94 without any clown suits being involved.

2006-09-15 03:21:43 PM
So, tell me if I got this right.

Three men got access to a highly secure area with in commission missiles (presumably with nuclear warheads).

How many other countries security worse than this? I am guessing none.

And we are worried that terrorists might get missiles and nukes from ruskie land.

//before someone jumps and says site!=silo
// the site must be pretty secure as well should it not be
//how tough would it be to get RDX into that site if the //men got in

Nope. If they'd have actually gotten in the silo to do that damage, then I'd worried. Damn hippies need to sit in jail and think about why their protest has failed.

Dumb thing to do, but I don't think they were trying to do any actual damage to our nuke program, just make a point.

And isn't 10 years in prison pretty damn harsh for this? Damn, give them probation and let them go, they are just old hippies.

FallingKnife: $14,000-- Probably the government's gouging them on shipping and handling. They should leave negative feedback.

Who ever figured out the cost for that probably used to write EPRs.

NCO: "Airman John Doe replaced a battery saving the Air Force 10 thousand dollars."
NCOIC: "Lets beef that up a bit. Make it 100 thousand dollars."
Airman: "What the flying fark is wrong with you people?"
