Draw the sword close enough to cut him down before he can pull out the pistol...

/ Hey, that's what I'd do.

?

Life imitates "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

I'm with the_gospel_of_thomas here. "Life imitates Fark cliches" would have been more appropriate.

I remember seeing a police training video about how if confronted with a knife, you're better off not grabbing your gun and instead taking immediate evasive action.

I think it was for the UK cops. They had demos of a guy with a fake knife charging a cop. The knife was at his throat before he could even get the snap off the holster.

Is that a Toledo-Salamanca?

I'm quite sure that expression (or some variant) pre-existed Fark.

Was that man a ninja? because in that case, he most likely won.

pshaw:

Before Fark and its rash of crazies with samurai swords, it was "bring a knife to a gunfight."

Sounds similar to that crazy guy with a sword back in the 90's.

Tried to do a YouTube search. Its that video where the guy claims he is fighting of demons. And hes decked out with the early 90's big 'ol sunglasses and a leather coat. They ended up using a fire hose and a ladder to pin em down.

It was pretty farkin awesome.

A decent swordsman might be able to get the drop on a guy with a gun, if he did it right. Then again, if I had a gun and I saw an angry guy with a sword coming at me I don't think he'd have enough time to do much.

A video saying that unarmed knife defense is a myth. Take it with a grain of salt. But then again swords are as easy to conceal.

A sword is very useful Vs. someone with a gun in certain situations. I mean sure, at medium to long range in the open you are screwed. But in a one on one situation someone with a sword can kill someone with a gun before they have time to draw and aim. Now if there are two people with guns it can be a differenty story or if it's one person that has already drawn their gun or has a rifle.

On most battlefields a sword has no real use these days. In a close quarters situation it is an entirely different story.

I REALLY doubt that was for UK cops, since they dont carry guns.....

You know how these things usually go, all posturing and shouting and trying to intimidate the other guy. So they both go to their cars to get out their trump cards, and the guy with the gun sees the guy with the sword coming at him and has an Indiana Jones moment.

They probably both intended to wave their weapon around and make the other guy cry and grovel.

And that is exactly why they do not. All the criminals in the UK carry knives and the bloody pistol is useless!

/good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun.

Of course you meant, "usually don't carry guns."
Point is, they do get gun training.

Because "There Can Be Only One" is just too damn long to be a Fark tag.

**TCBOO** ? Yes? No? It's not like this doesn't come up every week or two.

2006-09-13 03:36:03 AM
well, in this case, seeing as how it was described that the guy with the sword drew first,
should the headline be "man brings gun to swordfight?"

this is *exactly* why we need sword control laws like the one they just passed in scotland just a few weeks ago:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/glasgow_and_west/4788881.stm
The sale of swords is to be banned in new measures to combat violent crime, it has emerged.
Ministers are also set to announce tighter restrictions on the sale of non-domestic knives.
The measures will form the final part of the Scottish Executive's plan to combat Scotland's knife culture.

look up defensive knife training.

knives = deadlier then a holstered gun within about 50 feet.

people can cover ground fast, knives cause nasty wounds.

never underestimate a good blade in semi-skilled hands

Action Replay Nick: I'm with the_gospel_of_thomas here.

Take a good look, folks, you may never see this again.

A person who has a knife and wants to hurt you won't even let you know that they have it until you are already stabbed. All you would be thinking is: "why doesn' tthat loser get a shirt that fits... hey why am i bleeding i thought he was just going ot punch me"

2006-09-13 07:34:27 AM
Was the swordsmen muttering something about 500 years of power?

FTA:
""The victim pulled out that sword, and then the guy in the white shirt whipped out the revolver and shot him," witness Erin Hurst said."

Can someone explain to me how this person is "The victim"? Thar dumbass pulled a sword on someone and got plugged for it. The "victim" was the guy who rightfully defended himself unless we didn't get the strait dope.

The video was probably "Surving Edged Weapons" by Caliber Press.

I dunno about that. I think my dad told me once that a cop is supposed to draw and fire within a second. With an exceptional runner that gives a range of about 34 feet. However, an exceptional draw gives a range of about 7 feet. There's a bunch of variance though...

Gun is a dirty weapon, used by peasants and gaijin barbarians.

The swordsman died a true samarai warrior..... what? The sword was made in China? MAY HE BURN IN HELL FOR ETERNITY!

Shooting somebody doesn't mean you have stopped them.

What good does it to put five rounds into the thoractic cavity if the assailant proceeds on to carve you to ribbons? Just because you have shot him doesn't mean the brain isn't still perfused with oxygenated blood and you aren't going to get cut.

The goal is to get you through the incident alive and unhurt, not just kill the bad guy.

Highlander was a documentary, and the events happened in real time.

"Shooting somebody doesn't mean you have stopped them. "

Absolutely, people should shoot for the hands. Obviously disarming a charging opponent is the best way to handle the situation.

Hands, head, leg. All are smaller than center mass, move more erratically, and are harder to hit in the moment. Putting 5 rounds of .45 into someones chest will usually stop them pretty farking cold just from the shock.

Maybe in the FPS games in your mom's basement. I really don't recommend relying on that in real life.

But what do I know? Its been over a year since I've been directly involved in a shooting. Maybe things have changed since then.
