I hate stupid people. I totally predicted that this would happen when I heard about his death.

Congratulations! Assuming you know how Irwin died without checking the facts earns you the Dumbass of the Month Award!

Steve Irwin was doing a spot for a kids' show at the time, and didn't know the stingray was buried under the sand where he was. It was a freak accident.

F42: Waitaminute... are the white rays that hide in the sand also stingrays?
'cause I've stepped on those... like... 3 times.

yes, that is the kind that killed him.

the swimming ones that don't hide have their stinger at the base of their tail and can't strike with it

"I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully"

-comforting words in these troubled times.
Bush's words may not make sense at the time. You just have to wait long enough for a context to appear to show you their wisdom.

/Will not forgive Fark for not greenlighting version of headline to that effect

Balchinian: Irwin was an asshat, who provoked a wild animal into killing him.

Are you a self important asshat or just the first self important asshat who got to see the video of his death?

Provoked? I'm sure if we ever see the video it wont show some crazy stingray, backing up and jamming his fierce barb into Steve Irwins chest.

Even knowing he'd been killed by one, he still wouldn't have wanted this, he was just that nice.

My pa was career Navy he got his foot cut by one once. Said it was about the worst pain he's ever had.

Perma-Dumbass tag for the people that have been using invoking Darwin in these Irwin threads. You will farking note in all his years of doing this he was professional enough not to get killed by any animal he handled!
Stop pwning yourselves!

/still, even with his exceptional skill we'd all worried that one day his luck would run out
//but lots of skilled people have dangerous jobs; firefighters, professional drivers, armed security, athletes to name a few. They all "Darwin" when they get hurt too?

A stingray can live just fine without its barb. It is NOT a fricking honeybee. I've caught many of them and several didn't have a barb at all. I've even caught stingrays that did not have tails at all due to shark bites (scallop shaped wounds) and the bite was old and healed. So I don't think taking the bard from a stingray is going to amount to a damn thing. I think it affects panty-wastes with too much time on their hands more than it does the stingrays.

By the way enrico1982:

Yes, scallops come from scallops.

And FAKE scallops come from stingrays. FAKE is a word that means "made up" or "not real".

Get your hands on some fetal brain tissue and grow another neuron, damn.

Granted a stingray can survive without its sting (it can still hide, after all, which is its first and foremost defense mechanism). However, I stand by my previous statement that it's asshat-ish to mutilate an animal just to keep a few waders (who could avoid any trouble with said animal by walking a different way) from getting a painful but generally non-fatal sting.

this is awful. I went swimming with stingrays in the cayman islands. they're like cats- curious and friendly. they know you're coming to feed them so they rub up against you and let you hold them. retarded people make me angry...

Good one, Oznog! Your headline should probably have been greenlit.

And should have had the ironic tag.

Oseary Drakoulias: You must swear, legally swear, that you will not kill that shark, or whatever it is, if it exists.

Steve Zissou: I'll fight it, but I'll let it live. What about my dynamite?

If you cut the barbs off the little one's, they grow back. of course you have left them defenseless.

I laughed when I read the headline. Now I can have an excuess to kill stingrays.

/needs to find a large salt water body of water.

2006-09-12 05:46:17 PM
Only valid if they do it by sticking their thumbs up the stingray's butthole.

What do the Mormons have against stingrays?

2006-09-12 07:47:46 PM
So the USofA doesn't have all the morans in the world.

It sucks Steve Irwin died, but stingrays rock, they're beautiful and if I ever get a chance I'll definitely take one of those tours to swim with them. I'm sure Steve would've still liked them if it'd been a friend who got hit instead of him; he didn't blame the animals those times he got bit and he didn't kill crocs or snakes when they'd killed people either. I hope they find the morans who're doing this and get them for animal abuse or something.

2006-09-13 05:54:08 AM
what's with all these "moran" posts ??

You definitely should, it's a lot of fun and they're really very friendly and docile creatures (although that might be because they'd become domesticated from the tour I went on feeding them for years). What happened to Steve Irwin was a freak accident, end of story. Stingrays are not that dangerous.

Yep "scallops" are made from stingrays. Real scallops these days are usually about the size of your thumb and kind of oval. Fake scallops, the kind that come in most frozen food dishes that says "scallops", are usually perfectly round, about the size of a half-dollar (remember those?)and either breaded or covered in some white slimy sauce. They're round with flat top and bottom 'cos they've been punched out of stingray wings. Very few of us have ever had real scallops.
Fish processing plants went through a long battle with the USDA (I think) about 20 years ago to allow processed stingray meat to be sold as "scallops". Their argument was that it as the shape of the food that counted more than the actual provenance.
