British, the sheer amount of Optimus Prime profiles indicates that no, you do not have to use your real name.

Facebook was good when it was a paperbook given to all students at the school, it was great when it went online, and awsome when it opened up to other schools students often did research with/at. Now it pretty useless for what it was first made.

bugger, I liked facebook cause it didnt have fake webcam whores and jailbait, and it made buying drugs so much easier...

ah well.. there is always the cell phone

Given the number of unsolicited IMs I get from those jerks, I hope they do go to hell in a hurry.

who gives a fark? myspace and facebook are welcomed distractions from work, but nothing more... pretty similar to the welcomed distraction of fark!

2006-09-12 10:43:52 AM
well it was fun while it lasted. think it might be time to close out my facebook account. liked it when it was more communal. now its just turning into a less ugly myspace. cue in the homepage color features and crappy song playback on homepage in 3...2...1....

2006-09-12 10:43:57 AM
Maybe someone should just engineer another exclusive myspace/friendster/facebook site. They're rediculously easy to write, particularly myspace. What would be a better criteria than school? Income?

Meh, just get a friend to invite you. It is sort of like gmail is. Friend sent me invite and now I can invite anyone. I also like it because it doesn't contain the crappiness and slow-page loading of Myspace.

Currently using Facebook to find some Auburn/LSU tickets. Anyone out there selling for under $100?

Save your money. You'll be glad you weren't there. wdc.

I heard that facebook was sponsored by the CIA....like seriously someone told me that. Also, a message to all you farkers. You best not be creepin' around on my facebook profile...

That you were in college? Yeah.

We need a FarkBook . Only members of 1 year can have a profile.

I know we sort of have this with our profiles, but it is lacking.

/There's my idea, where's yours?

2006-09-12 11:11:00 AM
Although I hate to admit it, facebook and MySpace can be quite useful if you are a musician. It beats the hell out of postering and mass e-mailing and has proven really effective (at least for us) in getting people off their asses and into a show.

LoonieCobber Given the number of unsolicited IMs I get from those jerks, I hope they do go to hell in a hurry.

You do know that you can avoid this by changing the security of your profile, don't ya?

2006-09-12 11:22:19 AM
I have an awesome idea. We should have this thing called FarkBook where Farkers who have been members for at least 1 year are the only ones who can have a profile. My idea is the bomb!

/never can find the naked girls on Facebook.

Vide Supra....

Did you really want to be "Vide Infra" and found out that the name was already taken? Or, are you simply confused as to the term's meaning?

2006-09-12 11:24:48 AM
Well, this puts an end to "OMG You have to see this awesome Facebook thing I did, but OH NOES YOU CAN'T SEE IT, Oh well. Maybe you could sign up for classes at such and such? Then you can see my stupid picture."

Not kidding. An aquaintance of mine offered that as a solution...

2006-09-12 11:24:58 AM
It's so funny to see my students rail against stalkerfeed. They'd be horrified to know the only reason I joined FB/Myspace in the first place was to get the scoop on them before walking into the first class.

/ratemyprofessor.com evens it all out

dgarg: We need a FarkBook . Only members of 1 year can have a profile.

But then you'd miss out on all the noob attention whore Farkettes who are still testing out the power of their boobies.

2006-09-12 11:27:23 AM
I think we should start a site called farkbook, and no newbies allowed. Like, if you haven't been here for a year, you shouldn't get a profile!!!

/My idea is the bomb!!!

Hehe, I love the, "You learn our names just from us turning in our test?" questions that I get.

Also when you throw something random into a lecture that you got from a profile but is ambiguous enough that they can't be SURE. Oh I love it.

Also, I think we need a FarkBook...

I'm gonna make a new social networking site that will be divided by a combination of what car you drive and how much you make. The lower class people wont be able to contact the upper class unless they have been first asked to do so. It'll rawk!

2006-09-12 11:32:32 AM
Hm. The article conveniently neglects the part where the head coder from Facebook is currently in court battles for having left another site of identical purpose (connectu) and taken all of their code to form facebook. Funny how things like that get lost in the shuffle.

2006-09-12 11:36:33 AM
Speaking of .edu requirements (sort of), does anyone else remember how pissed off everybody got when the first internet advertisement went out? I think it was over Usenet. Everyone expected the hammer to fall because the Internet was not to be used for commercial purposes. Those were the days!

/man, am I old!

Yeah, I remember. Usenet was self policing back in the day when everyone on it was computer savvy. Being an idiot had consequences (someone finds out your IP and reports you to your sysadmin who was responsible for actually doing something about complaints, at least where I was).

As an experiment I tried contacting admins of about a dozen domains that had PC's trying to hack into our database. Not one reply. These were corporate and educational domains too.

Oh that's the best!!! I have between 50-75 students every semester, and I tell them I'll have a name to a face by the end of the second week, no later. They look at me like I'm crazy, but they don't know that I'm quizzing myself every night on their FB pictures.

And of course, mentioning something obscure is almost as much fun as smirking when they come in, exhausted, complaining they were up ALL NIGHT working on their essays. But I've already seen the drunken party pictures they posted from earlier in the week.

/and they think I'm cruel and heartless for having no sympathy
//they're right

Never heard of facebook. Seriously. I do have a myspace account though.

Don't worry everybody. I'm sure by next year there will be a new site that you can say in 5 years that you belonged to from the beginning.
